  1. If you are saying what I think you are saying (Carroll should be in the lineup and Florimon should be on the bench), then I am with you!
  2. You can click the link for updates on Morneau and Deduno. I wanted to be careful not to steal too much info from the link, per the posting rules.
  3. Not to nitpick, but Burnett is exactly at replacement level (fangraphs) or slightly above (BBR).
  4. Updates on De Vries and Hendriks, courtesy of LENIII, http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/200725991.html De Vries feels fine today, still on track to start next Saturday. Hendriks will pitch in a minor league game tomorrow and should be good to go on Friday.
  5. But you shouldnt need a 3rd catcher in order to keep both Mauer and Doumit fresh. If Doumit's primary position were 1B or RF or something, I could see your point. But Doumits primary position (DH) already has him sitting on the bench for 17/18ths of the game. He should be plenty rested when the days come that he needs to catch.
  6. I agree. Catcher defense is tough to put a value on. However, the 2 primary areas that defensive WAR looks at for catcher, as you point out, are baserunning and passed balls, which are Butera's biggest strengths. Based on that, IMO, WAR gives Butera the benefit of the doubt. If anything, his actual value is even less than his WAR would suggest.
  7. Slama has a grand total of 7 MLB innings pitched. That is far too small of a sample size to glean anything from.
  8. Thanks for clarifying that, but I disagree. The backup that would see the most playing time in your scenario would be Mastrionni, who I consider a significant upgrade over Butera.
  9. If it makes you feel any better I'm switching to Apple when my contract is up in June.
  10. It's 5 years for guys 18 and under when signed, and 4 years for guys 19+ when signed.
  11. Mauer and Doumit are going to be in the lineup at the same time whether Butera is up or not.
  12. Sorry, can you give me an example of what you mean with the bolded part. I'm sure its just me, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what you mean by this.
  13. No, that's not what I'm saying at all. I don't know how I can be much clearer about it, so I'll try just repeating what I said a few posts ago, which was something along the lines of: It's probably nothing, but to me it raises at least a little bit of a red flag, at least enough that it can't be completely dismissed. I don't understand why statements made on this site are assumed to be meant as one extreme or another. If I make a statement as simple as, "I have no problem with Butera, but I certainly don't see how its any big loss if we were to lose him.", people take that to mean that I hate Butera, and think he doesn't belong on the roster. If I make a statement as simple as, "The fact that Phillies were willing to give up on him so soon, makes me wonder IF there could be something they saw that leads them to believe he isn't going to work out.", it gets taken as if I'm saying, "The fact that the Phillies traded a young pitcher MUST mean that they know he's going to be terrible." Huge difference between me thinking it COULD be a small red flag, and thinking it absolutely means something.
  14. Yeah, this won't be another Balfour situation. Balfour had a very good K rate, and a very unlucky HR/FB rate when he was here. It wouldn't have taken too deep of digging to see that he was likely going to be a useful arm out of the pen. With Burnett, there really isnt anything in his secondary numbers that suggest he is eventually going to be a solid BP arm. In fact the secondary numbers go the other way with Burnett, showing a guy who was pretty lucky to put up the mediocre numbers that he sometimes did.
  15. No, the biggest difference, is that unless you have someone qualified to bat #2, you are giving a poor hitter an extra 150 PA's over the course of the season. Those who want Mauer in the 2 hole aren't so much concerned with which order the guys in front of him are hitting, we are concerned with giving those 150 extra PA's to your better hitters, as opposed to someone who should be hitting 8th or 9th. And Mauer has an OPS 14 points higher in the 2 hole than he does in the 3 hole, so I'm not sure what you mean when you say it hasnt worked well.
  16. With my Android phone, the default for me is the full skin.
  17. Sure, Gardy could find another job if he wanted one. He's not a bad manager. But I also have no problem with the people who think he should be let go. Like cmathewson said, the question of 'good/bad manager' in a vacuum is not the only reason managers or coaches get fired.
  18. Yes, all prospects, by themselves, are longshots. But, its a numbers game. Just like there is no way that all of them will pan out, there is also no way that all of them will fail. IMO, we have about 16 or 17 guys in our system right now that have the upside to be either every day lineup guys, starting rotation pitchers, or solid BP arms. Even if less than 1/3 of these guys pan out, that should be 4 or 5 solid big leaguers who are costing the minimum, that should be a good start to build around.
  19. Fair enough, I'm willing to retract my "mileage" statement.
  20. 1) No, Gomez has been worth about 9 runs above average/year, defensively. Not sure where this 80 runs number is coming from. 2) Sure, his bat itself is nothing special, but extra bases via SB have value too. When you adjust his OPS for sb's (minus cs), it puts him in the adequate range. 3) I'd be pretty happy with a .750 OPS from Hicks. I'm putting him somewhere in the .720 to .730 range.
  21. They play less games in college and in the minors (per season) than they do in the majors.
  22. I agree with all of that. Losing Burnett is no big loss, but neither would be losing Butera. That is all I said, some people are making that statement out to be more than it is. And Butera is never coming up "for a few days". Once he comes up, he stays. That is not speculation, there is evidence of that.
  23. I made neither claim. I said that it's no big loss if someone were to claim him, NEVER said he didn't belong. I said Hermann could come up in an emergency, and not be any worse, never said he was better right now.
  24. That's because he was still playing out Brewster's schedule. Who are the nonconference opponents this year? UNLV (2-11), New Mexico St.(1-11), San Jose St.(5-7), Western Illinois(3-7). 4 cupcakes. What about 2014: Eastern Illinois, Middle Tennessee St., New Mexico St., San Jose St. 2015: South Dakota St., Colorado St., Kent St., Ohio. Next 3 seasons, 12 cupcakes. Whether its about bowl games or not, he's scheduling cupcakes to pad his W total.
