  1. So now there is no problem luring free agents . . . I thought it was that "sometimes you just can't give your money away"? I am confused. I knew it! Ryan bringing back Gardy is a matter of guilt. Ryan managed to keep his job so he feels guilty with what he left Gardenhire to deal with. So everyone gets to come back and no one is held accountable.
  2. 2 and $35 is much better for the Twins FA signing hopes than 4 years and $64 million!!!
  3. Somebody should probably compile a list of the mlbtr predictions for starting pitching FAs. I don't think they have done one for Lincecum or Hughes yet, however. I know they have done one for Jimenez, Feldman, Kazmir, Hernandez (Carmona), Arroyo, and a few others.
  4. 4 years and $64 million? Whoa. I was not expecting that estimate. He would be a fool to pass that lavish contract up. I had been thinking 2 and $28 million.
  5. I have no problem with him there on your list. He's interesting to watch. But general excitement and calling your placement "low" is pushing it quite a bit. Maybe it will become more clear once people see the 45.
  6. Aaron Slegers struck out 59 batters and gave up 108 hits in his 106 innings at IU in 2013. Judging off of a tiny amount of innings in E-Town is not a good idea. It has burned many a prospect before. The Big Ten was terrible last year other than IU, so his college ERA is wildly low.
  7. I will bet that the Twins sign Phil Hughes and re-sign Mike Pelfrey. They should make Hughes the second signing and never consider Mike Pelfrey. Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez, to me, are realistic targets at the very top of what the Twins would ever spend. Nolasco, Hughes, Linecum, and so forth, are in the "The Twins will go after one of these guys and if they get him will make the claim that they went out and spent big money."
  8. Well, that was ambitious . . . As soon as the Offseason GM Handbook comes out, people will be posting "offseason blueprints" left and right here. I recommend that you organize this with more detail and post again about it about two weeks!
  9. Yeah that was an instant classic.
  10. Are you talking about Victorino? Victorino is one of the most respected players in baseball.
  11. Haha! I agree completely, of course. If you like Why We Fight, then you should see The House I Live In (also directed by Eugene Jarecki).
  12. The problem is that Haren has now been fairly bad for two years in a row, and--other than a solid enough year this year--Nolasco has never been good outside of 2008. I guess that "problem" could end up being a good thing it drives down value. Subtract one year and some millions and then it becomes more of a worthy gamble. Nolasco would amount to a Correia+ and Haren . . . is a mystery, but he isn't so old to never regain "an average Haren season," which is still good. Haren at 2 years/$24 million and Nolasco at 3 years/$30 million.
  13. I still don't understand much of the attitude towards Hicks around here. There is basically nothing out of the ordinary after April. He skipped a level after not doing well initially each year after normal promotions. I still have never gotten an answer about the number of players in recent memory who have skipped AAA and then started the year as the leadoff man for their team. How many players have done that? Is Hicks the only one?
  14. John Sickels in the house! That was pretty illuminating in many ways. I really like the comments about Thorpe. With regard to Walker and Harrison . . . Harrison certainly the capacity to develop into a pretty good OBP guy. Walker is lacking there, though the slugging makes up for a lot of that. I still don't really understand why the Twins didn't push Walker to get a month or so at Fort Myers, though. That might have given us a somewhat clearer picture.
  15. 2-for-5 tonight. Eddie is definitely doing well so far.
  16. All sorts of lewd jokes about being "close" can ensue here. Seems weird to not have the g somehow in that word . . .
  17. It's actually a combination of that (haha!) and that is roughly where he is from, I believe. It also is just a team that makes sense.
  18. Yes. But he will be a Seattle Mariner.
  19. Called it, unfortunately.
  20. This thread has already been very worth it, for many reasons. One, it HAS brought out "lurkers and rookies" to say interesting things (and they should stick with it!) Two, it serves as a nice mini-reset button for some petty disagreements
  21. Pelfrey for multiple years is completely ridiculous. And Pelfrey for one year . . . is actually more ridiculous. If the Twins sign FAs to one year deals, then the same damn thing is going to be asked next year going into 2015. This is the time to invest in 3 or 4 years of pitching. This is THE DAMN TIME TO DO SO. Even the owner is willing to do that! Pelfrey is worth 0.0 WAR next year. And that might be nice. The Twins can easily get that from a guy making 500k. So save that 5 or so million bucks, take the 5.5 million bucks from the end of Nick Blackburn, splurge another 5 million or so and you get Ervin Santana or Ubaldo Jimenez per year. Or you get Hughes and Feldman or something. Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp? The Twins, hopefully, will learn from the Gibson nonsense of 2013 and not do the same to Meyer. Gibson should have been given 100 innings of MLB time in 2013, but they failed to figure out a way to do so. Same for Meyer this year. May can be up midseason and would be an instant improvement over everyone in 2013 other than Correia and Deduno. If I were in charge--and had balls--I would declare Kyle Gibson the opening day starter and let it fly.
  22. That's exactly right and that why I: A: Go deep with prospect lists, because of the volatility and fast-rising or fast-falling nature of some guys, and B: Why I am maybe more persistent than many others about trading aging veterans for lower-ranked prospects in other orgs.
  23. Kepler will be hopefully finishing up AA in 2015. So there is time to figure out Mauer and first base.
  24. a. With which he struck out how many? b. Yeah, and he was terrible early. Terrible. And the second season lag after that many innings is about to hit. c. Fair enough.
