  1. Here's a fun idea. The Yankees have said Ichiro is available and is willing to be a LH hitting 4th OF. I'd deal Diamond for Ichiro if the Yankees pay half the salary.
  2. Bartlett makes little sense in the OF compared to Presley. Presley complements Hicks as a platoon and has much more defensive experience in the OF than Bartlett. The Twins could grab another 4th OF off waivers from another team or make a trade (Diamond for De Aza?).
  3. I have a feeling Bartlett is just there in case Florimon has a setback. I'm calling Colabello as making the roster since he platoons with the other DH and backs up 1B. That means Kubel or Parmelee for the last slot and it is most likely Kubel. Hicks and Pinto make the team. I didn't necessarily see that coming a month ago.
  4. Players who are on a minor league contract are by definition not on the 40 man roster and are just reassigned to minor league camp. Players on the 40 man roster have to stay with the team or can be "optioned" to the minors up to 3 times in their career.
  5. Thinking more, this is really Kubel or Parmelee. Colabello has been hitting well, backs up 1B and platoons with the other DH. Kubel has a better track record but is nearing the end of his career and is a poor defender. Parmelee hasn't really proven he belongs but still has some potential. This will be a tough call but my guess is Parmelee gets cut.
  6. Really only 27 players to worry about. I don't see Bartlett making the team and Rohlfing is just there to play catch. Congratulations to Pinto. I like our two-car garage catching rotation. I think Hicks is going to make the team. That should mean two spots for Colabello, Kubel or Parmelee. The last slot comes down to Diamond or Thielbar and Thielbar has options.
  7. 50 game suspension to start the season
  8. Why would they want to keep Bartlett? He's been awful.
  9. Well, yeah. The other half of the DH platoon is Kubel or Parmelee. I'd rather have Pinto catch and Colabello DH than having Pinto DH and Chris Herrmann catching.
  10. If Pinto is hitting well enough to DH he should be the starting catcher. I think Colabello could be the other side of the DH platoon and hit as well as Pinto.
  11. They paid 2014 market value for 2017 and get an under-market option for 2018. 2017 market value will almost certainly be higher. Perkins is a very effective LH reliever. He might pitch until he's 40 like Dan Plesac and Darren Oliver. Eddie Guardado was effective until age 35.
  12. Providing housing might make sense for the rookie teams situated near the spring training complexes because it could be used year-round. I would be surprised if they don't have a discount rate at a local extended stay hotel. That would be a better solution for temporary housing of players and team personnel as well as visiting teams. I can't see dormitory housing making sense for a married baseball player with kids. Better to just give them money and let them use it to find appropriate housing. NBA development league players get $13000 minimum with housing and insurance benefits. The lowest minor league hockey players get $325 a week which is a little more than rookie league baseball players.
  13. I meant perfect knowledge if you want to make sure the best baseball players are incented to play baseball. The draft is a crap-shoot past the first round.
  14. Except the CFL. One point I just remembered is the two groups at the bargaining table just negotiated those amateur signing bonuses downward and that savings is enough to boost minor league wages significantly. Is a team allowed to double the pay of their minor league players? It would be a creative way to get around international bonus pool limits if they offered more pay instead of a large signing bonus. From a quick google search it appears that teams can negotiate pay after the first year which is set by contract. The Twins could make themselves very attractive to international free agents if they're known as the team that pays double.
  15. That only works if you think the baseball draft is made with perfect knowledge of the future potential of the draftees. That clearly isn't the case. High round picks bust often and low round picks make the majors.
  16. On strikeouts - the league has been trending upwards too. Most batters will be on an upward trend.
  17. There is another benefit of having a strong minor league system - it helps develop major league players. When the talent level is higher the development in the minors is of more value.
  18. That's the general consensus - TV in general and the ability to watch major league baseball as well as other sports on television shrank the minor leagues. However, the teams that are left have done fairly well, especially the AA and AAA teams which have been able to leverage their towns for nice new minor league ballparks.
  19. There are clear ways to tell that this is monopoly power setting the price, not a fair market 1) Everyone makes the same paycheck 2) 6 year minor league free agents make more money 3) The independent leagues pay higher wages
  20. On 3 - I know why there are restrictions. I think they are too heavy handed. They should be able to find a way to allow some outside work without banning all of it. On 4 - Do you believe in the free market or not? There are most certainly players who could make the big leagues that turn it down because they can't afford to be poor for 5 years. Are you asserting that supply and demand is baloney? MLB is oversupplied with teenagers who can still live at home in the offseason and Dominicans with no other options. That doesn't mean it has cornered the market on athletes. You contradict yourself with your example - the only way to get a talented multisport athlete to play baseball is to give them a huge bonus. There are players almost, but not quite, as good as Stewart every year who turn down a 3rd round signing bonus to play football or basketball. I want to see guys like Kenny Lofton playing baseball, not going to Europe to play basketball.
  21. The thing that bothers me most about the NCAA is how they prohibit the athlete from making money doing something else. If an amateur athlete is also a good musician and can make money selling records they should be allowed to do it. The "free market" types should be most upset about this. This is one reason MLB has trouble getting multisport athletes to play baseball. If you're not just rooting for laundry and want to see the best athletes at the top level you should want to see this situation changed. Better minor league pay will mean better baseball in the big leagues.
  22. I forgot about this one. Housing is more expensive when you're looking for monthly or weekly housing. Minor leaguers are moving around constantly. If the lawsuit starts gaining traction expect to see a settlement that doesn't cost much more than that $1M per team number. Lawyers get paid a lot more than minor league ballplayers.
  23. I can see why playing college baseball looks so appealing, especially since those players will usually play summer ball.
  24. On home game days they're working at least 6 hours. If they play 6 games a week that's 36 hours. On a road trip you should count any time spent on the bus as work time.
  25. 5,000x20=100,000, not 1M. There are close to 200 minor league players per team if you disregard the foreign rookie leagues.
