  1. Did you even read the article? Worley himself states that his weight screws with his mechanics when its not under control. That was the ENTIRE point of my argument. I could care less what kind of shape a guy is in if its not negatively affecting his performance. My problem was him admitting that it hurts his performance, then shrugging it off with the comment, "but, nothing I can do about that." It was much more his attitude that I have a problem with than any weight issue.
  2. The MLBPA would never allow that.
  3. Yeah but the difference is all those other 30+ year old guys are on their way out, not on their way in. Could Collabello have a role on a rebuilding/rebuilt team? Well sure, I guess he COULD. The same way that Drew Butera COULD (and does!!). But that doesnt mean he SHOULD.
  4. I guess I'm not as sure as you are that he can hit. With his age, and as many career minor league PA's as he has under his belt, I would think he could have put up much more dominant AA numbers if he really could hit at the type of MLB level that you want from strictly a DH/PH option. Put it this way: Who are you trusting to hit MLB pitching, RIGHT NOW, Chris Collabello, or Jim Thome, even at this age? I'm betting on Thome 10 times out of 10, even at this age. So if that is all you want, is a PH/occasional DH, why not just pony up the $1million and grab Thome for that role? If the reason is you dont want to take AB's from younger guys who have a future on this team, great, I can buy that and agree. But if the reason is you'd rather give those AB's to Chris Collabello, well to me the only explanation for that is they want to save $600k, which is pretty dang pathetic given how far they've already slashed payroll. Obviously this boat has sunk, due to Arcia's ST injury, but I think they could have gotten him 450+ PA's on the big club. Arcia could start in RF, move Parmalee to 1B, move Justin to DH. Doumit becomes the backup catcher and the thump off your bench. I know Doumit might feel slighted by this since we signed him to play, but I'd just tell him thats how it goes on a rebuilding team sometimes.
  5. I cant speak for anyone else, but for me it goes like this: If you are truly cutting payroll drastically because you are rebuilding, then give the roster spot to someone who has a chance to be part of that rebuild. If you are not rebuilding, then use some of that money to go out and sign someone who will actually be an above replacement level player. Yes, if we are just going to throw the roster spot away on someone who is not part of the rebuild then I would rather have it be Jim Thome, the future first ballot HOF'er who has proven he can hit MLB pitching, rather than the 29 year old career minor leaguer who has not. Or does someone in here actually think we've found a future starting first baseman here in Collabello?
  6. Missed the smiley the first time, browser must have been F'd or something.
  7. LOL, tbh I'm not at that age yet. That's not how they do it? Are you telling me the movies have lied to me?
  8. Look man, its fine to disagree on this issue without being insulting to the people you are disagreeing with. It's not like I'm telling you the world is flat here. Both sides are arguing a matter of opinion, not fact.
  9. So if someone is popular, and its said that they "have many friends", are you going to quibble with them because the number of friends they actually have is less than 10% of the world population? Geez, man. Its a significant amount. Its not like its .9%. If 1 in every 10 guys he's facing is 20 years old, I'd say thats going to be quite a boost to your numbers, as a 28 year old first baseman. Look, I dont mean to beat up on what, by all accounts is a harworking guy with a good attitude. I'm just saying that he was pretty old for the league, and still put up pedestrian numbers, considering the position he plays. With the exception of the Miami Marlins (who should be embarrassed as an orginazation), name 1 other team in baseball who would bring this guy north? I appreciate his work ethic, and his desire, and his love of the game. There are many pro athletes gliding by on talent alone who could learn something from this guy, and I respect that. But if I want a feel good story, I'll pop in The Mighty Ducks, or I'll watch the Olympics. For me, there are plenty of outlets for feel good stories, I dont need them in professional athletics. If they truly think he's one of the 25 best guys on the team, then fine, bring him north, I'll root for him if he's on the team. But if they are only basing it on the tiny sample size of ST and the WBC, or if they are only doing it because they want a feel good story, then I'm sorry, to me that is a novelty, better left to the Bill Veeck's and PT Barnum's of the world. Just my 2cents.
  10. No, thats not how I meant it ben. Just saying I'm glad people feel that way, because then I get him in my drafts. I find it interesting that you dont have the same concerns with King Felix though, what with the elbow issues he's been having. As for Price, he's my pick to win AL Cy Young, so far be it for me to knock him in any way. Its just that when I'm drafting for fantasy I'm going upside whenever its close. I could see Stras easily putting up similar rate numbers as all the rest of the top pitchers, while completely blowing them out of the water in K's, which means I can round out my staff in the later rounds with the low K, groundball machines that tend to be undervalued, if I so choose.
  11. Didnt Joe Maddon once let a fan pick the lineup back in '11 or so?
  12. JT Chargois will probably start the season in CR as well, wont he?
  13. If you are only filtering by the batting leaders, of course not very many of them are going to be under 21. It would make sense that the older hitters would have the better hitting numbers. I would guess that if you look at ALL the hitters in AA, the number is probably closer to 15 to 20%. And yes, being 4 years older than the average competition is a huge difference when it comes to the minor leagues. Look at how the Twins college relievers put up video game numbers in rookie ball last year.
  14. Not necessarily. I'm only speaking for guys like Benson who have all the tools, but for whatever reason something isnt quite clicking. Most of your 5 tool prospects are going to be drafted out of HS or as a 16 year old I'ntl signing. I think you move on a lot sooner if the guy doesnt have the tools.
  15. Not that it matters much to the context of this discussion, but I'm pretty sure Victorino is going to play RF for Boston.
  16. I agree. I think with a guy like Benson who has the tools, but for whatever reason may or may never develop them, that you keep giving them chances to be an everyday player until they run out of options. Then, at that point, if they are good enough, you use up their cheap years as a 4th OF'er or some other minor role capacity, and then once they get to the point where they reach their 2nd or 3rd arb years, you move on again.
  17. Or perhaps some of us think that if they are going to shed payroll significantly, and presumably rebuild, that maybe any extra AB's they have available should go to someone who actually has a chance to be part of that rebuilt team, rather than waste them on a 29 year old career minor leaguer? If any AB's go to Collabello then it doesnt look as much like rebuilding as it does just plain being cheap. I think after buying them a very nice new stadium, its not too much for the paying customers to ask that they do one or the other of rebuild OR build a team with an appropriate payroll. I am not demanding they be better, I am not demanding they raise payroll. I am fully behind cutting payroll and rebuilding, as long as that is what they are actually doing.
  18. Well, luckily for me there are people who must agree with you in my drafts. I've been getting Stras late 2nd/early 3rd round. We'll have to reconvene here at the end of the year when he's making a legit push at 300K's and is the top ranked SP in roto.
  19. When a guy is using his body to make a ton of money, I dont think its harsh at all to have an expectation that he be a professional and do whatever it takes to keep himself in optimum conditioning to get the job done to the best of his abilities. The guy admits that his weight has an adverse effect on his performance, but then dismisses his responsibility with a statement like, "nothing i can do about it." Uh, yeah there is. Google 'roy halladay conditioning routine' once, it can be done. He seems to have the attitude that NOBODY has to work at it, that the guys in great shape were just born that way. Sure, a small percentage are lucky and were, but most are in that shape because they have insane workout and conditioning routines. I've read articles where he has the same laissez-faire attitude regarding his secondary pitches. When a team is so eager to trade him and a pretty good prospect, this type of thing raises a bit of a red flag as to why the Phillies were so quick to give up on him.
  20. To expand on the lottery analogy, its just like taking the cash option instead of the annual payments.
  21. Unless he gets hurt or falls into a Benson-esque funk down at AAA he should be up for good as soon as Willy, Doumit or Morneau is traded.
  22. The key is to find an Asian doctor, they have smaller fingers.
  23. I think someone ought to tell Worley that calories in is not the only part of the equation. This guy spent a couple years around Roy Halladay, and didnt learn anything about conditioning? I can see now why the Phillies were so eager to trade him. Hopefully May develops into a solid starter.
  24. Personally, I like Hendricks above those other guys because Hendricks is the only one of those guys that I view as a medium to long term MLB pitcher, albeit a back end one, but still. And, since its a lost season, I'd just assume give Hendricks 190 innings and see what happens. Its time to find out if he can be a 4 or 5 in this league, and we arent going to know from short stints and/or time at AAA.
  25. I guess I don't look to tiny sample sizes such as ST and the WBC to determine if a guy is one of the 25 best players or not.
