Remember that game…an afternoon game, I think, and I was walking home from work here in NYC, stopping in electronics stores to watch on their TV’s.

Oh, yikes, with Kirby out, it’s a new game. I don’t have that big a rooting interest, but it’s good baseball.

Yankee radio announcer says, “Varland must be shaking now.” Suzyn Waldman replies, “Well, of course, he’s been pitching in Minnesota”. (But I did see him make his debut in Yankee Stadium last year)

Not kidding; I just turned the game on the radio now, thinking, “oh great, let’s see what Varland can do.”

Look, Gardner was just a good-natured placeholder allowing the players who were called up too early to mature. I have good memories of him for that subjective reason. So I’d rank Miller, Baldelli, and Quilici below him.

Had to get very wet, wait a long time, and leave in the 6th inning, but still satisfying to be at Yankee Stadium tonight.

Kinda sad that the last time I was at Yankee Stadium, I saw Louis Varland make his major league debut and I was excited about it.
