  1. Well, many viewers are as enamored with the history of the game, as much as they are in love with watching the present games played out, let alone analyzing it at a mathematical level. I agree that there are many other stats that should get run on the broadcast. And probably some explanation and discussion that can be worked in pre-game or during their KG/Jamie cuts. Part of baseball's magic is its timelessness which is why the Steroid era is so difficult for fans to get past. Even if our evaluation has changed, the game remains roughly the same. ERA, W/L, K's, BA, HR, RBI remain staples in evaluating results. Frankly, those tuning in who care about advanced metrics are probably already fangraphs regulars and/or members of this blog and don't need them referenced during the broadcast.
  2. Baseball is a game of numbers and history. It is a game with infinite intricacies and variables. In many respects, the game is ultimately a game of results. Who cares if a stat line reflects luck or skill if you're comparing and analyzing results and not making predictions? It's not like our advanced metrics are perfect or even accurate to begin with. If you want to take the luck element out of the game, then combine the best metrics we have, put them in a computer, and name a champion after a season's worth of statistical input simulated over an additional 10,000 seasons. IF we can agree that our statistics have flaws which can be debated, but results are what they are and cannot be debated; then in the interest of brevity, understanding, and respect for both the history of the game and casual baseball fan, can we agree that results-based stats DO in fact have some value, just perhaps not for prediction or talent evaluation?
  3. So so true... Maybe someday I'll learn!
  4. Never thought about it that way... Would this team beat that team in a 7 game series? Out of the players that weren't new additions, I can really only say that Zuke, Duensing, Esco, Milone, and maybe May are performing better than earlier this year. Other than that, pretty much every other player on the team is playing worse, and in Dozier, Pelfrey, Perk, and Hunter's case, much worse. (Mauer's been worse as far as driving in runs, but he has been hitting pretty dreadfully the whole season). I think I'd take our prior team playing really well over the current team playing poorly plus new guys playing well. However, I like the potential of this team much MUCH more. *Is Nolasco actually a good player? ERA 5.51, FIP: 2.82, xFIP 4.00 .9 WAR in only 7 starts (5-1).
  5. In fairness, I would have certainly expected some regression on BA and OBP. I would not have expected he'd go from 7 HR to 0. I would not have expected him to struggle so badly on defense. I actually called for him to start in center because I thought he was better than Robinson, Schaefer and Hicks. I thought Escobar deserved the starting shortstop position. I actually remember there being some disconnect between Gardy and upper management about Santana's usage down the stretch (and not calling up Meyer). Gardy wanted to continue with Santana in center, Ryan strongly wanted to see Santana go back to short. I think that partly led to Ryan saying Gardy's job was not in jeopardy in August before firing him after the season. I think Santana starting at short was a prerequisite for selection of our current manager. I haven't given up on Santana if he can go back to trying to rip the ball all over the field. His value will likely be as flexible bench option though.
  6. I can't stand when players weakly offer at off-speed pitches in hitter's counts. Punto would always do that. I like Thome's approach of swinging hard in case you make contact. Save the defensive swings for when you have 2 strikes.
  7. Time to take advantage!
  8. Pelfrey doesn't like to pitch in to righties too much does he...
  9. Rosario has some trouble going to his left... Maybe he should be a right fielder with that gun?
  10. Pelfrey seems to have good stuff today. He seems to be picking a little too much.
  11. Was making pickles. Missed Sano's HR. Was it bomb?
  12. An Arcia like fall is much more likely. The player he most reminds me of as a hitter is Jaque Jones. Good fielder, free swinger, good power to all fields. Like Jones, i expect Rosario's power to improve and for him to gradually start to transition to more of a pull power hitter with his avg likely to drop into the .240 or lower, but good power and defense. Basically Arcia plus defense. No reason he can't hit 20 hr/yr if he learns to wait for his pitch. If he does turn into Arcia, hopefully it takes him less time to adjust to the leagues adjustment.
  13. Save some of those bullets for the mlb pen jose! Get that kid up here.
  14. Brock, excellent counter point, trout still looks like a bargain at this point. Is that an argument for waiting until arb though?
  15. Tobi, extremely good point and well stated. Nice to be talking about locking up am elite talent. But yeah, it puts into perspective the twins flaws in their unwillingness to sign elite free agent talent. Your advantage in growing your own, might be only for a year or two if you plan to keep them anyway.
  16. Yeah, I don't understand how posters can lambaste anyone who dares suggest that Mauer go back to catching, but they have no problem pushing Pinto back behind the plate (who can't really say no because he needs the money) and has had TWO concussions within a couple months. Who's being put in danger again? That being said, if Pinto is made aware of the dangers, and wants to roll the dice for the big bucks, it's his call. Similarly, if Mauer realizes he is playing himself out of first-ballot hall of fame status and wants to give it another shot behind the plate as he gets further and further from his last concussion, I would not stop him. I have no idea if he ever would change his mind about it or not. So I won't suggest it. I won't plan for it. I just wouldn't bet against it ever happening like some would.
  17. I hate to be the one always defending Robinson, especially when I've called for Arcia to get the call over him. But what has Robinson done wrong? He's been a perfect defense-first back up outfielder. It isn't his fault that they keep deciding to go with 100 pitchers. He's played at least to expectations this year. There's no guarantee whatsoever that Arcia would have made the team better. In my mind, I'd have wanted to see, but he might have continued to be dreadful. At this point, the season is slipping away. Rosters expand in a week and a half. Cutting Robinson to bring up players he might well be better than at this point would be unprofessional at this point. I suppose you could pay out his contract and insurance, but I'd only do that if we were completely out of it, going young, and wanted to give him an opportunity to catch on with another team if they wanted to pick up his contract.
  18. Not meaning this as any sort of slight. I respect your baseball opinions, but i sort of think you're making my point about not being able to give credit. You conceded that the moves saved money. The Pohlads may be cheap, but they're somewhat forth coming about the self imposed salary cap. Saving money matters IF you do something with the savings. Which I've admitted, he hasn't done enough with them... yet?
  19. Seriously? You don't think Buxton, sano, and "truly" young players are concerned with their future contracts already? Appearances matter. As for "cherry picking" I'm the one asking to look at BOTH tr's and boyer and hunters successes and failures, instead of cherry picking the failures. If you think boyer and hunter were bad signings, fine. I think they were good, and the failure was not their signings, but in their over use and inability to bring in other players at the deadline. That's fair isn't it?
  20. I think they were going to call him up in the next few anyway. Just a matter of opinion. There is a difference between believing a player isn't ready and wanting to see a few games first. I think they were doing the latter. Bummer about hicks. Would not be surprised if this was his last game with us.
  21. Are you saying the Perkins and Dozier signings aren't going to save us money? Do don't think they send the right messages to other young players in our organization? Hunter's value is somewhat debated. Same boyer. They have contributed and hurt the team somewhat at times. If the criticism is for staying with them too long with no help (as opposed to over use) then give him credit for the time they helped.
  22. Terry Ryan deserves some credit in getting the team back to respectability. The future is bright. I think it's fair, given his history, to question whether he is best to lead toward championship. It's not really fair to look at his biggest mistakes, and not credit him for things like the Dozier and Perkins signing, finding Boyer and Hunter for half the year, perhaps the patience with Hicks, etc.
  23. Wait what about Molitor's contract? Oh but managers can be fired... but probably not after a season... TK and Gardy both made the playoffs in their first years...
  24. What would Doug Mientkiewicz have done? And what will he do in Boston... next season...
  25. Shane Robinson still has a 0.00 ERA. I feel like I remember Perkins coming up with injuries after bad performances in the past, and Gardy blasting him for either not coming forward before he blew the game or not just toughing it out instead of blaming some lame injury.. I could never tell which...
