  1. #1, I was replying to someone talking about how the Twins turned things around in the past. I didn't set that time constraint.
  2. Maybe I should make it clearer. If they can get a Top 100 prospect, or even a AA or AAA guy that looks to turn into low end major leaguer, I think they should. I just would rather not trade him for an A ball project. Two reasons I keep him over an A ball project. #1, I think the Twins could get back into contention next year. There is plenty of talent on the team, so if they do get back into contention, he's still an affordable, affective pitcher. #2, I'm assuming that they will clear Nolasco out, clear Milone out and Hughes probably doesn't recover all that well. Basically I don't see Santana blocking the path of a minor leaguer that MUST be in the majors. I think the Twins should have plenty of spots for those types of guys. Berrios will get his shot. May should get moved back to the rotation. Having Santana still around doesn't prevent that from happening. If I were GM, I'd be calling around to see what I could get for Ricky Nolasco, Kohl Stewart and $13 million.
  3. I'm 100% on board with that. If they can get a top 100 prospect somehow for Santana, go for it 100%. I just don't want a A ball project.
  4. Some people are saying give him away for peanuts. Personally, if they can get a AA or AAA player close to major league ready, I'd say go for it. If they can only get a project from A ball, I say don't. The 1987 team got 89 starts from pitchers over the age of 32. Thats actually not a terrible comparison for the current state of the Twins. 84 had a .500 record. 85 and 86 went backwards (not to the extend that this years Twins are). Then world series in 1987 driven by talented ihtters just entering their prime years and veteran pitching.
  5. You can't have a bullpen and a rotation full of first and second year players, even when you are just building for the future. You have to have some sort of stability there. In the end, I probably would have traded Milone and Abad for that guy from the Rangers. He's like the IF version of Adam Brett Walker. Probably not going to end up a big leaguer due to his propensity for strikeouts, but if he gets that under control, look out.
  6. We have high expectations for Berrios and he will probably have some struggles. My guess is that they will convert May back to a starter. That still leaves 1 spot open, hopefully for Duffey to recover and keep.
  7. Houston got over the hump by having solid young talent and including solid affordable veterans around it. Last year it was Scott Feldman (32 years old) and Scott Kazmir (31 years old) and Roberto Hernandez (34 years old) who helped fill out their rotation. This year it is Doug Fister (32 years old) and Mike Fiers (31 years old) and Scott Feldman (33 years old) that have rounded out their rotation. Ervin Santana fits the mold almost exactly with how Houston is doing it. The Twins problem is having Santana AND Milone AND Nolasco AND Hughes. Hopefully Berrios comes back up and improves.
  8. I agree that changes need to be made in the rotation. I want Nolasco gone and Milone too probably. If they get a good deal for Santana, I'm all about trading him. However, I don't think it makes sense to dump him for anything short of a good deal. Who do you want in the rotation next year? If you don't want Santana, then I assume you want all in house options. Berrios, Gibson, Duffey, May and Dean excite you? Is that building towards the future? Personally, i think keeping Santana and his reasonable contract makes sense if you don't get a good return on a trade.
  9. Agreed. If Gibson and Duffey still struggle next year, Berrios struggles and whoever they fill the rotation with struggles, do you really want the core of this team to go through several 90-100 loss seasons in a row and develop that losing culture?
  10. Personally, I'd want something that would look major league ready in year or 2. Not superstar quality obviously. Lets say the Twins trade Santana, trade Milone and somehow unload Nolasco. Next year's rotation is Gibson, Duffey (who has been really shaky) and Berrios. After that, it might be May and any number of minor leaguers taking their lumps in the majors. How do we all feel about the young offensive core of this team trying to battle through extremely shaky pitching?
  11. Even a mediocre season like 2015 would be worth keeping Santana over giving him up for peanuts. The Twins are a young team. The future of the team is that youth. The Twins are a key juncture right now where they really need to develop a winning culture. That means its very important that they don't tank the rest of the year and that they aren't a terrible team next year. If they tank this year, then great, they get the #1 pick, but all these young guys get a losing culture. If they run into a tough stretch in future years they may just go back to this year and give up. Same thing for next year. You've got guys that will be developing for the future and you need take that incremental step up the winning ladder.
  12. You misquoted him. He's not "making" calls. He didn't say he's not "taking" calls. I'm sure he's listening to every offer given to him.
  13. But based on that trade, thats the kind of return you can expect. Abad is better than the LHP the Rangers got in the deal, so you could maybe expect a little more. Honestly, if thats the return for Milone and Abad, don't you just keep Abad as a cheap bullpen option for next year?
  14. Milone yes. Nolasco not at that price. If you are the GM and you trade Milone today, then get offers Monday to trade both Nolasco and Santana on Monday, what do you do with the rotation? My guess is you aren't getting much for Milone either way, so you can afford to wait to see how things shake out with Nolasco and Santana.
  15. That is really hilarious. In what world is Ervin Santana as valuable as Drew Pomeranz? Pomeranz is far younger and far cheaper than Santana, and as far as I can tell, just as effective if not more effective than Santana. Sure, you don't have to wait for Lucroy to be traded, but if teams think they have a shot at Lucroy, they aren't even going to listen to offers for Suzuki. Abad and Kintzler can still be flipped.
  16. Interesting. What would Twins fans have thought if that was Milone and Abad for Travis Demerritte?
  17. Thats the thing, to get Profar, Texas would need some high end talent. You've got to give up something to get something. Honestly, I think Santana, Suzuki and Stewart would have got it done (before today's trade). I just suggested adding Nuneze and Abad to the trade for the Rangers needs and getting some additional lower end minor leagues in return.
  18. 3 years of a SS. 2017, 2018 and 2019. If Gordon flies through the minors, then Profar can be shifted to 2B (if they trade Dozier), or 3B (if Sano is DH or 1B and Plouffe is gone). It actually gives them extra insurance to trade Plouffe and not really having to worry about what they would do at 3B if Sano doesn't pan out. He has position flexibility. Is it really that much to give up? The Twins have Stewart, Jay, Gonsalves and Jorge all basically at the same level. The Twins are probably never going to get all 4 of them into the rotation, so why not use one of them to pull off a better long term deal. I'm also not suggesting that its 6 Twins players just for Profar. There would be some lower end minor leaguers as part of it as well. What about some sort of deal centered around Kyle Gibson for Jurickson Profar? Both guys are free agents in 2020. Maybe you could even do Ricky Nolasco and Kyle Gibson for Jurickson Profar (plus whatever minor league filler to make it work). I just see that AA Starting Pitching as a point of depth for the Twins. Another point of depth is OF, so if you could package one of the Twins ML trade pieces with Adam Brett Walker to get a much better return, I'd do it to. On maybe a more realistic note, what would people think of a Ervin Santana for Reese Mcguire deal with the Pirates?
  19. But that could just be what he says publically, not what he's actually doing.
  20. Jurickson Profar would be a 3 year guy. He can play all over, but for the Twins, he would be their starting SS, a huge position of need. Not sure he'd be a guy looking to sign an extension that bought out his first FA year but I'm guessing probably not. The Twins could actually help out the Ranges a lot this year and the Rangers have stuff the Twins might want. The Rangers could use SP (lots of injuries) and RP (worst ERA in American League) help. The Rangers have not gotten much production from the Catcher. With Prince Fielder out, they could use some POP at DH and offensive production. If they trade Profar, the definitely need a utility IF and DH help. So what if the Twins offered Santana, Suzuki, Nunez or Escobar, Stewart or another of their top SP prospects and maybe Abad/Kintzler for Profar and a lower end minor leaguer or 2?
  21. What is "market value" for a trade? Its whatever teams are willing to offer you. If Antony gets 10 trade offers for a 23 year old in A ball, thats market value, but Antony shouldn't trade him for that. If you look at the rotation next year, it should be Gibson, Duffey, Berrios and 2 other guys. I think you should dump Nolasco and Milone and fill those last to spots with Santana and May or some other young guy. However, if they get an offer for for a minor league P that would be Top 10 in the minor league system, or a controllable major league catcher, I'd be up for it. Or how about this idea something like this as framework for a deal? Santana, Kohl Stewart + filler for Profar + filler?
  22. I think 2017 is a very realistic goal to be in Wild Card contention. Considering the Twins were in contention at 83-79 last year, you really only have to be a .500 team to be in contention. Add that to the fact that the Twins are 16-14 in their last 30 games, it appears as though they might be back to the same level as they were last year. You would expect growth from the young guys next year (Sano, Buxton, Kepler, Rosario mostly) and other than a continual decline of Mauer, you wouldn't really expect a big step back on the offensive side of the ball. To me, they need to clear Nolasco and probably Milone to open up rotation spots for Berrios and someone else deserving, but beyond that, they should at least be back in contention this year. If the Twins are near .500 the rest of the way, i think that reflects really well on Molitor for not completely losing the team after a disastrous start.
  23. Really? You have first hand knowledge that the Phillies GM drove that trade? How do you know he wasn't bombarded with trade offers and took the best one? Plus, comparing Hamels to Santana is ridiculous. First, even if the $/WAR is the same, by getting doulbe the WAR at double the cost means you still have 4 more rotation spots to fill. You can fill the rest of the rotation with lower WAR guys at a lower cost and still come out ahead in total WAR for your rotation. Probably the biggest difference is that Texas was getting 4.5 years of Hamels. Santana only has 2.5 years left.
  24. Why do you think the Twins are overvalueing their players? Do you have inside information? Maybe the best offer they have gotten is some 23 year old in A ball. Its a nice narrative for people to have. If the Twins don't get a return you like you can blame how they passed on all the better trade offers, waited too long and got garbage.
  25. If they can dump some guys for some decent return at the deadline, I'll be happy.
