  1. Well put. Fairly or unfairly, Escobar has been labelled. I think he can be an everyday infielder too. I bet these phone calls are from teams looking for a starting shortstop for the price of a utility infielder.
  2. I agree. This gap between cFIP and what really happened seems to point to the Twins outfield fielding. Eduardo Escobar Chris Colabello Chris Parmelee Jason Bartlett Eduardo Nunez All these guys and more were designated outfielders at some point last year; Parmelee was probably the least bad option among these. Hopefully it's all on the past. Doesn't matter anymore if it was Gardy insisting that anyone who shagged fly balls during BP was qualified or if it was Ryan trying to "ride it out" (Ryan did acquire Sam Fuld, who despite his poor arm was able to keep many balls from hitting the ground). Schafer seemed to get to balls in left that Willingham and Kubel had no chance at, this is why I would be fine letting Schafer hold a place somewhere out there, until Buxton and others get their chance. This is also why I respect Molitor's judgment to not want to use Santana as a CF even though Santana did improve as the season went along.
  3. Trueblood has some quotable moments in this article, I especially liked the anecdote he led with: "...The first Twin to swing at a first pitch that night was Pedro Florimon, the ninth batter of the game. The second to do so was Trevor Plouffe, the 15th batter, leading off the fourth inning, and Plouffe only did so because he got such a meatball from Joe Blanton; he homered on that swing..." That's an interesting idea and I wonder if by design for that one game. I can almost imagine Gardy and/or Vavra instructing everyone in the lineup to take the first pitch, in order that Florimon might have a real easy first-pitch fastball waiting for him. Reminds me of how some NFL teams would script their first 15 offensive plays before the game began. It would be interesting to know if the Twins program a series of at bats against certain pitchers that way. If the Twins have the personnel to succeed with the "take-the-first-pitch" approach then why not stick with it. Another question would be why teams are going back to a more free swinging SLG type of offense.
  4. So according to cFIP the Twins have a league average staff, or thereabouts. The Twins pitchers are also at the bottom of the league in getting strikeouts, and it's not even close. If cFIP has validity (it appears so) then what does that mean for the value of a strikeout?
  5. "When I hear a pitcher is throwing a “simulated game” my first thought is that he repeated the opposing lineup 10,000 times." -Jonathan Judge tweet
  6. and I think Mauer throws for 380 yards in that game
  7. Maybe he was acting out a joke about being winded. "I get tired of jogging around the bases after all these home runs…"
  8. I will make the opposite prediction. It's the first two weeks of spring and he's already making mental gaffes. To me that's a sign he won't have the discipline to maintain his gains and will (again) start to lose interest when things get tough. I'm sure he's a great guy but he's not going to make it in MLB (would be happy to be wrong, etc). Give Schafer the first chance to hold the CF spot instead.
  9. Very interesting. Mauer was quite a star all those years and gave people a lot of enjoyment, but there still is some dissatisfaction about that last decade. And now the past few years, we're back to chasing third place again.
  10. Meyer a sense of entitlement--haven't heard that one before. Not saying it's impossible, with his agent Boras being such a strong personality and such and Meyer being a 1st round pick. Ryan gives dozens of interviews a week so maybe just a slip of the tongue. If not, I hate to break it to him, but Meyer holds all the cards in this game. Ryan doesn't really have the choice to leave him in the minors much longer.
  11. I sense maybe a little sarcasm there...I agree that this has been more of a poor patching job than a rebuild and a rebuild woulda been better. I agree with Souhan and all the above posts in this thread and am back to not liking the E. Santana signing. Would be nice to have more than one rotation spot open, because both May and Meyer should have a claim on it.
  12. Absolutely. It starts with the player and Plouffe gets credit for wanting to be a better player. Which goes back to Sano joking about his diet. If Sano comes to the majors and for some reason doesn't take it seriously or is a distraction, Ryan is justified in sending him back to Rochester. But I hate to think the Twins are planning to invoke some long ago discredited wisdom about prospect development clocks, or that Sano will need to play a full season in the minors "to see how his elbow holds up" or something like that. It feels like other teams don't go by those old unwritten rules much anymore. Of course this is just the fan in me talking. Bring up Sano!
  13. Great link, great play. Where will Sano play? He will play third base. Nice that Molly could turn around Plouffe's defensive game. We sat through full seasons of Plouffe and Valencia playing pretty bad baseball at third. Sano couldn't be any worse than those guys were. Plouffe is a decent player now and should have some value to some teams. He should be dealt ASAP. If Sano has a nice spring then put Sano on 3B on Day 1 and if he struggles or is a little too squirrelly and you need to send him down, then send him down. This ain't rocket science. Also that might be as hard as a third baseman had ever thrown a baseball. Mauer is probably still soaking his hand in ice as we speak........
  14. Contrary to Ryan's statements, Molitor has said Santana is the shortstop and Hicks gets first shot at center. So grab the popcorn.
  15. Mobile redirects. Comes and goes in cycles. But I haven't seen any threads about expensive wristwatches in a while, so keep up the good fight.
  16. You are right. It doesn't look like Pinto knows where home plate is.
  17. If Santana is our shortstop then Escobar slides to the UTIL role, making Nunez expendable. Herrmann would seem to be a more useful 25th man in that scenario. (But not at the expense of sending Pinto to AAA)
  18. It's a bit concerning the effort we put into renewing and extending some of these guys (Pelfrey, Perkins, Suzuki, Hughes, etc) not to mention the reunion tours. Obviously that claim can be nit picked, cost control is good, Hughes is good, etc. but I do think the Twins put far too much emphasis on having "the right guys" around.
  19. Yes that is what I thought. Thanks for pointing it out (again I see). My belief was that a catcher's SB-CS stats were measured solely by whether a base runner was safe or out on a steal attempt where the pitch was delivered to home plate etc. (why would the stat be anything else?) I will take another look.
  20. Clarified-thanks. More like 2-8 then. I would assume most qualifying catchers have similar data, however. Still, Pinto's small sample of 5-11 or 45% would have put him among the leaders. Did Pinto attempt any catcher pick-offs in 2014 or did the coaches see those wild throws and tell him to stop throwing to bases? (It would be very defensible advice, in my opinion, but might play tricks with Pinto's confidence.) Not sure that "pickoff attempt" data is observed and recorded anywhere, so it's just an idle thought.
  21. Also for the sake of fairness, Pinto in 2013 threw out 5 of 11 base stealers and in 159 innings was not charged with a passed ball. What changed between 2013 and 2014 (besides adding Suzuki and Steinbach). Another good question. Correction: Steinbach also coached in 2013
  22. Are we all talking about the same thing here?? just asking...
  23. Superpowers are ok, just as long as he doesn't turn invisible.
  24. I think he meant fly--as in, LITERALLY fly.
  25. My read is that Pelfrey has been asked if he'd like to try the bullpen, and apparently he's refused. I'm not sure how that squares up with the "do whatever it takes" attitude that supposedly makes him a great guy to have around. That's just my read and obviously I don't have all the inside info. Whatever. Meyer is willing to pitch from the pen, but not Pelfrey. Really, really easy roster decision.
