Twins (TBD) vs Tigers (Gipson-Long): 6/27/25, 6:10pm

That's me...I've gone from Jax is not clutch, to Jax is a god, to Jax is not clutch. I will say no more, but wish him well--he really confuses me. Nice win! -

The Twins displayed some real character today: after a long. long rain delay with the card games. and cat naps, and uncertainty whether the game would even be played, they came out in the muddy, damp drear, before just a handful of stalwart fans, and got the job done. That's character! In 1960 John Updike wrote: "Williams is the classic ballplayer of the game on a hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill." Well, the Twins did well on an uninspiring day near the end of a horrible month of baseball...let's hope that what it took to do so can carry them on to bigger and better things.

I'm tired of the Johan Duran as closer show. He's not been in a groove for some time and he provides far too many boneheaded moments such as the 2 bizarre HBPs in the 9th. He looks like he's learning a new off-speed pitch or something. Give him the 7th for now. A modest proposal: put Jax at closer...give it a try. I have been critical of Jax as a pitcher with superior stuff who folds too often in the clutch, but I willing to eat some crow after his masterful 7th inning tonight. Man, he was magnificent, and the strikeout of Raleigh was sublime! He put down the top of the Mariners' order in 13 pitches while striking out two good hitters including the phenom Raleigh. What a shame to waste a great comeback and Jax's 7th tonight. Maybe we finish one off tomorrow?

Doc, you never know. I did find the PH kind of strange, especially late in the game given Castro's defensive liabilities. Actually, Kody seems to be just the guy you need at the plate if you are looking for a medium-deep fly ball at any given time.

For your Minnesota Twins: over one-third of tonight's at bats were taken by players with a .193 average, batting average...and neither Bride nor Keirsey saw action. Seattle's three lowest batting average, averages (I did that again!) tonight came out to .242. And Wentz is atrocious...no, he really is. I know, I know...he's a lefty. Arrrggghhhh! The season has gone beyond sad now, to some nether world that I cannot name.

Mariners (Woo) vs Twins (Ober): 6/23/25, 6:40pm

I don't believe that this lame duck ownership team is going to go to the trouble of searching for and paying a new manager AND paying the rest of Baldelli's salary--I think the club exercised his option for 2026, yes? He could (and may) lose 50 more in the second half of the season and not be fired under the existing circumstances. -

T & R, I love your analysis of Wallner. A few games ago a single fell in front of him that I felt the character in Damn Yankees could have gotten to even after having been turned back from young Joe Hardy into old Joe Boyd! At this point (27) his fielding is nothing to write home about and he's a .200ish pop up and K machine who hits an occasional, and often magnificent, moon shot to the terrace in right! I hope he hits his stride soon, but as hard as it is to say, he may have reached his peak already..."so we beat on."

Brewers (Misiorowski) vs Twins (Ryan): 6/20/25, 7:10pm
knothole61 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Irish, we also have to add the 14-3 loss on June 5 to the A's...thus, in the last 14 games the Twins have managed to lose by scores of 14-2, 16-4, 16-3, and now 17-6. I know what's at work here and I'm frankly quite sick of it. When games get out of hand all that matters to Rocco (and I'm sure many here on TD) is that effort is not wasted, pitchers are not strained, and players do not risk injury in a hopeless cause. So reasonable and rational, eh? Well I hate it. Have some pride...have enough respect for the game, and yourselves, to fight hard to quell the rout. Draw a line and say no more. Risk an injury, strain a few pitchers, but build a rock-hard resolve that will serve you far better during difficult times than the rationality of the rag doll that you are practicing. -
Love that win! I think we'll have our hands full with the Brewers in town though. Milwaukee should have close to (or more than?) 50% of the crowd and they have been playing very well for weeks. If that's not enough, we will face their fireballing phenom on Friday night and on Saturday...wait for it...a lefty! But at least it should be exciting and I'll hope for the best.

The sad stretch continues...but wasn't it nice to see Buxton return (none the worse for wear) after that potentially devastating HBP that kept him out of the game in Houston on Sunday. Heaven only knows what might have happened if Buxton (and his .850 OPS!) had been forced to pinch hit to start the 10th last Sunday with a sore elbow? But hey, he's so much better now: "wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles!"

We have just experienced two days of excellent pitching, (except for the All-Star closer-yes) especially in that crazy Houston bandbox; and two losses that could easily have been wins with even a modicum more of offense...just a modicum! It's hard to blame Rocco when the batters are so lame. But I do damn his intractability regarding his frequent "cautionary rest days." When he sits Buxton, for example, he has no intention of allowing him to come in late in a game to pinch run or hit with the game on the line. He just won't do it! Today, Buxton should have hit in the 10th...he's having a great season and he's a real threat at bat right now. Rocco does some things well, but his utter inability to throw caution to the wind (even just a bit) drives me crazy. Hey SWR, great job today!

A competitive game against an excellent SP, from a team that has been reeling--I'll take that as a good sign. Now, maybe the Twins and Adam Scott can provide Father's Day presents tomorrow?

Every MLB season is of course "a long, strange trip," filled with peaks and valleys...but the Twins I fear may be heading for Death Valley at this point. In order to salvage 2025, in my humble opinion, the Twins will need to dig in their heels right now and find a way to win 8 of the next 12 before heading into Detroit for 3. And yes, given the pitching implosion and the freshly injured Lewis, etc., that seems impossible--and yet, it is possible. So, I'll pin my hopes on that and take things a day at a time. Pollyanna

Great win...and Buxton was in All-Star form! Help me out here: I'm calling on the more prosaic, stat-centered folks herein to try to make some sense of this for me. I believe that we're being plagued during the telecasts of late with stats that seem (to one such as me) to be absolutely meaningless. I'm wondering if I'm missing something, or if maybe the producers are just giving AI free rein to pop meaningless stats on the screen without considering their merit. This evening, we were told, was the first time since 2016 that Buxton has had a walk, a home run, and a double in a game. Even more meaningless, I think, a couple of games ago we were informed that we had just seen the first instance since 1975 that a Twins' catcher and third baseman had hit back-to-back homers in a game. What am I missing?

Patzky, Love you man, but can you please switch out that awful emblem--it's reminiscent of something I might have seen in a fevered dream during the summer of 1968! How about a bucolic scene of some sort? The verdant hilltop at Machu Picchu might be nice. -
So nice to beat the Jays...they came in hot and they have tough, pesky hitters throughout their lineup. We won't see them again until the end of August in Toronto. That should be enough time to recover.

Jax is a very touchy subject for some...almost like abusing the flag, which of course you should never do! He has some incredible stuff and his spin and blah, blah, numbers are apparently to die for. And, you have to give him credit because his last few appearances have been wonderful. But...and here's the big but...he seems, to this not-so-casual observer, to be more prone to psych-outs than some; to giving in to pressure in high leverage situations, that is. I can't quote chapter and verse, but it's been my impression of him all along that in the 8th inning or later (I think he did blow a close situation earlier in the season-yes?) with the game tied or with a one-run lead things have, on a regrettable number of occasions, ended up exactly like today. I think he's quite talented and I like him as a player very much--his failures are hard to watch. But, at this stage in his career, I wouldn't call him a clutch performer.
