  1. Didn't catch that one. Thanks for reminding me of something to cheer about.
  2. It's fun to have Aggie and Joe Nathan right next to each other, and the same for the Nettles brothers. I think Yankee fans would be shocked at how low Graig Nettles was ranked as a Twin.
  3. Yeah, I was surprised at the Ron Davis rating myself, but also pleased that this list has some distance from our gut reactions. Nice job, and, overall, the list leaves me with good memories of guys I cared about.
  4. Same here. Pirates have been my favorite NL team since 1971. Used to hate the Orioles, but time heals most (1969/70) wounds. And it's a "banner" year for Baltimore with the War of 1812 commemorations and all.
  5. I distinctly remember seeing positives in the 1990 Twins, also. It was more of a gut feeling that pitching and defense were a whole lot better despite the dismal won-lost record.
  6. I sometimes wonder if there isn't a different standard for stars and superstars as far as "softness" goes. They are, after all, a bigger investment, and keeping them from getting a further or more serious injury is a part of protecting that investment. I remember how Rod Carew's teammates grumbled about his taking himself out of the linueup for injuries. It may have all been true, but he and team management had more of an interest in prolonging his career. A marginal player, or even an average-to-good player, doesn't have that luxury. He wants to keep his job and his place in the lineup. It doesn't apply to all stars (some Torii Hunter types will continue to crash into walls), but it may be a reality, even more in this era of huge, multiyear contracts than in Carew's day.
  7. Really, hats off to John Farrell. Let's face it, neither Perk nor Suzuki are superstars, and the fact that he planned that final battery was really moving to me. He also announced it during a game interview, so I knew I actually had to stay up for the whole game! (I'm on Eastern time, if that's an excuse). I'll always think well of Farrell.
  8. I'm bringing this up for the first time, only because I don't want Blackjack to be "barbecued." Years ago, I heard stories--at the time--from an on-the-ground source of what Morneau's minor league teammates thought of him, and it could not be worse. So, yes, it has been hard for me to embrace him they way other Twins fans have. I do believe in transformation, and I do believe he has changed. If it wasn't a religious conversion, I'd have to give Joe Mauer a lot of credit for this. But don't be hard on Blackjack; he's not wrong.
  9. Love it, SouthernMiss! Stick around with us. I hope Doz is with us a long time!
  10. I get it, and I'm with you on this, John. Before I came to TD, I never paid attention to the minor leaguers until they came to spring training with a good chance to make the Show (well, the exception may be when our future stars are so highly regarded that they are a major story in Sports Illustrated!). I hope that doesn't make me a bad fan, but that's the way I am. I do tend to remember the past teams and players with both joy and tears.
  11. Thanks, everybody, for keeping me around after that beginning. We have a beautiful day in NJ.
  12. I did kinda get into the soccer game after all, but I went to a quieter place.
  13. I count 16 TVs in this sports bar in Manhattan: 15 are tuned to the World Cup match, one to the Yanks- Twins. I don't hate soccer, but enough already.
  14. Nah, I don't hate the White Sox. First of all, when Ozzie managed them, he gave us all sorts of compliments, "piranhas," and all that. One of my good friends and weekly tennis partner is a devout ChiSox fan; like me, it goes back to childhood and has always been a long distance affair. We have more in common than separates us. I was happy for him when they finally won in '05. No, we don't watch crucial games together, but I still remember the time he called me rather late to tell me that Liriano was working on a no-hitter for the Twins in the 9th, and he put the phone to his computer so I could listen.
  15. Now that you mention it, my mom was singing the praises of her physical therapist just tonight.
  16. Is it time to stop fearing the Yankees? (We won't count tomorrow, given the match-up). At least as long as SpiritofVodkaDave doesn't go to the games (he's the one with the terrible track record, far worse than mine).
  17. Three home runs is a season high for us? That's what the Yankee TV announcers just said.
  18. I'm good luck--just tuned in with Hammer at bat! Here in NYC I turned on the New York Rangers game on the radio last night the second they scored the only goal.
  19. Thanks for this. I think you are on to something, but even those who may not agree with everything you said can appreciate these observations.
  20. Good news...although I work in a library.
  21. Hey, me too--as in, I wear my red late '70s Twins cap on softball fields in NYC. It's quite a conversation starter because baseball fans know it's old. I guess I'll know who you are if I run into you! As for loyalties, I asked myself that question during the contraction discussion. I've concluded that you can't force a rooting interest, it just has to "flow," and it can surprise you where your emotions lead. The only New York team that I truly care about is the New York Rangers. Go Rangers!
  22. Well, thanks, I appreciated the little story. Baseball Chapel is quite an old organization, and a lot of fine fellows (and "good guy" Twins) have been involved in it.
