  1. Are you trying to make the argument that having a bunch of DFA candidates is a GOOD thing? That the Twins should receive a BETTER score because of this? I really think you are missing the point of the 'mobility' score. The type of players that score you points in the 'mobility' category are guys like Span and Revere. They were quality, young, cost controlled players who give you flexibility because you can either get quality innings from them at a cheap price, or you can trade them for significant pieces, and if they struggle they presumably have options remaining which gives you even more flexibility. The current Twins roster doesn't have many of those type of players. I would say Dozier and Perkins are probably the only ones that fit that category.
  2. Because MLB Executives of the Year who have rebuilt 2 different franchises don't know much about baseball?
  3. Not only that, but there is a technicality that allows you to lead the team (and even the league) without actually having the PA's to qualify. You simply take an 0-for as many PA's as you need to qualify. For example, you are 145-400 and have 484 PA's, giving you a .363 BA. But, you are 18 PA's short of qualifying. So, you simply are given an 0-18, which puts you at 145-418 for an AVG of .347. I think (not sure though) that a couple of players have won the batting title this way, but I think it's been a long time since it's happened.
  4. I think we need to have our 1999, and 2000 before we can have our 2001. 1999 being the year the prospects actually get up here, 2000 being the year they gel and learn how to stay competitive all year, and 2001 being the year they finally put it together. Wake me up when Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Meyer and May get up here. Until then, we are still at least 3 years out.
  5. I would guess the idea is that it is almost impossible to use WMD's without harming a lot of civilians. You can't really aim sarin gas, at least not the same way you can aim a bullet or a bomb.
  6. He is NOT a prospect, why do people keep calling him one? He's well over the cutoff, BOTH in terms of AB's and service time, for ROY consideration, which is the parameter for being a "prospect".
  7. At this point, any lineup without Bernier in it is a good one.
  8. Ramirez also has a SLG% that would make Ben Revere blush. There is more to baseball than just batting average. You can't have a corner outfielder with NO power, unless he can steal 40+ bases, or plays GG defense, neither of which Ramirez does.
  9. Yep, totally agree. Once Pirates ownership agreed to go over budget, the Twins had no shot at getting a better prospect. Not every GM is a penny pincher like Terry. Not every GM WANTS to be cheap, even if ownership tells him he doesn't have to. Once ownership says they will cover the salary, why on earth would any good GM want to give up anything more than he has to, to save money that ownership isn't asking him to save???
  10. The Twins got something back, however little, for a player that was not part of the future plans of the team, and was going to walk away for nothing in a few months. I don't get what there is to hate about this. Sure, we would have liked to get a better return, but how much value did you think Morneau had? He's just not a very good player, you guys are caught up way too much in the sentiment of Justin Morneau. He's not that guy anymore. IMO, the real story of the (lack of) return that we got for him is just how far Justin has fallen, that he has less value than Drew Butera, than it is anything Terry Ryan did (or didn't do) in this deal.
  11. Didn't you already deem 2012 an aberration in your "2nd year at a level" argument? Is 2012 only an aberration when it fits your argument, and not the opposing argument?
  12. Why would it give you a bad rep? In his idea (that I quoted), it was just for gamesmanship, it would be to replace Morneau at 1B.
  13. This is actually a really good idea, one that I would have given a ton of credit to Ryan if he had pulled off. Hats off to you sir.
  14. Perhaps the payroll slashing of the last couple of years is more intentional than many want to admit? Perhaps Terry Ryan really is under demand from ownership to make/save them as much money as possible? Typically teams accept the cash considerations because they are right at their budget, and want to make sure they keep payroll where it needs to be. I can't see any other reason why a team in our payroll situation would take the cash considerations, instead of as John puts it, "digging deep in the KC system to try to find something". Even if that player has a 1% chance or less of ever amounting to anything, that is still better than money that isn't going to be used for anything to help the product on the field.
  15. The Mariners wouldn't know that we had claimed Morse until it was too late, I believe.
  16. Not trying to take cheap shots, but I really don't think the Twins FO is capable of thinking that far outside the box. Sorry, but I just don't think they even considered that. Not to mention, that judging by their asking price, they didn't have any serious intentions of trading him to begin with.
  17. Okay, then say we offer 4/24? After all, with the payroll flexibility the Twins have right now, is that extra $2 MM per going to matter all that much? Tell me where else the Twins are going to find a #3 starter for $6 million per year? They just paid $5 million per for a #5 starter. Look, I'm just saying the Twins need to change their approach. If you want to, you can find flaws and red flags regarding any and all international free agents. At some point the Twins are going to have to say, "you know what, this guy is a risk. We might get burned, but hey, right now we can afford it. We are going to go out on a limb and take a chance on one of these guys." The Twins are too risk adverse when it comes to these types of players, IMO.
  18. I completely agree with the bolded, and have said as much. I just don't think "good" GM's waste everyone's time by putting a guy on waivers, then demanding an absurd asking price for him, a price so high he knows darn well it will never be accepted. Is that how you gain respect among other GM's? I dunno, perhaps this is common place, if it is then obviously I'm blowing this way out of proportion. But, I run a business, and I know that I would be at least annoyed, if not angered, if people played these kind of games with me.
  19. So Gardy has Mastro in right, and Clete in center. Can someone please remind me again how none of our failures have anything to with Gardy? Even if you are not given much talent to work with, wouldn't a good manager make sure he maximizes whatever strengths they DO have?
  20. Actually he's right. I play poker online, and my screen name has the Twins in it, and honestly I can't tell you how often I join a table or a tournament and get reminded about how much of a joke our team is. It is in the thousands by now.
  21. I don't disagree with that. But I just think the exceptions are much fewer and more far in between then our government does. Nazi Germany exterminating millions of innocent people? Yeah, that crosses a line. But 99% of the crap we stick our noses in doesn't come anywhere near crossing that line. I also don't believe we are the only people on the planet with moral values. It doesn't need to be us every time. There are plenty of other civilized countries on the planet, it is about time one of them steps up and handles some of these situations. By us being the one to step in everytime, we are basically sub contracting our military out to every other civilized nation on earth, FOR FREE.
  22. We shall see. I think these guys penalize a lot more than you think they do when a guy repeats a level and doesn't destroy it.
  23. Jeez, even BA is now calling him Alex "Meyers"? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH. (I'm not quite sure why this bothers me so much:confused:.)
  24. You don't think the Twins could use a #3 starter for just 3/12? This team gave Nick Blackburn, at best a #5 starter, 4/14. This team gave Kevin Correia, at best a #5 starter, 2/10. I can see why most teams would shy away from him. Most teams already have a #3 pitcher. But for a team as devoid of starting pitching as the Twins, a team with nothing but #5/AAAA pitchers, a team literally drowning in payroll flexibility, I just don't see that much risk. 4 million per, and 12 million total really isnt that much to swallow if it doesn't work out.
  25. There is zero chance that May makes any top 100 list. In fact I think he'll drop significantly on our organizational lists. I don't think he'll even crack our top 10, and could be closer to 15 than 10. When a prospect his age, repeating a level, fails to make a step forward, that is the equivalent of taking a huge step back, at least in the eyes of those who compile these lists.
