  1. Nice post jokin. Some interesting data points and trends. If it were just about the bat, I'd guess he'd be up in a week or two. But with Plouffe providing quality defense and quality offense (although certainly not Sano's potential offense) and Sano's defense still a work in progress, and lacking any other obvious defensive position, I'd say Sept. 1, as DH backup 3B.
  2. Kiley McDaniel too. Interesting, all the mocks are pointing to Tate or Jay, but Kiley says (and I think Jeremy would agree) that Tucker and Bregman are still in the mix (although Bregman much less likely to fall). I'd take any of them over Cameron.
  3. My Board (based completely off things others have written and snippets of video, not any actual scouting): (1) Swanson (2) Rodgers (3) Bregman (4) Tate (5) Tucker (6) Jay
  4. Bob, agreed, but Clark also wouldn't ask for over-slot money, and I've read accounts that he has superb makeup and was the clubhouse leader on Team USA (something I could see the Twins taking into account). Jeremy, do you think Clark would be willing to go $500 k to $1 million under slot? I'd clearly prefer Tucker (or Tate or Jay) but if the three SS and Tucker are off the board, and the Twins are not sold on Tate and/or Jay, I'd honestly prefer Clark under-slot to Cameron over-slot. I'm probably in the minority there, but when I read about the players and their tools, I don't see why Cameron is worth the extra $1.5-$2 million that could be spent on higher upside picks at 73 and 80.
  5. Woooh. Is this an attempt to gain leverage over Cameron, serious interest, or just due diligence? I mean, on paper Clark sounds similar to Cameron. I actually always wondered why Cameron was thought higher of, when Clark's speed and hit tool were ranked as high or higher by some.
  6. Really hope we get Tate, Tucker, Bregman, or Jay (assuming we won't get Swanson or Rodgers for sure). Don't prefer Cameron or Allard.
  7. I have the same temptation to avoid Cameron because of how Gordon has played so far this year, but I think that it is a mistake both because (1) Gordon isn't really playing that bad for a 19-year old shortstop with (from all reports) advanced defense (his isolated discipline is actually pretty good -- the power will come with maturity), and (2) Cameron isn't Gordon, despite the similar narrative. That being said, from what I've read, I would choose Bregman (unlikely to be available) Jay, Tate, or Tucker before Cameron, even if signability were not a problem for Cameron. But if those guys are all gone, I'd be happy with Cameron.
  8. Yup. Right there. Exactly. As for Mauer, I wonder if it makes sense at some point, possibly sooner rather than later, for him to stop trying to pull the ball so much. It was certainly worth a shot, but right now the difference between Mauer as a .675 OPS hitter and a .750 OPS hitter is a big one that could really help this team.
  9. Just realized Trevor May's FIP is 2.80 and WAR according to Fangraphs is 1.6. Wowzers. Yes please.
  10. Just realized Trevor May's FIP according to Baseball Reference is 2.80. Wow. Yes please. Although xFIP is 3.54 according to Fangraphs. Not as amazing, but still decent.
  11. I probably agree with you about the 2016 starting and backup outfield (Buxton/Arcia/Hicks), with Rosario as 4th, although I wonder if Hicks shouldn't end up being the 4th outfielder. Hicks has superior on base skills to Rosario, but with Rosario's higher average it might not be a much higher on base rate for Hicks, and Rosario probably has the edge at Power. Plus unlike Hicks, Rosario hasn't had large splits. If things continue the way they are going now for Hicks and Rosario, or even if Hicks picks things up a little bit, I'd start Rosario and have Hicks sub in for Arcia against lefties, when Buxton needs a day off in center, or late in games when the Twins are ahead by a few runs. I also think that Kepler, Walker and Harrison will all be possible options by mid-season next year, if not earlier. Given that, I'm skeptical that it will make sense to keep Arcia as an outfielder for much longer. If his hitting improves above what it was in 2014 for the rest of this year and early next year, I would consider him as a DH (competing with Vargas for that spot). But I just don't think it makes sense to have an outfielder with Arcia's (lack of) defensive ability in 2015, at a field with as much space as Target Field. If he won't cut it at DH for us (i.e., it becomes Vargas or even Plouffe/Sano is a better option) then I would trade him sometime next year.
  12. Agreed Nick. The Twins shouldn't (and I don't think Terry Ryan will) even slightly mortgage their future at the trade deadline. If they are trading a future piece that is not ready for another future piece that is or is almost ready, and the values are close, then fine. But we shouldn't be trading a top-10 prospect for one or even two years of some aging veteran that will very marginally increase our odds of success down the stretch or in the playoffs.
  13. I just came to Twins Daily and there were three diaries about negativity on the right-hand side of the front page. Apparently we, as a community, would much rather be discussing so-called negativity than discussing EITHER (1) the Twins' great start and why they have been able to do that, OR (2) how the Twins have a lot they could improve on and how they could do that. I realize me commenting here keeps one of those three diaries on the front page, but I think the absurdity (imo) of this trend is worth pointing out.

  16. I hope that this article is targeted at people who are cynical/defeatist/crabby/crybabies/unconstructively negative (I know they exist on these pages) and not at people who have well-considered constructive criticisms of the Twins. The latter group simply don't just want to feel good about their team on June 1st (which I do), but also on November 1st. But I must say it is a little rude to associate constructive criticism (or negativity or whatever you want to call it) with selfishness or ego. It really isn't about myself. I am over myself. I want the Twins to win in June AND October, and I want them to be winning at those times next year and the year after. I'm not making constructive criticisms because I want to emote all over this page and bring everyone down. I want to win, just in the medium-run and long-run too. If that makes me critical or negative, then so be it.
  17. As drjim's video link demonstrates, Sano hit another bomb last night, number 10 on the year. He is looking great. Overall, his numbers are .250/.354/.506 (.860) with a 13.3% BB rate and a 24.6% K rate. That K rate is a bit high, but if you look at his 2011, 2012, and 2013 seasons, it is actually a lower K rate than any of them (26.3%, 26.0%, and 27.4%, respectively). So that is really good to see. And of course his BB rate is higher than it has been in previous seasons, with the exception of 2012. The only concerns remaining are that Sano's BABIP and ISO are a little low compared to previous years, but that may be just the rust in April, which has since mostly worn off. Since May 1, Sano is batting .307/.387/.584 (.971). Also, pretty small sample size, but Sano is absolutely obliterating left-handed pitching, with a .333/.448/.917 (1.365). Just a thought, my understanding is that Kennys Vargas, although a switch hitter, generally has better splits against righties. Thus, I like to imagine a September/playoffs situation where Vargas or Arcia platoon with Sano at DH. Man that would be fun.
  18. My board would go: 1. D. Swanson 2. T. Jay 3. B. Rodgers 4. D. Tate 5. A. Bregman 6. K. Tucker I voted for Tate though, because he is the first on my board likely to be available.
  19. Funny (I LOL'd), but still annoying.
  20. Agreed on Plawecki, or another target is Susac. I'm not against the idea of trading for a catching prospect, and I do think it is (relatively speaking) an organizational weakness, I just think Plawecki and Susac make sense because their teams have alternatives that are as good or better. Interesting question is what the Giants or Mets would want. Giants could use a 3rd Baseman, but I don't want to trade Plouffe or Sano straight up for Susac (although last year I would have traded Plouffe straight up). We would need something more. The Mets could use a shortstop, so huge bummer there about Santana's (and to a lesser extent) Escobar's play. Anyone know what other positions the Giants or Mets could be looking for upgrades at?
  21. Why would Boston trade Swihart? It's not like they have a strong backup or another good catcher in the prospect pipeline? The only reason they would trade him to us is if we ridiculously overpaid, which we wouldn't do.
  22. It is criminally negligent to have Vargas obliterating AAA pitching and at the same time Nunez and Escobar batting DH. As a commenter above noted, they have gotten away with it, but that is no good reason to keep it up. Send down Santana, move Escobar to SS full time and call up Vargas to play DH.
  23. I appreciate the sentiment but I think Santana should go to Rochester, Escobar should be the everyday SS and Polanco should move to Rochester in a few weeks when Santana is ready to head back to the majors, whether as starter or backup/utility.
