  1. I know there are much more pressing issues facing this club, but how Dozier and now Hunter have at-bats in the #2 slot but Joe Mauer, the most #2 hitter in the history of baseball, has none, is beyond me.
  2. Does Terry Ryan have what it takes to lead the Twins in 2015? [ahem] No.
  3. I don't think TR was lying. I think he actually believed it. Which is actually worse. Because while I've defended him because of the mess he inherited, I will no longer do it. Because he actually had video and data available to him and still believed Hunter would be "fine" in RF, that tells me everything I need to know. It tells me he doesn't know how to use those tools to effectively evaluate major league ballplayers. And there's just no damn excuse for that in 2015.
  4. For me it's the White Sox, though much like many of you, it goes back to the Ozzie and AJ days. I don't know how much hatred there is still left, but I really do like to see them struggle. Would love to see this rivalry reignited soon!
  5. I second this. I think this is mighty reasonable.
  6. Part of me wants to think this is pretty simplistic. The rational part of me, which says it's about accumulating better players, players who put the right stats up that help you win ballgames. But the examples you loaded this article full of tell a pretty damning story, and one that may be starting to change. Sounding the bell of "attitude, desire and accountability" always seems too easy and empty to me, but maybe there's some truth here. For whatever reason, there did seem to be times where players weren't committed and perhaps not responding to Gardenhire. Is it worth ten games? I don't know, I'm skeptical, but I really appreciate this article. Would be nice to see this all translate to more wins on the field.
  7. I think that we put way too much importance on who is on the 25-man roster for game 1 of the season. Now, if it's Jason Bartlett, I get it, because that guy shouldn't have even been on a 40-man in 2014. But in this situation, I'm not sure it's all that important. I'm pretty sure everyone will get their shot at one point or another. I share the frustration some have in wanting to see Meyer and May at Target Field, but if I take the long view, I'm not sure it matters if it is in April or in June.
  8. Twins aren't broadcasting the game; only the Rays have a radio broadcast.
  9. Rays radio guys are gushing over Neil Allen this inning. They have such great things to say about him - not anything we haven't heard before, but nice to hear it from guys who have been around him.
  10. Yeah, if Arcia can continue development at the plate, be more disciplined and make more consistent contact, he'll be a beast.
  11. I know this has all been said before, but I would really urge everyone to do a couple things as it relates to Joe Mauer: 1. Use the statistical facts to determine his strengths and shortcomings. Don't spout out "he hits into a lot of DPs". There are resources readily available that you can use to refute this in approximately 90 seconds. Use the Internet. We live in such a great age for baseball fandom. 2. Acknowledge that Joe Mauer does have shortcomings. Stop wanting him to be the player we decided to pay $23 million/year to. He had a career year at the right time. Get over it. It's sunk. The contract is done. Is he worth that as a 1B with his career averages? No. But he's not as far off as you'd think. His strengths are getting on base and baserunning. Those strengths are best leveraged very early in the lineup. I happen to argue for #1, in part because there's no clear alternative. But any spot in the top 3 is defensible. I just think we need to view him for who he is and leverage him appropriately. He's a valuable asset who can help you at the top of the lineup.
  12. Sorry, I know the conversation has moved past this at this point, but I wanted to address this. I think this is a really honest post and probably addresses a lot of what people feel. We totally think of the Rickey Henderson type when we think of leadoff hitters (or, in modern terms, Billy Hamilton if he could actually OBP .300 some day). But, I have come around in the last couple years to wanting Mauer at the top of a Twins lineup. Take a peek at UBR ratings on Fangraphs and you'll see that Mauer is consistently rated as a very good or great baserunner (7th in UBR last year). So, he's not speedy, but is a smart and talented guy who can take the extra base. So yes, I think he's proven he can go 1st to home on a double in the gap. He makes up for some of the lack in speed with his deftness on the basepaths. So, put me on the "bat Mauer first" train. I think it best takes advantage of a couple of his greatest skills: getting on base and baserunning.
  13. Think of it this way - the strike zone is a box you're throwing into. The average SP is taller than Berrios for a reason - if you release the ball at the top of your motion, it goes into the strike zone with a sinking motion. If you compare Berrios to pitchers 4 or 5 inches taller, it will naturally come in flatter, which is theoretically easier to track and to hit. However, nobody said Berrios is destined to fail because of this disadvantage. It is only that - a disadvantage. Guys like Johan had enough other tools to offset that. I wouldn't get too stuck on the word disadvantage. All these guys are working with disadvantages. They just need to overcome them.
  14. If they would be willing to deal Corey Dickerson instead, well, then I'd listen. I want no part of Charlie Blackmon. Dickerson was .735 OPS on the road with a 102 wRC. Probably why they'd rather hang on to him.
  15. Looks like he was actually drafted in 2009 according to Baseball Reference http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=corcin001edg
  16. I just wanted to say I like what you're trying to do; as a previous commenter stated, any effort to improve defensive metrics helps. I can't offer any help or helpful critique, but thank you.
  17. I don't want to get too presumptuous about what certain player can do and not do, but good organizations figure out how to deal with good problems such as the one that led off this string. If Plouffe has the kind of season you're talking about, and if Sano tears the cover off the ball at AA/AAA all year (and maybe during a September cup of coffee at MLB), then Molitor/Ryan et. al. have an amazing problem on their hands. I'm with Bark that I have a huge hang-up trading a contributor like Plouffe (if he hits for numbers like that). So...the first conversation I try to have is with Mr. Joe Mauer. Will Joe make a move to RF? His arm and athleticism would play very well at Target Field RF in my opinion. If 1B is freed up, Sano or Plouffe could move over there. There's a lot of ifs in this - but I think it's a road to explore.
  18. Well, if I'm in on Hamels, I probably don't sign Ervin Santana, but I'll leave that aside for now. I absolutely explore this if I'm in TR's seat. Guessing PHI wouldn't take Nolasco back, so I think about dealing Alex Meyer and seeing what else it takes. Selling Danny Santana high and figuring out SS might be a good addition to this deal. Would Meyer and Santana be enough? Or do we chat about other younger guys to include instead of Santana? Worth discussing. Bottom line; in my opinion, another $20 million on the payroll through 2018 is not crippling. I would have to convince my boss to continue to shell out money, which admittedly wouldn't be easy. So if I believe enough in my teams through 2018 (and I do), then yeah, I would definitely see what might work. Opportunities to get an ace don't come around too often. And his salary now has to be considered below market value.
  19. Great read. And very accurate. If the Twins aren't spending yet because they plan to add significantly once the kids are up, fine, then you have a plan. But they have the money - I don't want to read anything about "small markets" or "budgets tapped out". This team could afford a lot more salary.
  20. Wow, what a burning #HotTake. So basically, the argument boils down to not the manager, but that we need one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball. Awesome. I agree completely. Any ideas on how we do that? I'll look for more of your content in the future.
  21. This is a fun topic. The transition has begun. For me, it got delayed too long; somewhat because of Twins FO fault (mediocre pitcher signings, reunion tour, lack of aggressiveness in prospect promotion) and somewhat just plain bad luck (injuries, Mauer). I am excited to see the trades that have happened the last 15 days. The FO (finally) is making a decision to accelerate this transition a bit and get the young guys in the bigs, or at least closer. One could make a realistic argument this should have started with more grit last year at this time; I'm not so sure the timing and circumstances would have benefited the Twins as much as some believe, but this has seemed to take forever. We are starting to see us close in on a core that, even with some things that don't go right (which those things will exist) should have a floor of .500 baseball or even a couple wins better. From there, the money should be PLENTY available to go out and buy a few more wins and make this a potential 90-win team in 2016. I'm looking forward to watching baseball the rest of the year, which is more than I could say last year at this time. So that's something.
  22. How does the rainout impact May's timeline? These short starts aren't helping to get him to MLB...
  23. Well, that clearly was not the case in Boston...did you read the story?
  24. Trying to make the connection....Pino goes down...Polanco probably goes down when Plouffe is ready...we need another SP again, right? Is it Trevor May time?
  25. Well, that's always subjective, isn't it? Fans probably have a tendency to be too aggressive, while owners may tend to protect the perceived pocketbook too often. Tough to say, but the numbers put up lately by May especially would tell most that he can compete well at the MLB level. Tough to argue against Meyer as well, though there's a bit less of a track record there.
