  1. Boom. Exactly right. The salary is entirely irrelevant. I wouldn't be against them giving this a try, but they won't, and further, if they did, it would probably say a lot about what they think about for Buxton in 2016, which would not be fun for us as fans to hear.
  2. OK - I hear you - and don't necessarily disagree, but if he's truly promoted at the end of April into a fulltime rotation role, I'm not sure it's a bad thing.
  3. I love the sentiment in this post, but in reality, give 3 starts to a lesser pitcher in return for an extra year of control? That's a trade I'd make every time.
  4. I disagree with this - management has already hinted at a move to the bullpen. I think there's little chance Nolasco is in the rotation to start the season.
  5. It's my opinion that you are focusing on the wrong indicators, but we shall see. As a Twins fan I hope you're right.
  6. I have a hard time with this topic and how it's spun by some. ABW has never been a top prospect, and his removal from that status does not signify some sort of 'Twins Way' evaluation failure (by the way - the only time I see people mention "Twins Way" is by people who think people still say that). He probably won't make it as an MLB regular. But if he does - that doesn't mean people were wrong. There isn't much of a blueprint for guys like him making it. I'm not optimistic. But I'm sure he's a good guy and I definitely hope we're all wrong. Chances are we'll at least get to see a few at bats at Target Field this season.
  7. This is true, eventually, but it could be possible that some of the above names Nick gave us are gettable on a minor league deal with the invite to big league spring training. By the time a 40 man addition would be needed, the move could have simply taken care of itself (60 day DL, trade, etc.). Makes sense to continue to monitor the market and stay in touch with agents, in my opinion.
  8. I don't really get the point of Walters writing this, but you could say that about thousands of things he's written over the year. A guy's gotta troll, I guess.... I think virtually all Twins fans just really want to see it on the field at this point. No one really cares what kind of shape he's in right now or what his training plan is. We just hope (along with Mauer, I'm sure) that #7's performance is closer to what we'd previously expected.
  9. So good. Thank you, Seth. Will be watching for a quick promotion to Chattanooga for Mr. Gonsalves.
  10. Actually, no, if you have a cable/satellite subscription that gets you FSN North, you can watch online starting in 2016. That agreement was signed back in October.
  11. A lot of angst over the host. My bet would be that those who go (I can't, I'll be in Orlando) will have a great time. We're probably better off worrying less about the MC - I'm sure he's a nice guy that will help make a great event.
  12. I don't disagree with this. I think they should have gone out and been in the running to sign a Heyward and make a Rosario or Plouffe trade (I'd veer Rosario, but that's me). By the way, I would still make a run at Justin Upton (I know, my line of thinking probably isn't agreed with by most). That would improve the OF offensively and defensively. But at this point in FA, I don't see a lot of options that greatly improve the team. Signing 4 FAs "just because" that raise our payroll to $150M probably doesn't make much sense. I fail to see much of a road to improvement going that route. Signing middle of the road FAs is a path to having more Ricky Nolascos on the team in most cases.
  13. Yeah.....this is what I wanted to say, and now I didn't have to spend 10 minutes writing it! It's a bit disappointing to see spending stay stagnant, but at this point, I don't see a lot of upside in spending more money. They definitely could have afforded to go after the guys mentioned above and it would have improved the team...but those ships have sailed.

    Nunez

It's hard for me to get too worked up about this. I probably would have leaned toward letting Nunez walk even before last year, not to mention this year, but at the end of the day he's probably an acceptable bench option. I think this is one of those issues that will probably clear up a bit by the end of spring training. If later, fine. A DFA of a guy owed less than $1.5 million is probably not going to be a big deal. This just doesn't seem like an issue to sweat too much.
  15. Thanks for sharing - fun read.
  16. Interesting article: http://www.startribune.com/twins-kepler-may-be-on-rise/360423221/ Not sure this is much of anything new, but really confirms he may be MLB ready right now. Makes the Hicks trade make even more sense if true (and they're right).
  17. The return to get Fernandez if he's deemed healthy would be enormous. Not saying I wouldn't explore it, but it would hurt to pay the necessary price. In other news, seriously, what the heck is wrong with baseball in that we allow Jeffrey Loria to continue to own and operate a baseball team?
  18. I have nothing to add. Spot on.
  19. Hermann had only 2 likely outcomes heading into 2016: 1. Catcher X and Suzuki break camp as the catchers, meaning Hermann would have been DFA and probably (but not necessarily) snagged by another team off waivers 2. Molitor, god forbid, keeps 3 catchers so that we don't lose Hermann at the start of the season. Either option is much, much worse than what happened today. Were better trades available? Who knows? But this seems like a pretty good one and better than the two above alternatives for sure. Best of luck to Hermann - hope he can play a role with the Diamondbacks next year and beyond. This is a good return for the Twins and, as others have said, helps to assure that the Twins will address the C position this offseason. Job well done, Twins.
  20. I actually think trading Rosario would get the best relative return compared to future productivity. Classic sell-high. Just a hunch on my part.
  21. And I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think Souhan is right. And I for one think the trade the Twins potentially make involves Rosario or Hicks (maybe Kepler) instead of Plouffe.
  22. Improve the team. We should just want them to improve. This helps - adds a power bat, gives you greater flexibility to trade from a position of strength for a need. As I (and many others) say: DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE MONEY. They may have their highest payroll in history this year. Jim Pohlad didn't suddenly get philanthropic. The Twins, and every other team, are making more money than ever before. They should be aggressive, be spending.....and this does just that. Kudos the the Twins. You get taken seriously when you do everything you can to put a championship-caliber team on the field. This is the move of a team trying to do the right thing.
  23. Good idea, bad idea, intent....really kind of impossible to know at all right now. But I'm trying to think....when was the last time the Twins used an offseason to get a guy reps at a secondary position in order have more lineup/defensive flexibility (or even more surprising, possibly improving trade leverage)? I honestly don't remember it happening anytime recently with a MLBer save for when necessary (see Mauer, Joe). Yes, Danny Santana jumped into CF but that was on the fly during the season. We've been clamoring for them to do this with various guys but maybe not since Trevor Plouffe prior to 2012 have we seen this. So in terms of applause for creativity, I'm giving it up. Give yourself more potential options to get the best bats into the lineup without hurting your defense. It may not work out, but it shouldn't hurt to at least try.
  24. This makes me chuckle. Every single trade we pitch seems to include some variation of Arcia and Stewart, and including guys like Plouffe or Gibson who will demand big money before the trading team has the chance to be back in contention. It's like we think we can assemble together pieces that might sound good but be of minimal pain to us and that the other team will just say "oh, sure, okay, a failed MLB outfielder who can't hit lefties and a former top 100 prospect at class A who strikes out less than 5 per 9? ABSOLUTELY!" Not hating on anyone, heck I do it too, it's just funny to me. And I sure am hopeful that the Ks will come for Stewart and Arcia is young enough to redeem himself (at least at the plate), but they seem a bit like reduced value trade chips right now. I wouldn't be thrilled to buy them as an opposing GM. In any event, unless I'm really sure Wieters is very healthy and will be worth his contract for at least the first 3 years, I'm probably looking elsewhere. I don't have the stomach to trade what would be needed for Lucroy (but I'm definitely talking to the Brewers to know for sure). I actually like the Alex Avila thought from Doc. Good platoon option, plug it in for a year, and re-evaluate next offseason.
