  1. If everything but the progression of the guys already on the team (aka do nothing and hope we get better) is marginal, then why even fire Terry Ryan?
  2. But if you sign Bradford to a big extension, can you afford to keep an elite defense? That's where my problem lies. Maybe for a year or two you can, but not for the entirety of the contract.
  3. Yeah, the Trump supporters that I know have no problems with any of this. They are all for half of it, and the other half they insist is fake news.
  4. When I say keep an elite defense, I'm including continually reloading it when guys get old. I'm not just speaking of the guys we have now. If you have a QB on a rookie contract, you can afford to do that. I realize we've already had the championship or bust argument in the Twins forum, and I think I recall we disagreed. I just don't see Bradford as being a SB winning QB. 10 win seasons with no payoff do nothing for me at this point, I've seen plenty of those in my life. So from my point of view, I don't care what the consequences are of passing on Bradford and missing in the draft. Whether we keep Bradford and have a few 10 win seasons, or we keep trying to draft a legit, elite QB and fail, the end result will be the same to me- no SB wins. But, at least with the latter path we have a chance to find that next Brady or Rodgers or Big Ben. I respect that you disagree, either by thinking a division championship is good enough, or that Bradford can win a title. I just feel differently.
  5. Of course the odds go down as you go through the draft. I was responding to someone who said the only way to get another franchise QB is to lose a lot. That implies that it's impossible to get one anywhere but with a top 10 pick, which isn't true. Is it harder to find one later? Yeah, duh. Not impossible though. The are plenty of examples, not just Brady. Of course Stafford is a franchise QB. I said they can be found "all over the draft". That includes first overall. How do you propose keeping an elite defense when you have to commit $20+ million per year to Bradford? If you commit that much to one position it better be a guy like Brady or Peyton or Rodgers or Big Ben, a guy that can carry a team on his own. I don't feel Bradford is in that class. I'd rather keep the elite defense together until we find a guy like that. Just because those guys are far and few between, doesn't mean you resign yourself to never being able to have one. The Packers found a way to turnover from Favre to Rodgers, and they didn't need a top 10 pick to do so. Every now and then a guy like Rodgers or Wilson falls in the draft and everyone has a shot at them. Maybe Bridgewater would have been that guy, we'll likely never know now. I don't trust Bradford to ever be more than a guy just good enough to win 9 or 10 games every couple of years, but with no rings.
  6. I find it hilarious how secretive pro sports management is. Why would you have coaches in place and not reveal it? Hoping for a competitive advantage against your opening day opponent?
  7. Gonsalves was a 4th ROUND pick, not a #4 overall pick. That's a home run if they get a 4th or 5th starter for a few years, which would appear to be his floor at this point.
  8. He may have been joking, but he's at least partially right. Morneau had already suffered multiple concussion before he even made the big leagues, and I don't recall any appeals to retire for the sake of his health back when he was a perennial MVP candidate. And that's OK. He's a grown man, he gets to make his own decisions. It's his life to live. Nobody has to feel bad if they don't worry about another adults health choices, 64 ounce big gulps not withstanding.
  9. OPS+ is a rate start, not a counting stat, so not playing in the majors until July doesn't make it any more impressive. 100 OPS+ at DH isn't enough reward, IMO, to justify not seeing what you have in Vargas and/or Park. Vargas has a career OPS+ of 103, and still has potential to improve.
  10. I really hope that Dave's source is wrong, because passing on Deleon AND Alvarez is, to me, a fireable offense. And I don't want to have to bail on the FO this soon.
  11. 1 year service time isn't the threshold for rookie status in the MLB. 50 innings pitched or 45 days of service time, whichever comes first. If they set the bar at 1 year service time, then every player would get 2 shots at ROY, since it's rare for a rookie to come up on opening day.
  12. He only has a better bat than Hocking if you include his unrepeatable and luck driven 2014. His last 2 seasons OPS+ have been well below Hocking's career OPS+. And, he's a far, far worse defender than Hocking. Hocking was essentially replacement level on defense (-0.4 dWAR). Santana has already managed to rack up negative 1.5 dWAR in just 3 seasons. I guess technically you can call a guy who can play a few positions horribly "versatile", but I don't think it's the kind of versatility we want.
  13. I disagree. Franchise QB's can be found all over the draft. If you list all the legit franchise QB's in the NFL, how many were taken in the first half of the first round? Look at the franchise QB's in the playoffs this year- Brady Roethlisberger Rodgers Ryan Prescott Wilson I think only 1 (Ryan) of those guys was picked in the top half of the first round. I'm not a fan of locking up Bradford. I think he's just good enough to keep you competitive, but not good enough to win Super Bowls. The salary of a franchise QB limits keeping a core around him. That means you have to either find one that you believe can be a perennial SB threat, or cycle through guys on rookie deals and be able to afford a good core around them.
  14. I think that will actually lead to more major moves at this year's deadline. Sellers will be willing to move players that they won't be able to protect in the expansion draft.
  15. It's only a logical move if you think you can compete for a WS during his 2 years. If not, then it's just stubborn and a waste of an asset. It's a bummer if a fierce market never develops for Dozier. You could even call it bad luck. But I think it's silly to let an asset expire when you could have gotten 75 cents on the dollar.
  16. And what if Dozier says no thanks to an extension and hits FA? You are going to let him walk for nothing? If that is your answer, fine, that's what I wanted to know. I'll be pretty upset if the FO takes that route though.
  17. What if the market never catches up to their internal evaluation? That is my question.
  18. And what if no other team agrees with the Twins evaluation? Just get nothing for him and let him walk in 2 years? Sign him to a massive extension and pay big for his post productive seasons? A players value is what the free market dictates it is. They aren't the electric company. They don't get to just set a price and force people to pay it.
  19. The approach so far seems to be do nothing, and cross our fingers hoping our players improve. The trade market is what it is. DeLeon may be less than Dozier's absolute value, but it's still better than nothing. Calling it a bad trade is an opinion, not a fact.
  20. I'd rather have DeLeon for 6 years than Dozier for two. Any additional players would have just been a bonus. I'm very skeptical that Dozier will ever fetch a prospect anywhere close to DeLeon. Another regime that fails to move expiring assets at their peak. So frustrating.
  21. I think you are getting a little too excited over Garver, while simultaneously underestimating how rare it is for a catcher to hit well. Considering Castro had a career milb OPS 40 points higher than Garver, Garver will be lucky to hit anywhere close to what Castro has. Garver projects as a decent backup catcher, with an outside shot at being a league average starting catcher at his peak. That is likely his ceiling.
  22. We don't know that Trumbo will have the better 2017 than Vargas. Their career OPS aren't far apart, and Vargas is younger, and only costs the league minimum. He also has an option remaining.
  23. A 93 OPS+ at catcher isn't that bad. Florimon was putting up OPS+ in the 60's as a SS. That is a huge difference, and Florimon was given 700 plate appearances as a Twin, that is not a short leash.
  24. I'd love to have Patterson back. But, it only takes 1 team to think they can fix his flaws and offer him a ridiculous Tayvon Austin like contract. When I make statements regarding adding another WR, it's under the assumption that Patterson leaves. If he comes back then disregard it.
  25. In the modern NFL, a 3rd WR is essentially a starter. If we can get Patterson back it's fine, but if not then I don't want any of those other options getting anything close to starting snaps. If we lose Patterson, then adding a third WR is a pretty big need, imo.
