Duran was moved to the pen as a means to get him to the bigs sooner. It was supposed to be temporary, but the Twins decided they liked him in the role. Duran actually wanted to move back to the rotation. I think he would have done great as a starter with his assortment of plus pitches. Prielipp had no health issues last year as a starter. Like I said, start him until he shows he can't be a starter.

Absolutely not. Signing guys like Giolito and Littell just clogs the path in front of the guys we need to develop.

Report From The Fort: Intentional From The Start
TJSweens replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Awesome man! We used to make that trip every year too. Then we moved down here. Ian aside, life on the beach is great. Sunsets over the gulf never disappoint. Spring training is still special. That's when hope springs eternal. -
Prielipp was healthy last year. He has pretty well been healthy since his UCL surgery. The issue now is simply building his pitch count and stretching him out. Look at the starter, bullpen, AAA series of columns. Prielipp has a more complete arsenal of plus pitches than the immediate candidates for the rotation. Stretch him out. He could make his starting debut by mid season.

This is all subject to spring training when we find out what if any adjustments these pitchers have made and the impact of those adjustments. Leave Abel in the rotation in AAA. He needs refinement. Taj, Festa and Zebby can fight it out for that 5th spot. Due to the WBC, all of them should plenty of run. Depending on ST performances, the two losers can move to the pen or start in AAA. Raya, Morris and Lewis should move to the pen. Leave Prielipp and Rojas as starters in AAA.

I don't think the key with Bradley is fewer fastballs. Secondary pitches tend to be less effective when batters start to see them more and more. The Twins need to adjust his fastball. One of the few things I liked from Falvey was his creating off season pitching camps for prospects. They have camps set up to add velocity and modify spin. I would hope they sent Bradley, Abel, etc. to refine their pitches ahead of spring training.

Yes, this gets overblown. I read numerous accounts that Culpepper's defense greatly exceeded expectations last year and he now looks like a player who could stay there. Somewhere along the line everything reverted back to Culpepper changing positions.

Lee was drafted for his bat and it has not lived up to expectations, so far. He was supposed to have a polished swing with a great approach that was supposed to easily transition to the big leagues. With over 700 plate appearances we have yet to see it. This is a major problem, since Lee needs to hit in order to justify his glove in the lineup. All we can do is hope Culpepper gets off to a fast start and earns a call up.

My guess is that he is going through one of the off-season pitching academies the Twins have for their prospects. He's probably working on modified grips and trying new pitches. Matthews is a good candidate to start the year in the pen. He has nothing more to prove in AAA. The usual uptick in velo that accompanies a move to the pen should make his fastball more effective. The short stints should also make it easier to break in a new pitch or a modified existing pitch. Matthews also has enough innings under his belt to make it easy to stretch him back out if they want another look at him as a starter.
-
Pointless rationalization. Of course you need outcomes from all sources. I credited Falvey for acquiring pitching. My point is when you go outside the organization, you give up assets. And don't give me this development schedule bs. It's been 9 years and the only starter they produced is Bailey Ober, who is a mid rotation guy at best. What teams had the best pipeline in a given year couldn't be more irrelevant. The subject is the Twins pipeline over the last 9 years and it isn't good. That's why we had a fire sale to bring in more pitching prospects, while home grown prospects have stalled.

The heart and soul of a pipeline is scouting, drafting and developing. The Falvey pipeline is a trickle in this area. Ober stands as the lone starting success. You can't count Festa and Matthews as successes as they figure to start the year in AAA behind Abel and Bradley. Griffin Jax is another success as an elite reliever. Sands and Varland are successes to a lesser degree. Personally, I don't see this as a successful pipeline. The Falvey regime has done a decent job of acquiring pitchers that other teams scouted, drafted and started to develop. The problem is that these acquisitions should supplement your in house core, not be the core. The Twins continually move assets to acquire what they fail to draft and develop.

The 5 Best and 5 Worst Moves of the Derek Falvey Era
TJSweens replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Just like I have trouble taking arguments seriously that look at OPS+ in a vacuum and ignore that he can't hit LHP, is a defensive liability and runs like molasses in January. But hey, if you're happy with these drafts, I'm happy for you.- 60 replies

The 5 Best and 5 Worst Moves of the Derek Falvey Era
TJSweens replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
1. Wallner is a slow footed, weak defensive platoon player who strikes out a lot. Larnach, rinse and repeat. I counted Jeffers as a success. 2. Julien is a terrible defender who hit well enough for a couple of months to justify his existence. Career went over a cliff. 3. Sands had one good year and one bad year. Varland is up and down got pounded with the Jays, Jury out on both. 4. Steer is barely a league average hitter even playing in a band box. Sub par defensively. 5. Pitchers in the pipeline are just that. They’ve proven nothing. I remember back when we were supposed to be giddy about Graterol, Balazovic, Alcala, Enlow, Winder, etc in our pitching pipeline. Same goes for Jenkins and the other position players. We all thought Royce was our next superstar. So 9 years of drafts and international signings has yielded a slightly above average catcher, a couple of slow footed platoon players, a mid rotation starter, a high end/high leverage reliever, a couple of questionable mid relievers, a couple of huge question marks (Lewis, Lee), a mediocre second baseman for another team and all star slugger for another team (Rooker). Ratioalize it all you want. That is not a good track record for 9 years.- 60 replies

TJSweens replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Don't sell me Larnach, Jeffers and Cole Sands as examples of our drafts being not that bad. They aren't all going to be All Stars, but how about any All Stars in 9 years? I guess there was Rooker...oh wait. How about a some legit every day players? Falvey was going to create a pitching pipeline like this organization has never seen. His drafts have produced Ober, Jax and Sands in 9 years. You want to polish the giant turd that is 9 years of Falvey drafts, go ahead. I expect more.- 60 replies

The 5 Best and 5 Worst Moves of the Derek Falvey Era
TJSweens replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That might be a compelling argument if I put any stock in the WAR family of stats. I also factor in the importance of a frontline starter. Replace Pablo with Arraez in 23 and the Twins don't make the playoffs, let alone break an 18 game playoff losing streak, let alone win a playoff series.- 60 replies
