  1. I did not mean Pohlad, actually. If Jim Pohlad issued a win-or-else ultimatum to Ryan, then good. It would hurt to see Ryan go, though, as he deserves credit for putting together those good teams and by all accounts he's a stand up guy. I actually do have faith that the team he is putting together can win in a couple of years. That said, many people on these boards would be curious to know more about his 180 degree reversal on free agents. I haven't seen any of our beat writers press for an answer yet, so until someone does we are left to speculate.
  2. said better than I could say it -- thanks It also sounds like Meyer is keen on working with Pelfrey and not just Pelfrey wanting to mentor, so this could turn out good.
  3. Good article on Pelfrey and also a good analogy here, IMO. I can't agree right now that the Twins are a model franchise fallen on tough times, not until they start winning again. They're basically just another team right now. Kudos to Terry Ryan who has taken full responsibility for this mess, as the other bigger names associated with the Twins don't appear willing or capable of doing that. I think giving the identity of the team over to Sano/Buxton/Meyer will be the big boost and if Pelfrey can help do that, as the article suggests, then great.
  4. jay, part of the job of the front office is to dream up scenarios…much of the Twins community has seemingly spent the last part of 2012 and entire 2013 seasons asking "How did this happen?" when in hindsight there were some pretty clear warning markers.
  5. If they contribute, that's great. I actually like Guerrier's signing the most (of the ex Twins). Here's another idea. So how would people feel if in late May or June Kubel is providing some offense, Bartlett is helping the club, Guerrier is in the pen, and then the Twins hit the skids again and drop 12 games under .500? It's hypothetical so no need to answer. It would lead to some uncomfortable PR, but even worse, it does disrupt the development of younger guys and does kind of clog the roster. I don't think that's completely a myth. I just don't know why Terry signs all of these particular guys en masse under these circumstances and opens himself to that possibility. Well, we shall cross that bridge if we come to it (and hopefully we don't).
  6. FYI I'm getting weird stuff again. The whole page goes dim except for the ad in the panel below the Facebook and Twitter connects.
  7. I can get on board with this explanation. Gardenhire shouldn't be shy about drawing on his own experience of winning, however (or Mauer for that matter).
  8. Hey is Jacque available for a minor league deal? True there's no downside for the Twins by this. And I trust Terry Ryan as a scout. But collectively, there's something a little off key about bringing back all these former Twins from the glory years. Don't people have that sense or am I imagining things? I will count Pelfrey in that group-I am happy to have him back but he was practically begging on hands and knees to come back here. Why? I can't exactly put my finger on why these ex Twin deals are starting to feel redundant or desperate or whatever, but I will back johnnyd on this! If a couple of these guys perform and help us get back to winning, I will be happy to eat my words.
  9. I loved reading this. To be brief in reply, I welcome the new detailed statistical tools, but I don't bury my head in them. I'm grateful that others do, because as you said, they can enhance our understanding, and I guess that makes me a freeloader to some degree, letting the rest of you study in detail what I am happy to know in the abstract. For example the stats tell us that Pelfrey and Hughes are fly ball pitchers with possibly high FB% (verify) and I wouldn't have known that without being on Twins Daily; and won't an outfield of Buxton & Hicks be nice then? And we are just a year away from that. So with this knowledge, I am optimistic Hughes and Pelfrey were good signings. Kudos to Ryan. But in the end, as a casual fan, BABIP doesn't tell me much more than simple batting average already tells me. There is a degree of chance, luck, funny hops and diving grabs that happen in every game that will skew any statistic in any direction.. Same with SIERA and ERA+ for pitchers. I do take heed to the advanced stats, but at the same time, basic ERA is simple, familiar, and usually tells its piece of the story accurately enough.
  10. I also think Markakis retires an Oriole but who can know for sure.
  11. This should be a good series. If you could guarantee me the Twins win it, then I hope it goes 7 games...and if it comes down to game 7, give me Morris any day. The Twins veteran lineup should get it done. Twins in 5! Atlanta has some nice prospects, but I think they're just relying too much on their young guys to get them this far. Glavine had a great year but I'd like to see him repeat it. This could be the decade of the Pittsburgh Pirates but I could definitely see Atlanta making another playoff run a few years down the road.......
  12. I agree this is a good time to get back on board. But this is not technically a rebuild season. Terry Ryan's own comments from last summer he said "the Twins are not shooting for respectability, we are shooting for the postseason" or words to that effect. I would personally be satisfied with .500 this year but the urgency to sign free agents this offseason tends to back up TR's statement over my own opinion.
  13. Very good recap. It sounded like a good time. :-) I heard Gladden try to get Mauer fired up in an interview Fri night (and mostly succeeded, of course). Even though it seems like they would eventually find a working formula year after year, events like this are ever-evolving and not easy to pull off even when you're familiar doing them. Sounds kind of weird setting up tables in the service tunnels though. By the way, great Carew story and great choice for rim shot (Buddy Mills SNL)
  14. No way does Suzuki bat leadoff, you guys
  15. Re: front loading contracts: maybe it boils down to a player not wanting to take a steep pay cut before he is forced to?
  16. I wondered about that too because that's what I thought. Because why not? But the rule is apparently restricted to the pitcher. 6.10 ( The Designated Hitter Rule provides as follows: (1) A hitter may be designated to bat for the starting pitcher and all subsequentpitchers in any game without otherwise affecting the status of the pitcher(s) inthe game. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/downloads/y2013/official_baseball_rules.pdf The DH itself is still optional in any given game; but the position DHed for must be pitcher position. Poorly written rule, to my mind. And there's no way to jigger it like having Florimon pitch to the leadoff guy and then go play short unless we wanted to do the pincher hitter in the 1st inning thing (discussed on another thread). We're stuck with Florimon's bat, like it or not. Unless we sign Drew. Hey, somebody should start a thread on that………..
  17. G-man definitely needs to be in there.. and I would swap Go-Go (little too self centered for my taste) and put in Torii. Good times..
  18. I do agree. It's a double edge sword though. I think two+ years down the road the team will look different and more offense heavy, but in two+ years looking back on a 3 year contract to Drew won't look as good, just because he was a better hitter than Florimon, and Drew might be batting 7th or 8th by then anyway, or maybe a prospect emerges or Dozier can move back or a free agent becomes available in the meantime, etc. I think we are just saying that there are going to be better options than Drew at 3/30.
  19. I can never figure out TD math when it comes to WAR so anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.. 3.1 - 2.1 = 1 So then Drew is projected -- just for 2014 mind you -- to be worth exactly one more win than Florimon? I guess if that's the win that gets you from 88-74 to 89-73 and that final wild card berth, then Drew's your guy. I personally would like to see them prove they can play .500 again, and then rearm after 2014, one step at a time. $30 mil is a lot of money even to a millionaire like Pohlad. It's the Cost/benefit Reider and others have been pointing out. And Levi and the other people pointing out how difficult it is to forecast two years down the road and longer.
  20. anything that helps win a ballgame, I'm in favor of
  21. I should have said, Michael Young could help bring back a 162-game mentality, because the Twins recently had some fun, strong playoff drives (like 2009). But the new normal is a .317 W% in September the last three years. Pro-rating to a 51-111 record which just feeds the negative sentiment, which I am occasionally guilty of. They've also made a habit of a embarking on a horrendous losing streak every April or May, followed by the trade deadline surge (are we buyers or sellers!?), and then the inevitable collapse. Terry Ryan promised that wouldn't happen anymore. So I'd rather have him sign Michael Young, who is new blood and has a reputation for playing hard and every day. Young at third and move Plouffe to the RF platoon works for me.
  22. Yes, I've noticed Young's decline in the field and he's capable of some occasionally poor at-bats. But as long as he still wants to play I'd take him over Plouffe seven games a week. Also he might bring a 162-game mentality to the clubhouse, which arguably is what the Twins have been lacking the most.
  23. The Michael Young suggestion is a fresh take which I really appreciate. I'd love Young on a year at 3B over a Cruz Drew or Morales signing.
  24. That raw emotion was a nice departure from the normal boring Peyton Manning snoozefest interviews. Sherman actually kind of put himself on the map and will now have a chance to back it up. If he performs and Seattle wins they will go down as one of the great all time Defenses and I think they can do it. Go 'hawks!
