  1. He commited the cardinal sin of hitting a HR yesterday, that is an automatic day riding the pine for a young player under Gardy. (I exaggerate for effect, since I've learned this will be taken literally if I don't point it out. (And it will STILL probably be assumed as a literal statement, watch)).
  2. Is he stretched out enough to go 6+? I havent really followed his pitch counts too closely this spring so I'm not sure.
  3. Can't some of that be found out by looking at a player's body of work, and stats from last year, or previous years? Is it really necessary to wipe the slate clean every April, so you can "find out what you have"? I know I am taking it to the extreme, but maybe we should have brought Butera north, and made him our starting C, with Joe the backup, so that we can get Butera some critical AB's and find out if we can rely on his bat or not this year? Robertson had his chance to "show what he can do" last year, and it wasnt pretty.
  4. That is why I used a large sample size. If this is going to be the argument, then the same thing could be said regarding comparisons between any two players in baseball, regarding any stat or set of stats. So, we can either trust that over a large sample size, most of those variables are going to (somewhat) even out, or we can just never use any stats whatsoever. I am a mega Mauer fan, he's a HOF player, and a top 25 player in baseball today, but I get the feeling there is just a bit of homerism in this thread. I'm seeing a lot of excuses why we should "throw out" the numbers that are not so flattering when it comes to Mauer, but I'm guessing there wouldnt be the same sentiment if we wanted to "throw out" the positive numbers that support him.
  5. Mastro should be on the DL if he can't play 9 innings. Interesting to see Parmalee get the day off, is he banged up or something?
  6. Again, you don't have to use Perkins for multiple innings there. Let Perk get you out of that high leverage jam, and if he does, you can bring someone else out for the lower leverage situation starting the 9th with nobody on base.
  7. Why does this matter? Gardy has gone out of his way multiple times over the years to point out that regardless of what the catcher puts down, it's the pitcher who has final say. Shake him off until he puts down the slider.
  8. I would hope everyone knows that! I've not once brought up errors or fielding percentage.
  9. Also, i'd like to point out, that if this is going to be our attitude regarding defensive metrics, then you are basically telling me that there are no bad defensive players in baseball. I don't buy that.
  10. Even if that is the case, that is my point! The org and the media are saying he IS good defensively, that is not an opinion, that is being stated like a fact. All off season I heard things like, "Florimon won't hit much, but he is a great defender...", etc. Those are not stated like opinions, so AGAIN I ask, show me one single metric, one single scouting report that supports this idea. And I don't mean a scouting report saying he has the tools to be good, or can be good, or should be good, or will be good. I mean something, ANYTHING, that shows he is good defensively, right now, based on what he has actually done.
  11. Either Gladden was lying, or Bruno doesnt know how to use pitch f/x. Here is the K looking vs. verlander (3rd inning): (pitch #5, right down the middle) http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/numlocation.php?pitchSel=434378&game=gid_2013_04_01_detmlb_minmlb_1/&batterX=24&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3 Here is his 3rd inning called K vs Sanchez: http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/numlocation.php?pitchSel=434671&game=gid_2013_04_03_detmlb_minmlb_1/&batterX=23&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3 Here is the 3rd inning K against Porcello, this one is outside of the zone: http://www.brooksbaseball.net/pfxVB/numlocation.php?pitchSel=519144&game=gid_2013_04_04_detmlb_minmlb_1/&batterX=23&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3 The rest of Hicks K's have come swinging. So, 2 of the 3 looking K's were strikes (both pretty much right down the middle), and the 3rd was outside the zone by about 2 inches.
  12. Being that we see every Twins game, I don't understand what you are disputing then? Mauer is no longer very good back there, his throws are all over the place and he gets lazy on balls in the dirt (see Roenicke's passed ball the other day).
  13. I was kinda hoping Hicks would get a chance to watch a game from the bench today. Dude is pressing big time, and sometimes it takes a day of sitting in the dugout and watching to settle down a bit.
  14. While I agree that sometimes things happen so fast, and there isnt always time to get your best guy warmed up, there was plenty of time in this specific instance.
  15. I never claimed Florimon doesn't have the tools to be a good defender. But tools don't mean jack if you don't use them. Stop telling me why he CAN be good, or why he SHOULD be good, and tell me what data shows that he IS good, defensively, as the Twins org. and many media members claim. Again, there is a HUGE difference between having the tools, and actually being good. Because regardless of how full Pedro's toolbox is, through the sample size we have so far, he has been a downright terrible defender.
  16. He doesn't even necessarily need to get 5 outs. If he gets out of that situation in the 8th, someone else can come into a lower leverage situation in the 9th.
  17. Or you could just put your best reliever (Perkins) in the highest leverage situation, instead of "saving" him for a situation which may never (and didn't) come. The idiotic "save" stat has turned knowledgeable baseball minds into mindless slaves when it comes to late inning BP decisions.
  18. Mauer has thrown out 59 of his last 252 stolen base attempts, Posey has thrown out 78 of 232. Posey's passed ball rate is also nearly half that of Mauer's. Luckily we live in an age where the stats are easily accessible and don't have to rely on the "eye test" of stubborn old baseball writers any more. If Posey is not an elite defensive catcher, then I don't know if any are.
  19. Based on what??? Last year, among SS's with at least 350 innings, Florimon was 29th out of 38 in UZR/150. He was 4 spots BELOW Brian Dozier, who was so bad they moved him to a different position. I know it's a fairly small sample size, but so far it's all we have to look at. Again, I ask, where does this myth come from? He has done nothing to show this "good defense" that he supposedly possesses. Just having the tools does not make you a good fielder.
  20. I really don't understand where this myth that Florimon is good defensively came from. It's not just this year, it's the same problems we saw last year from him. Through his limited time in the MLB so far (407 innings), he's been among THE worst fielding SS's in baseball.
  21. If Tyler Robertson, of all people, is THE GUY on the roster whose job it is to come into perhaps the highest leverage situation possible, then Terry Ryan needs to be fired.
  22. Most of that difference was from batting. His def+pos in 2011 was 10.4 RAA His def+pos in 2012 was 11.6 RAA His batting+baserunning in 2011: negative 9.8 RAA batting +baserunning in 2012: negative 0.6 RAA So he only lost 1.2 RAA defensively, while gaining 9.2 RAA offensively.
  23. I think you misunderstood the point he was trying to make about K rates. (I think) his point is that you CAN get a hit on a groundball, you can never get a hit on a K.
  24. I don't think those expectations are low at all. A CF who can OPS .760 while giving you elite defense has a lot of value.
  25. I don't see how trying to define 'x' does that at all.
