  1. March 22nd is the earliest date that a DL stint can retroactively begin. If Swarzak were 60 day DL'd, the soonest he'd be able to return would be May 21st.
  2. No, I don't really believe anything that comes out of St. Peter's mouth. I was trying to make a point to the guy posting ahead of me. However, having actually heard the interview where he said that, I got the impression that he was taken by surprise on that question, and answered it honestly. The reason St. Peter lies is to spin things in favor of the organization. The fact that the Twins lowball FA's is somewhat of an indictment, so I think if he were trying to spin things he would have went a different direction. The biggest evidence, IMO, that this "they don't want to come here" argument is incorrect, is the fact that our biggest name FA signing in recent memory (Willingham) happened to come after one of our worst seasons in recent memory. Willingham came here because we made the best offer. It really is that simple, IMO.
  3. Do you think there is some fundamental reason, outside of the lack of offers given to them by us, that FA's wouldnt want to come here?
  4. I misread your post then, I apologize.
  5. But St. Peter did say, when asked directly if there were any reason a FA didn't want to, or wouldn't want sign here, that it all comes down to dollars and years. Can we just go ahead and take his word for it, since he works within the organization, and we don't?
  6. Right. Like I said, he wasn't very good. However, you said he was the worst you had every seen. He wasn't even the worst in the league last year, so like I said, you don't watch much baseball if he is the worst you have ever seen. Wasn't meaning do be condescending, just pointing out that the numbers do not show someone who was historically bad.
  7. You either are not able to see Plouffe objectively, or you don't watch very much baseball, because the numbers show someone who was not very good defensively, but nowhere near as bad as you describe him.
  8. I doubt he makes it into the HOF. The average HOF SS has 63.1 career WAR, Omar has 40.5. He ranks 43rd all time among SS's on the JAWS scale, which attempts to compare players at the same position across eras. Only one guy below him has ever gotten into the HOF, and there are a ton of guys ahead of him havent gotten in (former players), or most likely won't get in (current players). He ranks behind guys such as Rafael Furcal, Maury Willis, Dave Conception. The only SS behind him who got in was someone called George Wright, who played in the late 1800's for the Redstockings and Grays. Wright managed to get into the HOF with 866 career hits, and 11 career HR's, and an .870 career fld%, so I don't really know what is going on with that guy. Maybe they voted for the wrong guy?
  9. I think its one of those stupid baseball "codes", that you are not supposed to throw inside during ST. Burnett probably retaliated for Worley pitching inside, even if the actual beanball was accidental. Of course, I could be wrong, there are so many of these stupid, archaic, unwritten rules in baseball, its hard to keep track of all of them.
  10. I must be in the minority, but I actually think we will see an improved Plouffe this year, defensively. I don't think he's ever going to be a great 3B, but I think he'll be right around average, defensively. He was playing a new position last year, and as a natural SS, it's not as if he's completely void of defensive skills.
  11. I'm not defending Escobar, I really havent seen enough of either of them, but you don't need elite baserunning speed to be a good SS. JJ Hardy is about as slow as they come on the basepaths, but he is a very good defensive SS. You can make up for the lack of speed with good instincts, good footwork, and being in the right alignment.
  12. Even with the defensive struggles last year, Plouffe still put up a positive WAR, so even last year his bat overcame his defense. Like you say above regarding giving Dozier some time to adjust to his new position, Plouffe was also playing a new position last year. I think he'll be much better there this year. He was brought up as a SS, so its not as if he doesnt have defensive talent. He came into last year preparing and expecting to play the OF, then was moved to a position he'd only played a handful of times since 2008 (and didnt play a lot of 3B even before then).
  13. Adams ceiling is probably as a poor mans Jamey Carroll. To this point he hasnt developed as much as the Yankees had expected. Supposedly his defense is adequate, he makes the fundamental plays, but doesnt have strong range or a strong arm. He can work an AB, and take a walk, though its suspect if that will translate to the majors, since he doesn't have much power to speak of. He doesnt have much speed, but is said to be a smart baserunner, not a threat to steal a base, but won't make dumb outs. He's a fringe prospect, who more than likely will never see more than a cup of coffee in the majors, but I see a guy who was once SOMEWHAT well regarded. Who knows, he could be a late bloomer like Carroll and carve out a decent career as a utility infielder.
  14. I'd shoot a little higher than Nolin if I were dealing with the Jays. Sure, Sickels has him 4th in their farm system (which is higher than most), but the Jays system is pretty gutted after the Reyes and Dickey trades, they only have 2 top 100 worthy prospects, and I'd hold out for one of those (Sanchez and Osuna). The Jays have shown this year that they don't mind giving up top prospects to win now, so I'd hope Morneau gets off to a hot start, then play hardball for Osuna (they probably wouldn't trade Sanchez).
  15. FWIW, Bill James is projecting a 3.63 ERA, of course I'm sure that would go up a bit now that he's moving into a hitters park.
  16. He would have to be DL'd or optioned to be able to pitch in a minor league game once the season starts. I think he could, however, stay back at extended ST and pitch a simulated game.
  17. All individual stats counted, none of the team stats counted.
  18. BBR has a stat in its ST line called OppQual, which measures the quality of pitcher a hitter is facing (and vice versa). Escobar has an 8.5 this spring(8 is AAA, 10 is MLB), while Dozier has an 8.7, so they have both faced roughly the same quality of pitchers. Dozier has 9 singles, 4 doubles and 2 HR in 54 AB's, while Escobar has 15 singles, and 3 doubles in 52 AB's.
  19. Back then, a tie game was replayed, and did not count in the standings. It did however count towards individual statistics. Ron Santo and Billy Williams also played in 164 games, in 1965, because of this same rule.
  20. That is exactly my point!! We are not competing. I understand that the GM might not want to come right out and say we are rebuilding, as it may hurt ticket sales with casual fans, but then don't say anything. To hint that he's insulted someone would suggest we are not going to be competitive is disrespectful to the customer, IMO. And to address the point that doesnt really need to be addressed, since I was being sarcastic in my previous post: The players go wherever the money is. That is it. I laugh when I hear that FA's don't want to come here. No, they don't come here because we rarely make a legit offer on one. We made a legit offer to Willingham, and BAM, what do you know, he came here. He came to a cold, frigid city, in the Midwest, a 90 loss team. Why? Because we gave him the best offer.
  21. Lets just agree to disagree. I'm not going to change my mind and neither are you. We have philosophical differences of opinion. I'm a believer in keeping your word, no matter what, no matter the consequences. You're a believer in $$$ is the bottom line, no matter what, no matter the consequences. Which is fine. I have a hard time believing the recession is hurting the MLB too bad, considering the record contracts they've been giving to players the last 5 years.
  22. Not only this^^^, but I grow tired of the, "of course we lost, the Yankees were better, the Yankees spend more money, etc." argument, considering that the Yankees only won the world series one time in all those years that they swept us. NEWSFLASH: The "best team" on paper, or the most expensive team doesnt HAVE to win. Go out and be the Rangers, or the Rays and beat them anyway. It's not like they didn't have plenty of chances.
  23. But that is because you are realistic and know that this team is rebuilding. Apparently, the GM thinks we are competing this year, at least he is looking Morneau, and Mauer, and Willingham, and Perkins in the eye and telling them that we are. A GM that truly thinks we will be a competitive team certainly could find a few extra wins with $40 million to spend, a few extra wins that can put a competitive team over the top.
  24. I think the Dodgers win it but narrowly, edging the Giants by <3 games. The Cards will win the Central. Their SP is pretty deep, and they will find a way to make room for Taveras by June. I can't see the Braves running down the Nats. But the Braves will earn a WC berth. Disagree. The Angels will battle the Tigers for the best record in the AL, they are just too loaded. The worst division winner will come out of the NL Central (Cards). Agree. The Yanks will duel the O's and Sox for last place. Girardi and Cashman both fired. I think the White Sox will push them, at times, but at the end the Tigers win comfortably. I agree, and it will be the Mariners. Agreed. He'll be even better this year. My projections: .329/.410/.589, 33HR, 56SB Close, but no cigar. Twins win 67 games, leaving Gardy at 999 wins. Whether Gardy gets fired or not depends on his loyalty to Rick Anderson, as Anderson gets the axe, I'm not sure if Gardy would take a, "if he goes, I go" stand or not. You will nail 5 of them.
