I love the Smeltzer season and I hope he comes in and takes some Pineda starts - Pineda is not the future and Smeltzer might be. What I hope does not happen in the Romero treatment (an extension of the Sano to RF treatment). He should not be made a reliever at this point. And speaking of Sano, I am not impressed by his good fielding, that is nice, but the 3Ks still makes me ill. He is not a defensive specialist and striking out does nothing good except for the pitchers stats.

The solution is not obvious, but at this point it might be Harper or Magill. Unless there is a minor league option we cannot drop Hildenberger, we are already short of relievers. However, we cannot make the mistake of relying on him like we did the end of last year. He seems to have a limit to effective innings and is better used less often.

Demote might not be the answer, but after a brief time of excellence he has reverted to a filler. He has not given us the quality we need and past memories are not enough to give him a lot more chances.

Like others on this comment section I wonder why the love affair for Stewart. Is he the best in the minors right now? I know it is a push but I would rather see Graterol begin to experience the bigs - his stuff should play well anywhere. Reading the minor league report on TD I know that Addison Reed is not ready to come up and perform, and DeJong is earning his DFA status. Littell has a better ERA than Stewart, have we given up on him? And Poppen is better than both. Just curious.

Article: Who is the Face of the Minnesota Twins?

Until one emerges it is Astudillo. Not for the long run, but right now he is the player people want to watch. Next year should be someone else. -

I love your starter rant - I am in complete agreement. This year the articles have been about how the bullpens have a poorer performance across MLB. Of course - whether BP or SP you can only throw so many times and it is frequency of use, not length of use that I see as an issue. Bring back Jack Morris rant any time - I will enjoy them.- 52 replies

Article: Longest Tenured Minnesota Twins - 2019
mikelink45 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice article. It made me think about age. Nelson Cruz is out elder statesman born 7/1/80. Then I was surprised that Blake Parker was the second oldest 6/19/85. The rest of the 1980s players are Jason Castro 6/18/87, Kyle Gibson 10/23/87, Michael Pineda 1/18/89, Marwin Gonzales 3/14/89, Ryne Harper 3/27/89, Ehire Adrianza 8/21/89, Trevor May 9/23/89, Matt Magill 10/11/89. Putting this together surprised me - I did not know much about Parker, and I thought Pineda would be older than Gibson. The pitcher who is much older than I expected is Trevor May - he was a prospect for so long the years snuck up on me. Maybe the most difficult thing for an old fan is to see how we are soon going to be without players born in the 80s!- 30 replies

Michael Pineda has a long way to go for me to be a believer, but more than anything I look at the Yankee injuries and the replacements - yes they are primarily replacement players and I wonder why we have to see our minor leaguers come up and suffer through growing pains while the Yankees keep bringing up the "who is he" guys and still win. I know there is no answer, but I am confused.

I really hate lots of strikeouts and having Sano whiff twice in his rehabs bothers me, no matter how far his foul ball was hit.

I have never understood the career path for relievers. I look at the Twins reluctance to bring up relief pitchers from the minors and I am always confused by their desire to pickup strays from other teams before promoting from within. Since BP arms are erratic and go hot and cold during their career I would bring them up young when they are hot and see what works. Since they only pitch one inning at a time they cannot work on a lot and a RP needs only one or two good pitches. A healthy arm seems like the requisite asset. So, instead of playing games with failed SP like Mejia, try out some of these arms in MLB - they are already 24 so the clock is ticking.

Some curses just won't go away. This Yankee team - with a AAA lineup behind two good MLB hitters could still handle us like they always have and even when their good starter goes down. Now Happ - who has not had a good year comes up. Can we wake up and see this is not a dominate team, at this time, and beat them like we beat the Astros? Damn Yankees!

Article: On Slaying Stupid Dynasties
mikelink45 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The famous collapses of the Twins in the playoffs to the Yankees are in the rear view mirror, but maybe Rocco does not know we are supposed to melt when they are our opponents. Lets start a new narrative - The Yankee slayers! -
At this point we have Berrios - excellent Odorizzi - either good or bad and showing some promise to continue the good Pineda - trending downward Gibson - showing hope, but still not where we expect him to be Perez - shocking! This is a decent rotation for a team that is pounding the ball, but not excellent - just above average. Take out Berrios who many do not seem to think is an Ace and we have mediocre or worse. Soon I hope to see new arms starting to push into the rotation - not sure which, but we need at least one good arm to boost us for a real pennant drive.

You mentioned - in passing - something I would suggest that you add - how about the Twins fielder of the month. Let's look at some good gloves to balance out the Cesar's that make this hitting list.

Article: HOU 11, MIN 0: Completely Dominated
mikelink45 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Bring back Baltimore. I believe the HR rate is dropping, but the real concern is not that a very good pitcher stymied the lineup, but rather the trend of Pineda's starts, Magill looking back in consecutive games and Mejia continuing a season where he looks like he should be in AAA. Those three are keys for us going forward unless we have more magic we can use to rescue the BP. I continue to hope Pineda gets this turned around because I know the team is going to give him a long leash. Is Magill doing something different from last year? Who is next for the call up to the pen?- 46 replies

Article: Is Royce Lewis Baseball's Best Prospect?
mikelink45 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I do not have an opinion on this because I do not value that ranking - I am pleased that he is a good prospect. Buxton was our number one and how long has it taken for him to be productive and starting to move towards stardom? What bothers me is that our top two (that ranking I do care about) have not produced. I am very anxious for Kiriloff to be back on the field. After losing one year already we really need to see him stay healthy and hopefully a Twin sometime in 2020. I had hoped that Lewis would be one of those professional teens - we have seen that in DC and Atlanta and other young guys are making their mark now too - like Tatis. But Lewis is not knocking the door down and that is what I would be expecting if he was really the number one prospect for all of MLB. -

This was the most satisfying game of the year for me. Being old school a 1 - 0 game was significant. No late inning collapse, tight games are the ones that lead to championships. The bombs in Baltimore series was fun, but lets build off this one - two good teams playing toe to toe.- 87 replies

This is so fun. But I had to curb some of my enthusiasm when I realize we are 10 - 9 against the rest of the league. We are a good club and we have a chance. But after tomorrow - no more Baltimore this season. So lets say good bye with five more dingers.

The Twins move to drop Cave and go with the three person bench has to be discouraging to players like Wade and others looking for a chance at the big leagues. This is one reason I am happy to have the teams pull up lots of players in September. They all deserve to have a chance. I do hope something changes to create a bench again.
