  1. Interesting way to look at it. Here’s another interesting approach: if we had made all of these trades minus one—the Varland trade—would we be more likely to declare the deadline fire sale as a WIN? I maintain that the Varland trade was both misguided and unnecessary. The return does not match the upside of Varland. At the high end, he could become the next Joe Ryan in the Twins system. At the low end he’s a #3 in the rotation. I think we could have done better trading the immensely unhappy Ryan for a massive haul.
  2. DREAM ON! He won't be dropped for nothing. We should all jump at the chance to get Spencer Steer back in the Twins org. He hits bombs and is an outstanding 1Bman. When is the last time we had that? Hrbek or Big Papi? He is ARB eligible and won't be a Free Agent until 2029. What's not to like? But I highly doubt that we can work out a package that wouldn't dig deep into our prospects. He'd be expensive. Maybe Larnach plus a prospect.... The Reds have uber prospect Sal Stewart up now (and learning 1B) as well as Sam Basallo at 1B so Steer might be dispensable to the Reds....
  3. There is one and ONLY ONE plan this off-season: Cut Costs!!! True story: when an unprofitable company, no matter how rich the owners are, owes the bank $500 million, something’s gotta give. The banks have been putting immense pressure on the Pohlads to make good on the loan. There is no other way this could have went. Period. They suckered some “investors” to buy some equity in the team to keep the banks from foreclosing on the team. The other problem that the Pohlads have is that a large portion of their family wealth has been in commercial real estate. That industry took an immense hit during Covid and it still has not recovered. Like all real estate investors/managers/owners, they are most likely sitting on a lot of unprofitable inventory. Some large commercial buildings in Minnesota have sold for a fraction (5-10%!) of their pre-COVID value. The Pohlads have been in financial hell for a few years now (hence the $500 million in loans against the Twins and their attempts to sell the team). So while we can dream of competing, it just is not going to happen. With the almost certain strike/lockout in 2027, the Pohlads will be losing $$$ every day (no revenue but continued expenses). They need to put away as much $$ as possible or else the Team will just go bankrupt some time in 2027. They should have already but they chose the alternative: sell off the Team. But, they inanely thought new owners would pay $1.5 Billion for the team while taking on the debt . . . AND at the same time allow baby Joe to still run the team! So these idiots have no choice but to tank the payroll and save as much as possible. I will wave a gracious goodbye to Buck, Lopez and Ryan. Probably 2-3 others like Larnach, Wallner or Jeffers. This will be a AAAA team next year. What the idiot owners don’t seem to understand, is that if the team loses 3 outta 4 games with AAAA skill level, the fans will abandon the Twins. Revenue will tank and there will be little money to sock away. They will wish they had sold the team. They can’t fix this.
  4. OH NO....it IS an indictment of the ownership! I am definitely NOT giving Falvey a pass, he sucks, but Ownership has also heavily contributed to the mess of a team! They are the idiots that ran up $500 million in debt on the team--making it both unsellable and perennially uncompetitive. The inept ownership moves have forced the limited budgets that Falvey has to work with. That said, Falvey has had three strikes against him for some time and is at least half the problem: 1) Poor trading moves have clearly overshadowed his few good trades. 2) Some alarmingly bad free agent signings. 3) Unconscionably horrible strategy for a small-market team.
  5. Actually I am a little disappointed that Miranda didn't pan out with the Twins...he showed promise. I wish him luck elsewhere. On the other hand, how is Julien still in on the 40-man team? Do they think they can turn him around? By his standards, he sucked in AAA. 3 HR all year. Are they keeping him around just in case of a Keashall injury? Don't they have Clemons for that? Or do they plan on Clemons as a full time 1Bman? I can't see them keeping Julien other than as a project and he could be taking up a valuable 40-man position soon.
  6. What Free Agent would want to come to the Twins S### Show? I am sure there are some desperate suckers out there somewhere but I have to believe that any player we would want on the team (meaning they are good) would be able to find a better landing spot.
  7. I agree 100% on Rocco as I’ve said before. Sorry the wording was confusing. Got it now. Again, sorry!
  8. No sorry I should have been far less unkind. We agree fully on both Falvey and Baldelli. What I disagree with is that Smith “got it right” as Twins GM. He did not. As I pointed out, he made far more bad trades than good ones and the damage he did as GM hurt the org for 2-3 years after he left. He never got close to the GM chair again. He was a pure admin guy with little to no baseball skill. I am sure he is a fine administrator. But, as Falvey shows, GMs today have far more responsibility/control/power over how the on-field team is run. I’m not saying Falvey is good at it, but I am saying that Smith had little understanding of baseball-related decisions (strategy, training, team formation, trade asset values, etc). He went on to finish his career in ADMIN. I apologize, I didn’t mean to offend you. I just jumped on Smith.
  9. Yeah...this will substantially improve the value of the Twins franchise....like, REALLY??? Are the Pohlad's really believing the insanity of this plan? Strip out all of the value of the team so it is more attractive to potential buyers? That's your plan? That's how you are going to sell the team for MORE money? OMG the absolute stupidity is frightening!
  10. Are you outta your mind? Lets look at Smith's trades...Santana for Gomez + junk, the Delmon Young trade (that helped Tampa Bay win the WS), the Capps for Ramos trade, the Nishioka signing, trading Hardy)? Smith had three winning seasons (mostly with the team that Ryan had previously built), Then, after all his trading nonsense was fully baked into the team, Smith's Twins went 63/99. His damage to the team was lasting, without another winning season for the next three years after he was fired. Just what went right under Bill Smith? He can take credit for 3 winning seasons with largely the team that his predecessor had built, while he broke it all down. Trading Santana, when he begged to sign a long term deal, was horrible!
  11. OMG!!! How does stripping down the franchise makes it more valuable? Who wants to invest in a loser? Who wants to invest in a rudderless, talent-starved, no-future team? Who wants to invest in a team where the revenue has been decimated by inane leadership driving fans away?!!?!
  12. They chose wrong. Rowson was the guy to get! I just keep wondering....Twins said Rowson interview was amazing...where is he? Still in NY. Dang! Shelton will just be Rocco 2.0. I just don't see a difference between the two. As far as coaches, I like both pitching and batting coaches but I have no idea if Shelton will. Maki has been a great pitching coach, I'm so glad he stepped up. Borgschulte is interesting, but still no traction in hitting just yet. BUT, then look at what Popkins has done in Toronto....so ...just saying...I wonder if there is some other reason that Twin's coaches have such a hard time here in Twins territory? How will that translate to Shelton? Is something/someone tying their hands? Is someone dictating all this crazy **** in Minneapolis, like LH hitters not hitting LH pitching, or forcing players into positions they are not trained for, or concentration on dingers, or positional hitting? I certainly hope that Shelton can stand up to that nonsense and say NFW!!
  13. Well I think they missed a fantastic opportunity in not getting Rowson! But who knows….maybe he turned down an offer? He was the one guy for whom the interview was said to be “very impressive.” Oh well. As for Shelton, I’d agree that he is simply Falvey 2.0. His job was to take a low budget team with a great farm system and build a functioning team. He failed. So did Rocco. But SO DID OWNERSHIP! Now sure the budget was a bit higher, but you can say the same for SEA, CLE, MKE, and many other smallish market teams. Is this all the Head Coach’s fault? Nope. You need a full MLB franchise system, top to bottom, to win. This includes many coaches, Scouts, analysts, instructors, facilities, planners, and conditioning/medical staff. Oh dammit…wait…Twins have been firing many of them too! And the Twins need a winning strategy. I am sure the main reason they picked Shelton is because he bought in to the Falvey strategy. I’m guessing Rowson had some other plans (and impressive ones too!). So, compare to the above-mentioned teams—just how well has the Falvey/Baldelli/Shelton strategy worked? Good luck Twins! Good luck Twins fans! I’ve cancelled my mlb.tv subscription I have to say I am really enjoying the WS. I’m rooting for TO but both teams are playing excellent baseball. I just wish the Twins would learn some things from TO! But I can’t call them cheap—their payroll is $255 million! Whew But I look at the list of payrolls and many low-payroll teams have far better records Sigh!
  14. I agree, the RISP stats SUCK! But is that because he foolishly tries to hit homers every AB or because he’s been groomed to be the big bat guy? Has he been taught to get RISP home no matter how, or has he been coached to always go for the dinger? I’ve seen this in so many Twins players —especially HR guys (Wallner, Royce, Miranda, Julien and even an early Buxton). Seems like they have a team hitting philosophy (coached or imagined) to ALWAYS swing for the fences. It’s easier in MiLB so these guys come up thinking they are gonna rack up homers (Royce). Then oppo pitchers find the holes in their swings and they are toast (Royce, Miranda, Julien etc). Theres a belief that hitting lots of homers brings huge contracts. Sure that’s true if you are Aaron Judge. But how many AK’s are there in MLB? I have to say I LOVE Vlad Jr’s play in the WS!!!! Sure he’ll take an HR swing when it presents itself. But with RISP, he is getting a HIT! And better yet, he is scooping all those errant throws at 1B. He came off the bag to scoop a bad throw —knowing that a runner at 1st is a lot better than a runner at 2nd. He’s one smart player! Well trained, superbly coached.. BRW, notice how TO is piling up mid-game runs with small ball? Keep the line moving. Vlad comes up with guys on and gets a hit. I am sure TO is afraid of the dinger but a hit is another precious run. You look up and they just scored 4 small ball runs! and Vlad is out-Schoei-ing Ohtani!!!
  15. I say Rowson, definitely! Here is the key reason why: he is coming from the NYY where coaches set very high expectations for the players, and give them the tools, training, and coaching they need to achieve these expectations and then hold them accountable. I'd expect that bringing a little bit of that NYY approach to Minnesota would be a good thing!
  16. It's not that hard...just keep coming up to the plate with no runners on and he will not run up the RBI score no matter how many HRs he hits (no one is going to hit 100 HRs). That's most likely a result of 4 things: 1) other batters are not doing their job getting on base in front of Wallner, 2) bad coaching with an emphasis on HR's not getting on base, and 3) bad lineup construction and 4) Wallner swinging for the fences rather than taking an RBI-producing single. Wallner has no ability to affect whether or not he comes up with runners on base. One more thing....yanking him every time a LH pitcher comes into the game is just plain idiotic! I am hoping the new coach helps him learn to hit lefties instead of yanking him in the 4th inning!
  17. Sano Adjusted??? I agree 1000% what you are getting at here (just not the Sano part). The problem is that Falvey and maybe the players know that HR's put butts in seats and money in pockets. So, for a guy like Wallner, with all that power at hand, he's gonna try to maximize his contracts by hitting a lot of dingers. Smart players (e.g., Buxton, Correa) will take HRs when the pitch allows, but knows that getting on base (rather than K) is the real goal. I heard Falvey some years back say something along the lines of how great it would be to hit all these HRs. I think he might have been spoiled by the Bomba squad and has been trying to replicate that since. It is a failed approach but not sure the organization has figured that out yet. If this were my team, I'd make Wallner the full time DH and bring up either Jenkins or ERod or whoever is most ready. There is going to be a lot of learning going on next year....rip off the band-aid and get these players into MLB!
  18. A. Maybe, maybe not. I’d say Ryan is close to a top 10-20 SP, still fairly young, and has been robust—never lost a year to TJ. So you know you are getting a rock solid MLB SP pretty much fully formed. On the other hand, while McLean is in AAA you just never know with any P (other than maybe Skenes). There is always some risk with SPs. Maybe there’s a higher upside than McLean, but maybe not—who knows? McLean is not quite ready for prime time where Ryan is ready for the playoffs now. And I’d expect Ryan still has a little more room to improve even further. B. I like Lee a lot but yeah he’s not our long term answer at SS. But the Twins are not competitive at all, they are in total rebuild mode. They have some options coming up at SS so I wouldn’t trade for a SS yet. The bigger need is at 1B and C. We are rebuilding so do trades that support our needs. SP, RP, 1B and C. And whatever else we trade away this offseason. Forget winning next year. Focus on building, training, instruction, perfection.
  19. Well....I'd much rather take Nolan McLean and Clifford. Why or why do we need another SS? Of CFer?
  20. Hey, WTH? How can you ding Zoilo for a short but spectacular Twins tenure but not ding Carlos for his BRIEF contributions? Zoilo outclassed Carlos by 100%!
  21. The Twins will definitely NOT sign Hoskins. Not because of injuries. Not because of the price. No. The reason why Hoskins won’t sign here is because he’s not stupid. He looks at the Twins and sees a big sign above door #34 that reads “Home of a Major S#%& Show.” Who the heck would sign with the Twins other than AAAA losers hoping to catch a break.
  22. But Kepler was a far better defender…..
  23. Sooo many comments here saying the same thing: trade him if we get good value otherwise he becomes DH. It’s a good plan. But that’s not all we need to do. We need better coaching. He’s got holes in his hitting. He likely needs to refine his swing mechanics, pitch recognition, workout routine and daily game prep. All things his MLB coaches need to help him with. So maybe the Twins have failed Wallner more than Wallner has failed the Twins? Yup, Wallner’s 2025 sucked. But I say our inability to properly coach, train, instruct and use him is the reason why. A couple of examples: not starting him against LH pitching, or subbing him out on the 4th inning when the oppo mgr brings in a LH reliever. If I were Wallner when that happened, I’d be 1. Super angry, 2. Embarrassed, 3. Hurt, and 4, even more super pissed off when I told Rocco “How the F do you expect me to learn if I never get a chance to try????
