  1. My two takeaways from this are that Ryan was a little more involved during the interregnum than I realized, and that the Twins, doing things the Twins Way, paid off in spades with acquiring Sano. Bravo.
  2. In the end, we find out it was not the Twins car, it was the Cubs car
  3. Today is Labor Day; in that vein, please remove your caps for the Curt Floods and Andy Messersmiths of the baseball world who challenge the reserve system and paved the way for the players union we know today. In any case, I'm doing some unrelated research on information found in some public domain newspapers, and thought it would be fun occasionally to take a detour and share some baseball writing from the turn of the century. Some of these account are both entertaining and fascinating, or, too good not to share! Here is the link to the Library of Congress project that is digitizing and making these old newspapers public. The papers are public domain. I encourage you to take a look if you are interested in history or just want to do something different on the internet sometime. One hundred years ago on this date is an account of a doubleheader played between the Marshalltown Ansons and Clinton Pilots. The teams were from Iowa towns competing in the Central Association league, an unaffiliated minor league that survived about six years. Most or all minor league teams at that time were unaffiliated with the American and National league clubs; in fact, they were often just little leagues scratched together and disbanded under the softest of pretenses. Without further ado... ANSONS CELEBRATE WITH DOUBLE WIN ________________________ CLOSE SEASON BY DEFEATING CLINTON TWICE LABOR DAY ________________________ COOPER WHITEWASHES HIS FORMER TEAMMATES ________________________ Ex-Pilot Joins Ansons For Final Games and Scores Victory in Second Contest—Starts First Game, But Is Taken Out in Third, Richardson Finishing—Ryan's Fielding Feature. ________________________ Clinton, Sept. 7.—The Ansons finished up like whirlwinds Monday, wiping up the Pilots for two. That they did so was not altogether their fault, neither was the game presented to them. Both contests were marked by more or less carelessness, due to the fact that they were the last games of the season, and as a result were uninteresting as baseball exhibitions. The first one dragged horribly, while the second was played in the remarkable time of an hour and ten minutes. Cooper, signed by Marshalltown for the last day of the season, made two efforts to humble his former teammates on their own grounds. He was unsuccessful in his first attempt, being forced to take position on the bench in the third inning. He came back strong in the second, however, and allowed only two hits up to the last inning, "goose egging" the Pilots........................ ________________________ Source: The Times-Republican (evening edition), Marshalltown, IA, Sept. 7, 1915, p. 9. 4. Looks like guys are making all the plays and Molitor pushing all the right buttons tonight. Good call on Hunter tonight. Great game! .....so far?
  5. Duffey has been really good. Ryan and the Twins got that one right. Don't remember any of us rattling the cage for Duffey like we were Berrios. May had an uncharacteristic horrible day. No reason to feel too upset about that loss yesterday.
  6. Yup, no rotating closers today because May was the only good reliever available.
  7. Holey moley. 1. Duffey was unhittable the whole game. 2. Molitor took Duffey out of the game. 3. Many people questioned this decision in real time and thought Duffey should stay in. Call it "first-guessing" or pre guessing...or just shootin the **** and enjoying a ballgame as usual? 4. May melted down, Game over. Yet somehow if you thought Duffey should stay in the game, you are dead wrong! I'm confident Molitor acted a little too knee jerk taking Duffey out. People might disagree. It looks like Molitor was falling back on the unwritten rule of not allowing the starting pitcher be charged with the go ahead run. In fact Morris said something to that effect as it was happening. Again, Duffey was nearly unhittable--one hard hit ball that inning to the previous batter before he came out. I doubt Molitor was looking at matchups at all, as he just seemed to shoot out of the dugout. Just get Duffey out of there lest he allow a third base runner and the Twins lose the lead and Duffey be charged with what the Sabermetricians call a Loss.
  8. It's from golf. It's when a golfer scores an 8 on a hole. In other words, it's bad. Also, winter is bad.
  9. Great post. Duffey looks like he's real. I actually think we can a feel good about this game. May will learn from the experience.
  10. I think the third base coach was reacting and supporting the player.
  11. there is something to this but I'm waiting for the "fire Molitor" thread to try to explain what I think happened
  12. no the players always think they are safe. Plouffe let his passions get the best of him. Plouffe will see the play later today and apologize.
  13. I actually typed this the pitch before the grad slam, not that anyone feels better about it
  14. Molitor messed up taking Duffey out, unfortunately
  15. Good lord May looks discombobulated
  16. Some serious managing by both sides here in the 7th
  17. interesting thought--Plouffie even refused to come off the bag, which was weird, since he was out by a mile
  18. we have a million slow runners in the lineup today, another chance might come along?
