  1. I think we can get it done if we're willing to throw in Duensing.
  2. You ever hear the saying , "you get what you pay for"? There is a reason the tix are 2 bucks.
  3. No, I don't disagree with any of that. I just think people should be able to criticize certain aspects of his game without being burned at the stake, which is what is happening in this thread. I don't understand why a person cannot BOTH think that Mauer is a HOF player, and also has flaws that he could work on, as I do.
  4. So a fastball down the middle is not a strong, hittable pitch?
  5. His change up was his only "plus' pitch coming out of college, the fastball and change were graded as average. He'd have been a top 3 to 5 overall pick with 3 plus pitches.
  6. You forgot Arcia to the DL.
  7. I don't see how it's possible for Mauer to have more success when swinging at the first pitch, as I've been told its about as relevant as adjusting one's cup. I wonder what Joe's AVG and SLG are after he adjusts his cup? I think we need that data to truly know the whole story.
  8. I don't think Mauer is nearly the most frequently criticized Twin.
  9. Mauer has 419 career XBH's, versus 519 career non intentional walks. So while yes, the odds are better that he walks than gets an XBH, its not as wide of a margin as you would suggest.
  10. No, swinging at first pitches is nothing like adjusting your cup. When the first pitch is a fastball right down the middle, and likely to be the best pitch you see all AB, I think it garners a bit more of a debate then adjusting your cup does.
  11. Why do you automatically assume that he would make an out had he swung at the first pitch right down the middle of the plate? I don't have a heat map handy, but I'm guessing the AVG for a hitter of Joe's caliber is off the charts when it comes to fastballs right down the middle, it might even be over .500. If your argument is that he MIGHT have made an out, well by that logic no player should ever swing at any pitch, because if they do they might make an out.
  12. I guess I just fundamentally disagree with you that just because he is a great hitter means he is perfect and cannot ever be criticized for any reason, at any time.
  13. Yes, because people who find ONE thing to nitpick about Mauers game therefore think he's a terrible baseball player.
  14. Because cmat twisted the facts to fit his argument. He claimed that Joe looked at 4 balls and 2 pitchers pitches. So let me get thsi straight, now we can not only NOT criticize Joe, but we also can't even call into question anyone who is making an argument for him? If I just made up "facts" to support an "anti Joe" argument, I'm guessing you wouldn't be giving me as much of a pass.
  15. Personally, I think Mauer could be an even better hitter than he already is if he went up there with the plan of swinging at the most hittable pitch he gets, regardless of which pitch it is. As someone else said earlier, all OBP is not created equal. In general a single has more value than a walk, a double more than a single, etc. If Mauer is passing up pitches right down the middle so that he can coax a walk, I think that is a perfectly reasonable thing to debate. Just because he is a great hitter, does not make him perfect, jeez man everyone has flaws. I don't understand why someone is beyond critique just because he's really good. I think some people in here assume that anyone criticizing an aspect of Joe's game they don't agree with equates to them saying they don't think he's a good hitter. I don't get that impression, I guess.
  16. No, I'm simply refuting cmat's argument that he didn't get any hittable pitches in the AB.
  17. And one of their arguments for the FA signings as well was something along the lines of, "we felt that last year we got far too many short, ineffective starts early in the year, and that just kind of snowballed and affected the entire team, negatively, for the season." But here we go again, giving them a pass for completely not bothering to show up at the start of the season. A quality start is an incredibly mediocre thing to achieve, 6 innings with a 4.50 ERA, and yet 9 games in we have 1 quality start!
  18. This is the AB in question. For the record, do you classify that 1st pitch strike right down the middle of the plate as a "pitchers pitch"? If that is a "pitchers pitch", then what, I ask, would you consider a hittable pitch? http://brooksbaseball.baseballprospectus.com/pfxVB/numlocation.php?pitchSel=519096&game=gid_2014_04_09_oakmlb_minmlb_1/&batterX=92&innings=yyyyyyyyy&sp_type=1&s_type=3&league=mlb
  19. I took your advice and looked at the similarity scores on bbref. I found it convenient that you chose those two names, while leaving out the names that he's actually MORE similar to, including Alexei Ramirez, Asdrubal Cabrera, and by age, JJ Hardy and Ian Desmond.
  20. I'm pretty sure I said almost. For every Florimon at SS there is a Bartlett in LF, a Delmon Young in LF even though he made so much more sense in RF, getting Hardy run out of town, putting Revere's elite range in a corner OF because he didn't want to hurt Span's feelings, etc., etc., etc.
  21. True, but none of those players would go 7 pages in 12 hours. A Burton thread might not go 7 posts in 12 hours.
  22. I meant stolen bases and tagging up on fly balls that most players wouldn't be able to, and going first to 3rd on hits that most players wouldn't be able to, stuff like that.
  23. Is Shin Soo Choo a top 5 player in baseball? I'm sorry, Mauer is a great player, but I'm afraid I can't get on the bandwagon that you just sort by OBP and there is your list of best players in baseball. So much more to the game than JUST getting on base, especially when some of the sluggers also have an OBP that is at least in the neighborhood of Mauer's.
  24. I'd say bringing up the player we traded for Nunez is pretty safely on topic. I'll also say that given the fact that Nunez currently has a NEGATIVE career WAR, it is entirely possible that Sulbaran could be the more valuable player in this trade by simply NOT ever making the major leagues.
  25. Yeah the money is a ZERO issue. If we were right up against payroll budget, then I could see the argument. But as it is we are not even coming close to spending all the way to our budget.
