  1. No fastballs from street, and yet no thought of stealing. ..
  2. Interesting call there... i like a steal over a bunt. Both are risks.
  3. Is it always hunter, rosario, Suzuki due up to end the game?
  4. That's a double play if caught cleanly. Contact play was on.
  5. For instance. .. you can go get him.
  6. Boyer seems pretty solid when he comes in with no one on, is well rested, and is yanked as soon as he gets tired.
  7. Seem the team has been playing too well to not get paid off... need a big walk off and a double header sweep.
  8. That's actually what I meant. If it were the concussion, he'd be better by now [if he was ever going to get better].
  9. Mauer came off an injury in 2009 and hit 28 HR in 606 pa. He's hit 45 HR in 6 seasons since in around 3,200 pa. As I recall, Mauer came back in May, after kidney stone surgery to post something like 11 HR in month one and 9 more in June. His numbers continued to tail the further he got away from his off season recovery. After that season he signed a massive contract which many bemoan to this day. Perhaps too many people focus on what's wrong with Joe, and not enough on what did Joe do differently in 2009? The eye test says Mauer isn't nearly the same player. The stats back it up. I think Parker did a breakdown this spring on Joe, and he was one of the worst at catching up to heat in all of baseball last year, and swung and missed at breaking balls far more often as well. I think he's just declining. His bat speed is going, and for a guy who already lets the ball get deep, a drop in bat speed is deadly. If it was the concussion, he'd be better by now. Either way, he'll probably never be better than he is now. Scary thought. I think my frustration, and most fans' frustration is the continued insistence on batting Joe 3rd.
  10. Looks like some promising arms. Do we know anything more about their stuff and how it will play at higher levels?
  11. I've been calling for Hughes to move to the pen for months now. Pen was broken. Hughes was having a rough go. Maybe he doesn't get hurt if he was moved. He's been successful in the pen in the past compared with May who'd never relieved. Now how to stretch May back out...
  12. Someone on the radio said that Molitor had hinted that Kepler would likely join the team after their season ended. But those darn Lookouts just keep winning. I hope MIentkiewicz doesn't bolt to another organization (Red Sox). He's moved up with many of his best prospects. That list is starting to dwindle with ABW and Kep likely to jump to AAA next season and Polanco, Bux, and Sano already gone. I don't know how interested he'll be in bringing along Gordon et al next season, although the Kernals may be a championship squad too.
  13. Not the end. We're probably playing as well as the Astros. But the Indians are playing much better than both of us, and we have them 7 times. I really don't like our chances of holding off the tribe this year, let alone catching the 'Stros. We've been remarkably resilient after tough losses. We're certainly not getting blown out. So maybe we're playing better than I think and the wins will keep coming, but tonight was a tough tough loss. I'm not even sure I can pick 1 player to blame, there were so many.
  14. What about Dozier's K with the bases loaded. Sano bailed him out, but seriously, how long can we send him out there at the front of our line up?
  15. Doesn't ISO just basically give us a percentage of extra base power hits/per hit? Thus if a player hit more singles AND more extra base hits, his ISO wouldn't really change? And if it went up, wouldn't that be the identifiable change you were looking for? His ISO is .189 which doesn't mean he's hitting better, but it does show he's hitting more extra base hits relative to singles. This signifies a change in approach. Esco OPS: 2013 - .628; 2014 - .721; 2015 - .767. This is an upward trend covering 3 seasons. He had 35 doubles last season. He's hitting his peak as a 26 year old who is getting comfortable with steady playing time. This might be his peak. But he doesn't even have to be as good as he has been this year to be a highly valuable piece. His BABIP is sitting at .309 which does not scream regression like Santana's BABIP did last season. If anything, the way Esco has been stinging the ball would lead me to think he should actually have a higher BABIP with average luck (harder contact usually means more hits). And his homerun tracker data shows that he should probably have more home runs with better luck as well. The consecutive seasons he's put up as an every day MLB SS is really starting to overshadow the prior years of minor league mediocrity in terms of statistical relevance in my opinion.
  16. Was I really defending Plouffe on the "trade Plouffe" thread? Rethinking.
  17. What was so bad about Boyer's outing tonight? Seems like he's been pretty good at getting grounders when he's well rested. He struggles getting K's. No one's perfect!
  18. Haphazzard or organized chaos? He's drawn more walks, hit for power from both sides. I have zero problem with his approach. I would say Escobar has marginal plate discipline which he makes up for with fantastic hand-eye coordination. I think his success is sustainable, but am worried that he's becoming to homer-happy (pull happy), although he's shown the ability to hit the ball with authority to the opposite field, as opposed to having to learn to do that (Dozier). He's also hit some absolute bombs as opposed to down-the-line wall scrapers. This tells me his power is no fluke. In fact only 2 of his 11 HR are considered "just enough" by ESPN's Homerun tracker compared to 9 of 27 for Dozier and 8-16 for Sano. Every one of Esco's HR's this year would have been out in half of the parks, and most would have been gone in almost all parks. So his HR totals may actually be expected to go up. http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2015_4325&type=hitter
  19. 19th out of 21 listed 1B in OPS?? Only listed 1B with less than 14 HR? 16th in OBP? Not sure your point.. I would disagree that no one would be complaining except for the contract. The much bigger issue is the position. He's starting at a position that would be fairly easy to upgrade both offensively and defensively. He's not really hurting the team, but neither do I see him helping the team, mentoring or encouraging young players, or taking extra BP. It is whatever. I don't think the Mauer "bashers" are really out of control, I just think they get egged on easily by Mauer apologists and outlandish predictions that Mauer will suddenly revert back to winning tons of batting titles. It's not impossible, but super unlikely. Better odds: Mauer wins a batting title, Tiger wins another major, or Jered Allen leads the NFL in sacks? It's pretty rare to see players improve at this stage. To his credit, he's stayed on the field this year. I just hope he doesn't decline to the point where it gets real ugly.
  20. I would guess that even with Sano's arrival, Plouffe still probably has more value for this team than for any other. I highly doubt any team will over-pay to get him. And I don't think the Twins should take anything less than an over-pay to deal him. We should be gunning for pennants next season. There is little chance, in my mind, that a team will give up anyone who can get us closer to that goal than Plouffe would. I'm always open to offers, but I'm shopping Rosario over Plouffe. Every organization has 3rd base prospects with Plouffe upside. Just in this thread, we've had people suggest Travis Harrison, Brian Dozier, Sano, and I'll throw Eddie Rosario into that conversation as guys who might be able to step in and produce comparably. So why would another team trade much for a player who people view as so easily replaced from within?
  21. Buxton makes a slightly better late game defensive sub than Robinson, no slight to Shane.
  22. To be fair, I'm not sure the people saying that Garza is a "head case" actually mean he's mentally imbalanced in all aspects of his life. Just on the mound. His seeing a psychologist doesn't mean he has problems controlling his emotions, but anyone can see he does. He should be applauded for caring for his mental health and seeing a therapist whether it was simply a sports psychologist or otherwise. At any rate, I don't think people mean anything offensive when they say Garza is a head case. Just that his seemingly common emotional outbursts hold him back.
  23. I mean realistically speaking, San Diego doesn't see themselves as rebuilding so much as rebounding. Their unwillingness to unload at the deadline tells me they're hoping to have better luck next year. And maybe even looking to buy harder during the off season. I seem to be a bigger Shields guy than most, but i think we need to change our focus to more attainable assets.
  24. Whether Shields "holds down" Berrios, May, Duffey, etc. isn't a "hole in my theory", it's difference of opinion on what might happen in the future. Shields will almost certainly begin a decline in effectiveness. A declining Shields is still likely better than many young promising pitchers will end up being at their peak. But if my theory has hole, yours has a chasm. Shields doesn't have to be better than [insert young talented arm here]. You can have BOTH! If we rolled with Shields, Santana, Berrios, Hughes, and Nolasco next season with Duffey spot starting and May, Jepsen, Perkins out of the pen, I am liking our chances. If you want Duffey in the rotation, put Hughes in the pen where he has had success in the past. That's a pretty solid mix of youth and experience built to win a lot of games in the regular season and give you a decent chance in a playoff series.
