  1. Yes you are right. The selective service. It's all a little murky to me. Although, the chances of ever having a draft again are pretty close to zero, if only for the reason that commanders don't want to lead anyone who doesn't want to be there (against their will).
  2. Draft age was 19 maybe? Not sure if it was legislation that ended the draft or just DoD changed it themselves. Some of the vietnam vets can maybe speak to that. Yes, I know that at age 17, and with parent/guardian permission, a kid can ship off to boot camp. At least that was the rule a few years ago when the force was larger. (but HS Diploma or GED was also a requirement)
  3. The service takes 17 year olds, therefore some guys in the service aren't even old enough to buy a pack of smokes legally.
  4. Thanks. How much playing time should Mauer be getting? In essence, that's really all we are asking. Some folks don't present the evidence or articulate the questions as well as many of you would like. It's hard to tell what questions, if any, the front office has been asking up to this point, though hopefully they will shift this conversation into fifth gear with the publishing of the Pioneer Press articles. It's also a credit that the Twins acquired Byung-ho Park whose natural position is 1B, and it might be nice to get Park some innings this spring.
  5. Yes. There are better ways to manage this than merging threads, in my opinion. Though I don't envy the job of editing this site. Here would be an interesting experiment. Next time you are hosting a party, and you notice that there are, say, three groups of two or three people in their own circles, but all talking about the same thing, try forcing them all together into one big group of 8 people, and then say to them, "now talk."
  6. Where did you hear that detail? Is it being repeated on a talk radio show?
  7. I was thinking in terms of both players suffering concussions and other injuries but still able to play competitively.
  8. I like the Manning analogy. With both Mauer and Manning it's been a little bit of everything. Like a poster on another thread stated, it really needs to come down to what Mauer can do on the field. Maybe with a part time or platoon role, Mauer's numbers will recover and we can all get along again.
  9. The only thing I disagree with, Doc, is your assertion that there have always been Mauer doubters. I think Mauer had fans in everyone for a long time. Then there was the bilateral leg weakness (still not sure what that is), which was the season that coincided with the team collapse (63-99). It was hard to see photos of a smiling healthy-looking Mauer from the waist up, rehabbing down in Fort Myers while the team was going in the tank up in Minneapolis. I think only at that point did it really get sour for a few people--the vocal minority you mentioned.
  10. Gives me chills!
  11. I think Obama will handle this carefully and responsibly. I will even predict a final nominee who is different from Sotomayor by race, and opposite of Kagan in gender. That way, "everyone" is happy. The next Supreme Court term begins in early October (before the election) so backwards plan from that date to meet the necessary deadlines and seat the next justice.
  12. LOL The Constitution cannot be amended. It just showed up one day. What we got is what we got. You can either defend it, or trample it like the liberals do. Get off my lawn.
  13. Well said.
  14. I disagree with your conclusions but I love your title.
  15. Another problem with this whole issue is that Terry Ryan just said Mauer could bat .300 again. So, not sure if you are including him in that group.
  16. I'm not sure it's fair to say there's nothing new in this article except the sunglasses. But then, I'm not around the team every day. In fact I would say that this article actually raises more questions than it answers.
  17. Did you read the PP article? Mauer basically says just the opposite.
  18. Also if I recall, when Mauer was catching, he experimented with the "hockey goalie" catcher masks which were designed to absorb blows much more effectively than traditional masks. Like most other catchers, Mauer declined using the safer mask because it wasn't as comfortable.
  19. I'm not sure about the Sonny Gray comp. Following up, it looks like the 2012 season you cite was his first full season in pro ball and it was AA ball, at that. So who knows how he was coached or what he was told to work on. The Keuchel comp is a really good one though. Interestingly, what nick said about K rates peaking in high A, Keuchel's best K rate was 7.2/9 in high A. That is still significantly higher than what Stewart achieved, though. In other threads, there has been talk about his mechanics and injury tendencies. Maybe Stewart is better suited to the bullpen.
  20. In fairness, Detroit is more a player in the free agent market, also Chicago to a lesser extent, and as for Kansas City....that story has been written.
  21. True. However, as a matter of preference, I would rather see a young guy come up and struggle than watch an end-of-the-road vet like Nolasco pitch slightly-below average in the attempt to salvage some value from him. In the case of Meyer, he wasn't called up in 2014 so we don't know. If we hypothetically kept Berrios in the minors for the entire 2016 season I would imagine he would hit a real rough patch at some point like Meyer did, and his confidence would sag, too, just like Meyer's apparently did.
