    We'll see. Danny Santana got four months to demonstrate he was the second worst full time hitter in the major leagues last year, ahead of only starting catcher Rene Rivera on the Tampa Bay Rays. I think the Twins could have at least tried Hicks in a platoon for a couple of months, tried Pinto at catcher for a couple of months, and then still traded Hicks in June or July for the same price of a backup catcher if he wasn't working out. The Twins see something in Murphy, so we'll see.

    16 episodes already! I've only listened to a couple, none for a while now, and haven't gotten to the famous TR one yet (probably dated by now). Stick with it.

    Really good point. But I saw Hicks more as the calm 'yin' of that hypothetical platoon who actually split time 50/50 despite being on the natural short end, getting some starts vs righties when Arcia needed some cooling off or the when the matchup looked better with Hicks in it, for whatever reason, and then of course the late inning subbing when necessary. When in center, Hicks did not have a great jump on balls behind him, but playing in front of the shorter right field fences mitigated that. Anyway, it's all beside the point now. The Twins have their reasons for doing this which we are not privy to.

    Fun little summary. Very old school, like you said. Three interesting takeaways: 1. The Yankees had been negotiating for Hicks for weeks. 2. The Yankees claim they are taking advantage of the Hunter/Hicks mentorship season. 3. According to Cashman, the Brian McCann - J R Murphy starter-backup catching relationship was basically like the Favre-Rodgers QB relationship in Green Bay!     I agree Buxton might make it opening day. Maybe even lead off. And Sano is more likely to play in the outfield now with Hicks out. The last thing we need is a Buxton-Sano collision in the outfield

    In terms of defense, Fangraphs rates Murphy down at the bottom with Suzuki, Pinto, and Pierzynski. So hopefully Murphy brings some intangibles.

    Here's another thing I don't get. Ryan and Molitor seem very serious in their concern for Sano's strikeout totals. Are they also concerned with Park and Palka's strikeout tendencies?

    What is your opinion on what will happen with Vargas, Plouffe, Arcia, Hicks, Kepler, Walker and the rest? All those guys have value or at least some real potential, but no position to play. At least when Nishioka was signed there was a spot for him.

    When Terry Ryan says Plouffe is a solid middle of the order bat, I think he means Brian Dozier. As someone said above, if Plouffe was a #7 hitter, he'd be good. There's no reason to go into 2016 with Plouffe hitting behind Sano when Rosario and Dozier are more capable of hitting behind Sano.

    Now that we all agree (not really) that the Twins need to keep Plouffe, the next question is, what could Sano get back in a trade?

    It's good to know there aren't a lot of third baseman on the market this winter. I do think the Twins are overrating Plouffe, however. Like you said, he's not in the upper half of third baseman with the stick. He was outslugged last year by Rosario and Escobar. Plouffe is not a guy we can't live without, and in fact he's blocking our best hitting prospect since Joe Mauer came up. So, there's that.

    I will double down on this part of your comment. I would like to see Pinto get an honest shot. In 2014 he was Deduno's personal caddy, and 2015 started off with a concussion and went down hill from there. "His bat was never in question," we were told, and Suzuki and Pierzynski are already about the worst defensive catchers as measured by Fangraphs, so what do we have to lose? Free Pinto!

    I would be dead-set against any of the pitchers. A really big piece like Plouffe or Hicks would need to be traded before Span or Morneau make any sense. I also think Span can pull a multi-year contract from someone.

    It's interesting that generally speaking, all the "old school" managers who were let go this offseason were replaced by youngish, analytic-minded guys,* and all the youngish guys were replaced by older guys with experience. If Gardy would be willing to reinvent himself a bit, and be willing to bring on some cyber sabermetric minded coaches, he could be a very appealing candidate. Or maybe after another year off, he will lose the itch to manage again. Time will tell. * granted, everyone should be somewhat analytical-minded at this point

    The Gophs played such a huge game. They drove down the field at the end of the 4th quarter, making huge plays. And then that.

    I'd almost take a regressed Escobar over a return-to-normal Santana in 2016. I'm guessing 2015 was an aberration for Santana and a lot of other young guys. EDIT: what stringer bell said. Santana will be fine as a utility guy and fill in if necessary, and maybe he does find his hitting stroke again in a part time role.

    Don't sugar coat it. Danny was starting shortstop through late July! It's also a little concerning that TD posters were all over this last offseason and guys like Parker and red muppet guy can apparently identify swing deficiencies that you wonder if coaches can identify---partly kidding I'm certain the Twins coaches are doing this at a higher level but maybe Bruno has a little of the Ted Williams coaching style in him: "just go out there and hit. It's easy." without being able to help guys understand. We need to figure out why our best hitters slump so bad as the season wears on. All said, good suggestion that maybe Santana is meant to be a center fielder, or for this team a 4th outfielder who only gets in a couple games a week. He improved a ton in Center through the course of 2014. The time to trade him was last offseason.

    Tim Lincecum is under 6' feet, and he didn't even take care of himself off the field while winning those Cy Youngs. But he had stuff.

    I'd rather invest that free agent money in analytics and staff. I'd rather bring in additional staff with new approaches and new ideas. Make sure guys like Berrios, May, and Duffey are set up for success. Also, the Twins shouldn't write off Alex Meyer. It wasn't too long ago that Meyer was a fast track to the majors. Bringing in new staff and new ideas is a lot to ask of a conservative organization like the Twins, but it's a lot cheaper to develop your own guys than pay big money for other teams retreads.

    Dumb question. Can the Twins rework Mauer's contract? Maybe instead of his 23,23,23,0,0,0,0.., Mauer might agree to something like 18,13,8,3,3,3,3,3,3,... This gives the team payroll flexibility, and gives Mauer more flexibility should he decide to retire or take a reduced role at some point before (or after) the hard 2018 date.
