  1. This is a good point. Everyone seems to assume going over next year won't matter because there will be a draft or new system, but as far as I know, there is nothing that keeps MLB from carrying over penalties, even if they need to take a new, equally or more severe form. But maybe someone who knows more about the CBA process could say more. Jeremy???
  2. Well Ramos for Capps obviously not. Span for Meyer, jury is still out, but probably not.
  3. Cripple, no. But taking reps in games is not the same as taking them in practice. And especially for a lot of young players, defense is about learning to focus every moment of every game. And that means that it isn't just those 2-3 chances where you are improving, but all the others where the ball never comes your way, where you are learning to be fully ready despite the large probability you won't be involved in the play.
  4. Bull ****. Translation, Sano is ready, but Plouffe is playing well at third base and given the uncertainty about whether the Twins will remain in the playoff hunt this September, I'm keeping things in a holding pattern for now. I actually don't disagree with Ryan's strategy, I just wish he'd be more honest about it. I think we want Sano playing third base every day, and I don't think he'll do that until Plouffe is gone, and that isn't going to happen while there is still a decent chance of the Twins making the playoffs. I know that isn't the popular opinion (either because people want Sano up playing DH right now at the cost of his defensive development at 3B or, on the other extreme, they want Plouffe traded right now). But frankly, I think the holding pattern is the best way to go, at least until the Twins either collapse, or Sept. comes and they are still in contention, in which case Sano is not going to be playing 3B otherwise anyway, and you may as well make him your DH to finish out the year.
  5. Baseball Prospectus take on Javier: 6. Wander Javier, SS, Dominican Republic Javier might be the most “controversial” prospect eligible to sign July 2nd, with more than one scout I spoke with believing he was the best all-around player in the class, and a few believing he didn’t belong in the top 10. At the plate, Javier has plus bat speed and when he makes contact the ball explodes off of the bat, but there are serious balance issues here, and the length of his swing adds a good deal of swing-and-miss. He’s also less likely to stick at shortstop than Fox, though he does have a chance to stay there thanks to a strong throwing arm and above-average athleticism. There’s a lot of risk here, but there’s also a chance for three 60 tools when everything is said and done.
  6. Yeah, exactly, maybe Kiley meant they would not be going over their allotment, whatever that is after trading for a higher allotment. . .
  7. Also Rogers as a LOOGY. He's been unhittable by lefties.
  8. No no no no no no no No No NO no NO nooooo no no NONONONON no NOOOO NNNNNO NO! Edit: (No!)
  9. Wow, in addition to going 3 for 3 with 2 walks, check out Kepler's awesome game-ending (and game-saving) catch to win it last night (video at the bottom): http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20150629&content_id=133536112&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_l111&sid=l111 But by all means, tell me again about how he's our First Baseman of the future. . .
  10. Wohh, Kepler's game ending catch. Watch that video at the bottom. Yes, he can play great outfield defense. But tell me again how we should be grooming him for First Base . . .
  11. Another glowing review of Gordon, especially relative to the hitting performance: https://baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26781 Again, power is the limiting factor, but the hit tool is praised, the speed good, and best of all, this: "He has a strong arm and solid fundamentals defensively that profile as plus at shortstop, and there is no question he can stick there in the future." You don't hear those words very often.
  12. It actually isn't. Max Scherzer, currently the best pitcher in baseball, allows .57 HR every 9 innings. Here are some more: Chris Sale: .66 Chris Archer: .74 Corey Kluber: .73 Sonny Gray: .42 Clayton Kershaw: .93 David Price: .65 Jose Berrios in AA this year: .60 That's actually a very good number.
  13. Yeah, hitting-wise maybe, but Kepler is much bigger and probably more athletic than even pre-injury Kubel.
  14. At least put May in the bullpen (if you must pull him -- I would pull Milone). Send down Thompson. I don't mind having just one lefty.
  15. ZOMG, Sano, Kepler, Walker. Also, Berrios with the great start and Polanco broke out of his slump with a great evening at the plate as well. What an evening for the Chattanooga prospects.
  16. After going 3 for 5 with a double and home run tonight, Sano is now batting .273//370/.546 (.916) on the year. Since June 1st he is batting .329//.422/.671 (1.093). Also, still only 3 errors in June.
  17. Completely agree. My heart says play for 2015, but my head says play for 2016. I'm going with my head.
  18. La la la, I can't hear you. Don't want to think about this.
  19. Surprisingly glowing review of Nick Gordon. I mean, I am still higher on him than most around these parts, and I was still astonished. Short take away: He needs to improve pitch recognition, level his swing a little bit (he hits into the ground too much), and grow into his frame (hopefully bringing more power). The first will come with experience, the second with coaching, and the third (hopefully) with time. Otherwise his swing and approach at the plate are great, his defense is excellent (they are pretty sure he stays at SS), his speed above average and his arm plus. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/6/26/8841633/twins-prospect-nick-gordon-scouting-report-and-projection
  20. Do you have a link for this? I believe you, just want to see the source.
  21. As the person in charge of Sano's adopt-a-prospect thread, and in light of his name in the title of this post, I thought I would take this opportunity to leave this here: On the year, Sano is now batting .248/.348/.500 (.848). That's pretty good after coming back from a year off with a serious injury. Perhaps the best news, however, is that Sano only has 1 error in his last 10 games and only 2 errors in June. June isn't over yet, but it still seems to be quite a bit of an improvement over May when he had 8 errors, and April, when he had 4 errors in 2/3 of a month.
  22. After hitting his 14th HR of the year last night, Sano is now .248/.348/.500 (.848) on the year. Perhaps the best news is that Sano only has 1 error in his last 10 games and only 2 in June. June isn't over yet, but it seems to be a bit of an improvement on May when he had 8 errors and April, when he had 4 in two thirds of a month.
  23. Anyway, to continue a "locked" conversation about relief pitching I began somewhere else with jokin and spiritofvodkadave, about Taylor Rogers, who is also being discussed here as a replacement to Duensing or Thompson: like Meyer, nothing says you can't use Rogers (or trade him) as a starter later on if it comes to that. But right now his ability to get lefties out makes him a huge asset. The Royals three best hitters are all lefties. Just saying.
  24. Also, that Tonkin/Meyer thread is now locked and won't let me respond. Bummer.
  25. Yeah. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/lefties-cant-touch-taylor-rogers/
