  1. The benefit Napoli could have long term is instilling a winning culture. Maybe he could show these young kids that losing is unacceptable.
  2. With Cuddyers comments about building a winning culture and how they had that when he came through the system but lost it later, I think signing a veteran like Napoli might make sense. Maybe too many of our young guys are just going through the motions, cant' wait to get home or don't know their place on the team. I think there is no denying that having Torii Hunter in the clubhouse had a massive impact on the team. Maybe Napoli is like that. Both of our new front office guys have had him on their teams before.
  3. Oh, sure they need to figure it out, but I'll be sorely disappointed if they spend a lot of money to go out and get a free agent first basemen. I think you can fill the 1B slot from within (Mauer/Vargas/Sano/Park). I mean honestly, if our 1B got the offensive production that Dozier got and our 2B got the production that our 1B got, no one would be overly concerned about things.
  4. The new front office shouldn't waste their time worry about first base. There are options, and while not great, they are decent. Spend their time worrying about the pitching staff.
  5. I didn't read through the entire thread, but I got thinking about how Molitor has been managing later in this season. He's made some mind boggling decisions, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that he might be managing for the future. I've thought it was odd a few times that he used Suzuki as a pinch hitter. Didn't seem to make sense. But, what if the Twins think about signing Suzuki to a 1 year/low money contract to be the backup catcher next year. Might make sense to see how he handles pinch hitter things. It seems like he's let pitchers go too long in some games, especially Gibson. He seems to fall apart. However, if Gibson is part of the rotation, you need to know what you have from him. If you are fighting for a playoff spot, you probably pull Gibson in the 5th inning when he walks the first 2 hitters. When you are out of the playoff, you might let him battle through it to see if he can. Could his bullpen usage also be looking to the future? Can Brandon Kintzler be a multi-inning closer? You'll never know until you try. What a better time to try than when you have nothing to lose. Why not also see how effective relievers are on back to back nights. Certainly doesn't excuse April/May, but might excuse the rest of the season. Personally, I would demand the new GM keep Molitor on, but I would suggest it and I would have no problem if the new GM did want to keep Molitor for one more year.
  6. So for the Angles, Meyer has pitched 7.1 innings, gave up 5 runs, 6 H, 8K and 6BB and we think the Angels have turned him around? Seriously?
  7. Right now, where do you put ABW? In theory, you've got Rosario/Buxton/Kepler entrenced in the outfield. Sure, you could give ABW a cup of coffee right now, but the Twins will really want to see the other guys through. It will be interesting to see what the new POBO and GM will do. If it were me, I'd shop all 4 of those outfielders, trade one if you get a good offer and go with the other 3. You can always get a 4th outfielder.
  8. The bolded items can be contradictory. What if a player's maximum value is as a hitter and keeping him the lineup most often requires you to jerk him around the field at different positions?
  9. Do those teams have 40 man roster spots available to block moves like that and will they want to use those 40 man spots to try and block a Kintzler or Suzuki trade or do they want to risk them blocking other trades.
  10. I do think Suzuki will be dealt today. However, if the Twins know they won't re-sign him next year and want to get an extended look at Murphy or even Garver, they may just let whatever team claims him have him, or work out a trade for a PTBNL or cash. I would rather trade Abad or Kintzler, but if they don't move them now, they will be put on waivers and they "might" be able to trade them in August. No guarentee they can of course.
  11. All are interesting ones. If the Twins are done with Suzuki and just want to move on, they may let someone claim him and just let him go. Teams might not have urgency for Abad or Kintzler, but since they both are relatively cheap next year, teams may claim them and actually want to trade them. Considering people are thinking a Low Minors lottery ticket for either of them, that same sort of return could be had in August.
  12. Suzuki, Abad and Kintzler would be claimed, but probably by someone that might actually want them, and thus a trade could be worked out.
  13. On the other hand, now that Cashner is no longer available, do the Rangers, Orioles, Astros, Blue Jays and Giants have new interest in Santana now they they lost out on acquiring Cashner? It seems to me like if any of those teams thought they had a shot at Cashner, they wouldn't have even listened to offers for Santana. They might listen now.
  14. Unless we have knowledge of what was actually offered for Willingham, do we really know if it was wrong not to trade him?
  15. I thought I was reading that the Twins only have 37 guys right now on the 40 man (plus Perkins and Hughes). If they trade Kintzler, Abad, Nolasco (dream), Milone and/or Suzuki for minor league guys, they could have a lot of 40 man spots open. If you know you are going to protect someone from the Rule V and you have plenty of open 40 man spots, no reason not to add them early if you want to see them in September.
  16. I would like to see Sano finish the year at third and start next year at third to really give him a fair shake there. If you look at the errors he is making at 3B, he is going to be making the same errors at 1B, plus probably more errors on throws from the infielders. Mauer might improve offensively at DH. Personally, I'd like to see how Mauer does offensively if they give him a game or 2 off each week. Look at what Suzuki is doing this year when he has only started more than 3 games in a row 3 times all season. Might work for Joe too. In a Dream World, the Twins could ship Joe off to a team that wins him a World Series. In that case, I'd like to see Sano at DH and Vargas or Park at 1B.
  17. Good lord. Not everyone who can play 3B can be as effective at 1B and not everyone who can play 3B can be as affective at 1B. To play 3B, you need to be able to make the throw to first base. You are also going to get a lot balls hit your way than you will at first base (because there are more right handed hitters than left handed hitters). To play 1B, your arm isn't as important. However, you need to be able to catch the ball and bail out your other infielders with your glove. There is nothing like it at 3B. Now, I do think Mauer could probably turn into a good third basemen. It'd take some time to adjust, but he'd probably do a pretty good job. I also think Sano will work out the kinks at 3B. He can make some amazing plays there, so I think he'll get used to the more routine ones eventually. Sano's biggest advantage at 3B is his arm. You could argue, that even if Mauer fields the position a little better than Sano at 3B, Sano's cannon gives him the edge over Mauer at 3B. However, that arm is zero value at first base, so just because its possible that Sano>Mauer at 3B defensively DOES NOT mean that Sano>Mauer at 1B.
  18. He probably does, but I don't think giving Garver a cup of coffee at the major league level and then having to spend a full year in AAA next year is a terrible idea. Honestly, the starting C position next year should be an open competition between Murphy, Centeno and Garver and anyone else they bring in. If Garver is the top option, let him make the jump.
  19. If they call Garver up, I would think an every other day or 2 out of 3 with Centeno makes sense for a Catcher's first dip into the major league level.
  20. Mauer is a better first basemen defensively. I've never seen Mauer play third base, so who knows what he is like there. Did you see some of the digs Mauer has made, specifically a couple last night on throws Nunez made? I don't think Sano is making those kind of plays at 1B. I don't disagree about Mauer's offense being a problem. However, why would you EVER, EVER put Mauer permanantly at DH when he would clearly be better defensively than whoever we put at 1B? The logic of that is mind boggling? Why would anyone ever think Sano at 1B and Mauer at DH is the way to go? I mean, sure, if we had a gold glove winning 1B waiting in the wings, transition Mauer to DH, but we don't.
  21. I like the idea of giving Garver a shot this year. While it is more likely that Murphy will be the guy, there are some advantages to giving Garver the shot. If he is ready, then we don't have to worry about Murphy next year. If he's not ready, the time spent in the Big Leagues this year would help him learn what he needs to work on in AAA next year.
  22. If Mauer remains in the lineup, its at first base. The only internal option that might be better defensively is Park. If Mauer and Sano are in the same lineup and Sano is not playing 3B, it should be Mauer at 1B and Sano at DH. The only exception to that is if Mauer needs a day off from the field to rest. The only other possible exception is to give Sano defensive reps if they don't think he can stay at 3rd.
  23. And what do the Twins do if Sano doesn't improve at third? If you go with Polanco, Escobar, Sano and Beresford, you're really hampered if you have injuries or if Sano bombs defensively at 3B. I may be wrong, but I don't think there is really a near major league ready 3B in our system. If you keep Dozier, then you could trade Plouffe and Polanco could slide over to 3rd if Sano is hurt or doesn't pan out defensively. If it were me, I'd try to trade Vargas, let Plouffe (if he even gets healthy) play mostly DH (Sano some DH to). Give Polanco SS (and maybe move him around some). If they can trade Dozier for quality, I wouldn't have a problem with that. Trading Plouffe for nothing (which is all you could get for him) is a terrible idea.
  24. Fair point on Gibson. I'm working on the plan that Milone won't be part of next year's rotation. To give you an example of what I'd want in a Santana trade. I would like the trade straight up for the guy they got for Nunez. I would not like the trade if it was for the guy the Rangers gave to the Braves.
  25. Really good trade. Giants AAA manager thinks he should be in majors.
