  1. Why are those the only options? (Morneau, Parm, Cola) We could sign someone better. A fringe prospect could come out of nowhere and become a productive first baseman. Miguel Sano might come up here and not stick at 3B, yes the reports are that he should, at least short term, but keep in mind that the "reports" also said Plouffe and Dozier were SS's, things can change when you get to "the show". My point is that you have plenty to gain by moving on from Morneau (even if the odds are low), but there is nothing really to gain by keeping him. He's a replacement level 1B, it's called REPLACEMENT LEVEL for a reason. We can plug someone in there at the league minimum salary, without tying our hands to a multi year deal, and get similar production.
  2. Bullying is not constructive adversity. I'd be curious of an example of what you consider to be "extreme anti bullying"? I'd also be curious of an example of an acceptable level of bullying? I agree that kids need to face all kinds of constructive adversity. I agree on your point about the leagues that don't keep score. That is absurd. There is nothing wrong with teaching kids to be competitive, and that games and sports have winners and losers. It is important to teach kids as early as possible how to be a good winner and to keep from being a poor sport when they lose, which you can't do if you don't keep score. But bullying is a completely different thing. There is nothing positive that can be learned from bullying. There is no constructive life lesson that a kid can take away from being tormented, assulted, or humiliated on an ongoing basis. There are all kinds of major issues in America that can probably be traced in some way back to bullying. Kids are like sponges, they soak up everything. All bullying does is teach the bully that they can take advantage of the weak, something that many will carry into adulthood (which causes obvious problems in society), and causes resentment, isolation, and paranoia to form in the developing brain of the kid being bullied (which also causes quite obvious societal problems.) I agree that kids are treated far too softly these days in many instances, but frankly this anti bullying campaign is definitely not one of them.
  3. I don't think anyone is arguing that he's not a good manager.
  4. The bolded is not accurate at all. Ortiz played his last year here for 950k, then went to BOST where he signed for $1.25 million. That is a pay raise, not a pay cut. In fact, he was still under team control, if the Twins wanted him all they had to do was offer ARB, which would have paid him only slightly more than he signed with BOST for, probably about $1.5 to $1.8 million.
  5. And what happens if Morneau declines even more in year 1 or 2 of that 3 year contract? Suddenly instead of a league average 1B, you are stuck with a well below average 1B who has too much fan sentiment to bench, and can't be traded. At least with the young guys who will give you similar production, you control them year to year, and are not tied to them.
  6. I don't think you throw your money away by giving him any guaranteed money. It's a long shot that he'll ever pitch in the big leagues again. If you really wan't to take a chance, do a minor league deal with an opt out date, a la Harden.
  7. I know nobody would, but you could make the case for a stand up person doing "a solid" for the team that paid him $45 million over the last 3 years to be a leave average first baseman.
  8. Nobody is willing to do that, hence him clearing waivers.
  9. Opponent OPS by leverage: High: .663 Med: .755 Low: .731
  10. Now we are using ONE GAME sample sizes?
  11. I don't buy that. When you choose to be a public figure, you take the good with the bad. Along with the millions of dollars, and all the perks, you agree to take some unfair criticism at times. If you don't want people to not like you for things out of your control, go be an accountant or a dentist or something. Of course, the hate can get out of hand at times, but I don't think it was with Punto. Plenty of people liked him. It's not like he was universally hated.
  12. In what way does Rosario look more ready than Sano?
  13. Dick once said that it's better for a team to bunt a guy to 3rd, then drive him in with a sac fly, than to hit a solo HR. Yes, I am not lying, he actually said that 1 run that costs 2 outs is better than 1 run that costs 0 outs.
  14. Yeah, that was the observation I took from last night's broadcast, that TK was literally born to evaluate and develop baseball talent. I was on the edge of my seat last night at times. The Twins are lucky to have him in even his limited role within the organization. He is to discussing baseball as Stephen Hawking is to discussing the Universe.
  15. The Twins better not make the mistake of getting fooled by a tiny sample size, but knowing their history, I wouldn't be shocked if they did.
  16. I'm sure Sano's unlucky 70 point (from his career) drop in babip has a little bit to do with that AVG. His K/rate and BB/rate are right in line with the rest of his career so far, and he's Slugging .561. What was Hicks slg% in AA? He may or may not be ready defensively. If he's not ready offensively, he's pretty damn close. Don't let the AVG fool you, he is destroying AA pitching. Even with that supressed AVG, he's 3rd in the Eastern League in OPS.
  17. Gardy has to attack Jim Leyland now. I've been told that is the only way to defend your players.
  18. If you are going to bring up Sano, why would you put him on the bench? He'd be our 2nd best hitter immediately.
  19. That is sick. Just to put that in perspective, Drew Butera career line: .182/.230/.263
  20. TK said last night during the AA broadcast that Rosario is NOT a natural 2B, but works very hard at it so should be able to stick.
  21. Most teams #5 would be our ace right now, no joke.
  22. But we don't have guys with 6 K/9, we have guys with 4 K/9.
  23. Think about Chris Herrmann. How awful is your lineup when Herrmann is your #6 hitter?
  24. Yeah, I keep hearing he'll get to start 2014 by default, but I'm not so sure of that. He's ARB eligible this winter, so I could see them non tendering him, and just promoting or signing some AAAA placeholder for the league minimum until Sano is ready.
  25. I'm a little tired of hearing all the excuses given to defend the Twins on this issue. Liriano's performance is a major indictment on the Twins staff. No matter whose "fault" it is, clearly the Pirates have found a way to get the most out of Liriano, period.
