  1. For the record, I wasnt intending to "flame" Butera. All I said was, why are we so concerned about losing him? And was then bombarded by people telling me how great he is, and how our organization couldn't handle losing a player like him.
  2. I'm not saying I have a problem with him being in the organization, I think some might be misinterpreting my attitude about him. I'm simply saying it's no big loss if a team were to claim him.
  3. I'm not the one making the claim that Butera is great at working with pitchers, why do I have to do the research? Typically the burden of proof is on the person making the claim. There are far too many variables to suggest that pitcher ERA is an accurate reflection of a catchers ability.
  4. Butera was shown to be a negative value catcher at framing pitches.
  5. Pedestrian, sure. But also 140 points of OPS better than Butera's AA numbers.
  6. But that is the problem. You are trying to get someone to say he can be a good hitter, or a good catcher. He doesn't need to be either, to be an insurance policy if Mauer or Doumit get hurt. Again, Drew Butera is a negative WAR player. Hermann would only need to be replacement level to be a fairly big upgrade over Butera. And I'm not saying he even needs to be an upgrade, which lowers the standards significantly. All he needs to do is "not be any worse" than Butera, which is not a very high standard. By definition, Hermann is pretty much a replacement level player.
  7. The option had nothing to do with it. They had to remove someone from the 40 man roster, options have nothing to do with that.
  8. LOL, the mythical legend of ol' Drew, working miracles with pitchers. Just seeing Drew behind that mask is enough to inspire confidence in any pitcher on the mound. No, but seriously, do you have any data to back up this claim that Butera is some greek god at "working with pitchers"? Because WAR takes both offense and defense (and baserunning) into account, and Butera is a negative WAR player.
  9. That tips the scales even further in the Giants favor, because it means Posey has less miles on his knees than Mauer did.
  10. Part 1: As long as he is in AAA he is just one phone call away from hurting the club. And I think we've all seen that once Gardy gets him on that bench, he remembers how much he likes him, and he never goes back down. Part 2: Burnett isn't good either, but he's marginally better than Butera. Butera is a negative WAR player, Burnett is exactly WAR neutral. While lose Burnett is a okay with me, I'm just saying if I were making a list of players that I'd give the boot to, Butera would be a notch or 2 higher than Burnett, although they'd both be on the list.
  11. I think "stupid" and "horrible" might be just a tad too strong of words for losing a replacement level middle reliever.
  12. Or maybe (and this is a wild and crazy thought), just a tiny bit of the responsibility falls on the player? No nevermind, what was I thinking. Couldn't possibly be the player's fault that he didnt achieve his potential. Much like JaMarcus Russell, and Todd Marinovich, it was the coaching staff and FO that ruined him.
  13. You can debate who the better catcher is, but it's close enough that for the Giants to lock up Posey for $5 million less per year than Mauer is a steal, comparatively speaking.
  14. Considering De Vries left todays game with a forearm injury, I'll say PJ Walters is first up.
  15. Again, Butera is WORSE than replacement level. If Doumit or Mauer got hurt, Chris Hermann could come up and catch once every 4 days. He couldnt be much worse than Butera.
  16. I guess I can't understand what would make you think they will do that, considering they didnt do that last time they had a competitive team, and it was VERY clear that they needed one or two more pieces to make a WS run. And I'll send Gardy a Christmas card if he finds a way to win 78 games with this roster.
  17. But are they actually saving their bullets, or just pocketing them? That would be my question. Are we going to see them go $20 million OVER budget when the time comes to compete, or are they just going to max out AT budget? Because if they just max out at budget when that time comes, then they didn't really save their bullets for anything, they just pocketed them. Also, if this is giving us a "competitive" team for 2013, I'd hate to see what they consider a non competitive team. IMO, the only thing we will be competing with is the Marlins, Astros, and Rockies for the #1 draft pick next June.
  18. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. We both feel pretty strongly on it, so at this point continuing to debate it would be as pointless as debating religion. The first time that Kill schedules a non conference schedule that isnt 4 cupcakes, I'll be the first one in here to admit I was wrong.
  19. I hear what you are saying, but guys who have already made 60 big league starts are a little different than prospects or draft picks. In a case like this, there is no way that your scouts can know as much as their scouts, given that they get to see what he does in BP sessions, what kind of person he is, how dedicated he is, all that stuff.
  20. I wish him luck. For some reason I always liked him, despite the frustration with him. He was a WAR neutral player in his time at the MLB level, though perhaps he does have some potential. At the end of the day I would have much rather seen Butera go, but losing a replacement level player is never going to be a huge mistake.
  21. Ben Revere's defense was worth 14.9 runs above average last year, so I'd say his range MORE than makes up for his arm. Arm strength for an OF'er is pretty overrated IMO. On the scarce occasion that his arm came into play, it costs you 1 base, at worst. When he tracks one down deep in the gap it saves you at least 2 bases, plus 1 or more runs if there are runners on base. People tend not to notice range as often as they do arm strength, because its usually pretty obvious when a guy takes the extra base on his arm, but its not so obvious when he makes a seemingly routine catch that an average OF'er wouldnt have gotten to.
  22. My question would be, why exactly are we concerned about losing some of these players? Drew Butera is a career negative WAR player. Losing a player like that is not a significant loss, IMO.
  23. I have faith that Scoscia is smart enought not to put a stop sign up on one of Trouts best tools. I think Trout steals ~50 bases again this season. He's just too damn good at it to tell him to stop. Those extra bases are very valuable.
  24. Only if you think that 1 K over 5 innings is a good start. Sometimes guys don't pitch well and things work out okay in the runs category. Sure, getting lucky might help you win that day, but over the course of a season, it's not a recipe for success.
  25. So you claim they paid $800,000 for UNC to go away, but are replacing them with, "equal level of competition". A) That's not true, and If it is true, that makes it even MORE rippable. That moves it from a "poorly spent" 800k, to a "complete waste" of 800k. I mean, that makes me ask, once again, WHY? If Kill honestly thinks the team he is going to replace them with is equal competition, then why the hell does it matter which conference the team is from? No, the Gophers have not won at the same rate as the Twins, unless you are counting the complete joke of a nonconference schedule. Get back to me when the Twins get to play 33% of their schedule against AAA teams, because that is basically the difference in competition between a Big Ten team, and these cupcake nonconference games they played last year. Finally, I'm not ripping Kill because he hasnt won yet. I'm ripping him because I don't believe that he is aiming high enough with the program. It seems very obvious to me that his goal is to go 4-0 in non conference, so that he only has to win 2 games to make a meaningless bowl game. That is a losers mentality. We disagree on his motivations, but the thing is, actions speak louder than words. You are believing his words, I'll believe his actions. When the Twins pay the Orioles, Rays, and Rangers to go away, and replace them with AAA or Indy league teams, then I'll rip them for exactly the same thing.
