  1. I dont know how many times I have to say that it has NOTHING to do with the money. If we decide we still need him, we could re sign him for MORE than $2 million! Money means almost nothing when you are sitting $30 million under budget. I agree with EVERYTHING you said, except with the following caveat: Why GUARANTEE his roster spot if you dont have to? There is zero reason why everything you wrote cannot still apply, but without guaranteeing the roster spot.
  2. The problem with this is that its not as easy as that to just throw the pitch you want to throw. In general, HR hitters are "mistake hitters". Just because a pitcher is trying to "pitch him better", that doesnt mean he's going to, not that easy. Also, it doesnt concern me if his HR's are dead pull. So are Willinghams, so were Thome's, it doesnt really matter. There are plenty of #3 through #5 pitchers in the league who are always going to leave one over the inner half, no matter how hard they try not to.
  3. Wow. The Miracle on Ice is near the top, or at the top of every single list of greatest sports moments in history. For someone to think that the DR winning the WBC is even close to that level is pretty short sighted, IMO.
  4. 1) I never said he shouldnt come back in 2014. I'm just saying it doesnt do any good to guarantee it. If things happen to work out in a way that Carroll is the best option, you can still re sign him to a 1 year deal. 2) Limiting him to under 400 PA is not shady. Teams do it all the time, and I've never read or heard of any long term "ill will" towards these clubs because of it. The player and agent know that this is a possibility when they sign the deal. 3) I agree that Carroll is a steal for that kind of money, but for the 3rd or 4th time, for me it has NOTHING to do with the money, its the guaranteed roster spot. There is just no good reason for a rebuilding team to guarantee a guy that age a roster spot, if they dont have to, especially when they could still re sign him if they decide to keep him around.
  5. Did you not see the part where I stated that it has NOTHING to do with the money?
  6. No I didnt mean to address the Hendriks v. Deduno aspect of it. I misread his original statement, I didnt realize that was what he was getting at. I like Hendriks over Deduno. I dont view Deduno as a legit long term starter (sorry, I dont!! I know everyone loves him right now!), and I think Hendriks could be. That said, give Deduno his shot, its not like we are loaded with better options right now, but give both of them a spot.
  7. Exactly. This guy is from the DR, there are tons of better baseball players for those youngsters to look up to, other than Sam Deduno. Its not like he's from Belguim or France, or somewhere where he is THE guy who has made it to the MLB.
  8. Why do you "have" to give him at bats? Is there some kind of glory to winning 72 games instead of only 70? And no, the union cant do anything about it. Its not like they are putting him on the DL when he's really not hurt or something shady like that. The team can fill out the lineup any way they choose, its not up to the player or the agent. Teams do this all the time with vesting players. The agents and player may not like it, but they know its the business and know there is nothing they can do about it.
  9. Its not about the money, and its not about Carroll. He's a quality player for what he is. Its about this team getting younger, and having guys coming through the system that will needed to be added to the 40 man, etc. I'm not even saying they wouldnt like to bring him back for 2014, I just think they want to have the option, not be binded to it. You never know how prospects are going to develop this year, you dont know what kind of trade offers you are going to get, you dont know which pending FA's from other teams might play well and start to become attractive, etc. There is just a ton of unpredictable things that will happen between now and December, you would like to be able to have that option of having a spot on the roster open if someone younger is ready for it. And, there is nothing to lose. If nobody is ready, and no FA's or trade options are attractive to the team, they can still bring him back on a 1 year deal.
  10. I think the point is that if Deduno is too erratic to efficiently complete 6+ innings every 5 days, you really have no choice. Its not fair on the bullpen to keep running a guy out that cant get through 4 or 5 innings, even if he's pitching fairly well.
  11. I think TR will make it clear to Gardy that Carroll is not to go over 400 PA's unless we are somehow in the playoff hunt late in the season. And, I think he will make it clear to him that he is not asking, he is telling, and I think he would fire him if Gardy ignores that demand. I would have never thought that TR would fire Gardy, but there has been some very noticeable tension between the two the last few months.
  12. Why are we only counting Cahills first 3 years? The point was that the A's are good at finding at developing pitching in the later rounds. Where a guy pitches 4 or more years down the road doesnt change the fact that he was drafted and developed by the A's. Or could it be that is the line at which Blackburn's predictable regression to what he really was all along began, so you didnt want to include year 4?
  13. I dont think his 24 HR's will be a career high, assuming he has a healthy career and is productive enough to stay in the lineup. I think his power is legit and still developing, I can see him having comparable power as Willingham as he plays through his prime.
  14. You are eliminating Cahill, why? He has put up 10 WAR over 4 seasons. He's a solid starter, not comparable to Blackburn at all.
  15. I wasnt talking about positive WAR for a season, or part of a season.
  16. I'm not saying he's a washed up piece of crap. I'm saying lets actually see him get some real (ST and/or WBC do not count) MLB AB's, before we start making declarative statements about how he will hit. He could be the best RH bench bat we've had in a while, or he could be a right handed Clete Thomas, minus any defensive or baserunning value. Neither would shock me more than the other.
  17. they are not going to let Carroll go over 400 PA's this year, I can almost guarantee that.
  18. I'm not saying they hit HR's with those picks, but they at least get some value out of them. Dallas Braden gave them 4.5 wins above replacement from the 24th round, and would have given them more if not for injuries. A.J. Griffin was a 13th rounder Dan Straily was a 24th rounder Trevor Cahill was a 2nd rounder Dan Haren was a 2nd rounder Rich Harden was a 13th rounder Now how many starting pitchers have the Twins drafted outside of the first round over the last several years that have given them any value?
  19. The guy has never had a MLB at bat. What would you think if I were to say, "It's safe to say that Sano is going to be the best power hitter we've had in decades."?
  20. If Deduno does make the roster, it might not be a bad idea to start him opening day. Guys come into that first game of the season chomping at the bit to swing the bat in a real game, so might as well throw out the guy who's a little wild.
  21. I would disagree, but only because KWill is younger, and he's also at a position where older guys can still play at a high level. Obviously that hasnt been the case the last couple years, but the Vikings must feel that he has enough in the tank that he COULD live up to his salary this year, whereas they must feel that Winfield is at a point where 100% of expectation would still not be enough to justify the salary. I wouldnt be surprised if Winfield sees the offers that he's getting in FA (I think he's going to be surprised at how little he's offered), and ends up resigning with the Vikings anyways.
  22. And yet there are people out there who say that unions are outdated and unnecessary. Isnt it great how a corporation can just vote to do away with a benefit that people were promised when they were hired.
  23. I dont think its a farce. I think they REALLY hoped Hicks would do well enough to get the job, as that makes it easier. But if Hicks completely fell on his face, I dont think they would have hesitated to send him down, like they have with Gibson. You can find a 4th of'er who cant hit or do anything else besides play competent CF. They are not very good, but if all you need is one to hold down the job until one of those 2 is ready, they can be found.
  24. Makes me wonder about Rick Anderson a little bit when Perkins says that nobody has ever told him to throw the opposite of what the hitter is expecting.
  25. Fine, then Parm at DH and Justin at 1B.
