  1. Or scouting, or physical ability, or lots of things.....most of the online publications have guys and gals that see the people in person, and they don't just rely on stats. They also talk to scouts from every organization over and over. I'd guess that there is some bias for original thoughts, but it disappears over time. After all, a month or two of data shouldn't change your opinion on someone, if that opinion is based on several years of data, unless there is a clear process change.
  2. If there were no other options, was it really brilliant strategy, or just what was available? I think they did a lot right last off season, it just didn't work. But I also think they did little to nothing to fix the medium term, either by signing longer term FAs or trading for player(s). But, if there are no real options for long term deals, is it really genius to not do what you can't do? That was the point of the post.......maybe they signed a bunch of ST deals because there wasn't another option, not because that's what they wanted to do. I hope they are dealing from this super deep farm system for 1 MLB player with 3+ years of control this off season. No idea who, but a C, 3B, OF, 1B or SP would be nice. If not, it looks like another year of 1 year deals and hoping someone from the farm steps up.
  3. A QO will be worth 19MM by then.....at that point, depending on how things look, you maybe just take that 1 year deal. If he's this good next year, he'll get a deal, even as a 32 yo. Most athletes bet on themselves at this point, not all, but most. I think 4/80 gets it done. I don't think 3 years (as that's only a 2 year extension) gets is done, but it might. Kind of depends how long he wants to play.
  4. There isn't a national publication that even has them close, is there? I mean, FG has Arraez 31st on their list. I doubt that is some kind of bias.....
  5. I have no idea why everyone is so sure Romero is going to be really good, he's not even in the majors right now........ I see no shot Gibson signs for a low deal, this is his last shot to make big money. You either have to give him years, or big money, or both, imo, to get him to sign.
  6. It also glosses over that they went low risk, low reward, by not signing the best FAs (though they certainly tried to sign Darvish).
  7. Wow. Unexpected. Not sure how I feel about the return. Make McGill the closer please. Keep May for high leverage. Or maybe move Reed to closer?
  8. I'm not sure how anyone can reach that conclusion based on the past 12 months. I'd love to hear your rationale.
  9. No, but why not sign your 2nd or 3rd best too? And, welcome to the site!
  10. It's kind of hard to overuse a hitter, compared to a pitcher. They are two different animals. Most hitters don't need time off, if they do, that handicaps the teams. Pitchers? totally different, they need time off.
  11. I find it fascinating that so many would never draft a pitcher in round 1, because of injury concerns, but would commit 6-8 years on a contract to one. It seems like a disconnect. Of course, I don't agree on not drafting one early, so I'm probably more inclined to take the risk. I think it's also harder to sign Berrios than the two CLE pitchers because he already got a good bonus, not a great bonus, but a good one. Elite players are signing less and less contracts, if they are the kind that got paid at signing, because they see what happened to some of their peers. Me? I flip flop on signing Berrios to a deal, and only because of injuries. That said, I'd offer him 6-8 years, and see what happens. There is real value in certainty (or as close as baseball can come), and he's a legit very good to great pitcher. Gibson? Hmmmm......I'd offer a 4 year deal, meaning a 3 year extension. I don't think it happens, though. If I'm him, I want to be a FA in a year, unless the TWins really go big.
  12. He probably will, but from what I've read, teh quality of the pitching there has dropped the last couple years, as teams worry about injury. But, we'll see.... I agree with everyone, he should be in AAA now.
  13. Big believer in Garver. I hope he plays some 1B this year.......when not catching.
  14. QQ: What if Buxton doesn't hit again next year.....do you move Lewis to CF? does that answer change if Gordon turns it on next year, and Buxton isn't hitting?
  15. heh, well played.....but apparently those hundreds of innings are meaningless, or 4 other teams were really wrong earlier this year....or, um, something. but well played.
  16. any idea why 31 yo old new guy, cut by 4 teams already this year, didn't pitch last night instead of Garver? Buehler? Anyone?
  17. I too am guessing 2020 for both Lewis and Kiriloff......no surprise, but I'd move them both to AA right now. Challenge them and see what happens. It might be good for both to struggle for the firs time..... If they aren't in AA this year, I guess both start in FTM next year, since the weather is better than any other option in the system. This makes it more likely they play full time the first month. Then they move to AA in May/June, and AAA at the end of the year.
  18. eat more dessert, I hear it is good for you* *not actually true, mostly, but sort of, if you consider being happy good....as long as you are really happy. ** **practicing to be a lawyer someday. Or not. Probably not. But just in case.
  19. Fair....what signs do you see on the current roster that they are looking to 2019? I'm open to a different thought than I have, but I just don't see much of a youth movement.
