  1. Listened to Falvey on the SKOR North Twins Show podcast on 7/10. I'm going to paraphrase from memory here, but essentially he said that - because of the hard July 31st deadline date - sellers are more likely to lower their asking price the closer to the deadline they wait to pull the trigger. My positive side says "That's smart shopping." My neutral sid says "But don't wait too long." And my negative side says "So you're going to let the other teams get the good pitchers to win this year; take the third- or fourth-tier leftovers; and be happy with a first-round elimination, losing three straight to whichever team takes Bumgartner or Stroman."
  2. Twins need another lefty in the bullpen for a deep playoff run. Trading within the division is a tough sell/buy. Go hard for Smith first, Vasquez second, Watson third.
  3. No depressed Minnesota baseball fan's ears would fail to perk up at the sound of the weird "beer."
  4. And Miami - the worst team in the NL; 4th worst team in MLB - has outscored Milwaukee 24-3 in taking the first two games of their series. Maybe this is the statistical week MLB is punishing the good teams and rewarding the meek?
  5. Never what you want to read about anyone in this sport, regardless of what team they play on. I know the term "thoughts and prayers" has almost become a joke online, but in a case like this where it is literally the only thing a non-doctor can do to help a stranger... Thoughts and prayers to him, his family, and his teammates.
  6. An early nomination for "Homerun Call of The Year" goes to Jack Morris's laugh and Dick Bremer's silent reaction to Eddie Rosario's two-run homer in the 7th tonight. Sometimes the crowd reaction is response enough.
  7. Me on Tuesday, after the Twins hit two more homeruns to push their season total to 90 on May 21st: "Ok, slow down guys. You need to save some of those homeruns for later in the season." Me on Thursday, after they hit eight more: "OK, apparently you've all got plenty of homeruns to spare. Keep hitting them I guess." Miguel Sano has four homeruns in his first six games?!?
  8. Those bastards! Going to lose more than twice in one week... I just hate them so much.
  9. Other area for concern from this last week: runners left in scoring position. Seems the Twins aren't doing so hot with the clutch hitting - two-out hits with runners on are were noticeably lacking in the Detroit series - and is something they're going to have to figure out for days they fail to hit six homeruns.
  10. No mention/update on Goodrum delivering a UFC-style knockout knee to the head of Marwin Gonzalez in the 6th? It was a fine attempt on Niko's part to try and reel in a terrible throw by pitcher Ross, but it was a scary moment. Hearing Morneau in the booth have flashbacks to Toronto 2010 was spooky.
  11. I remember when Detroit was dominating the Central and signed Prince Fielder. This required Miguel Cabrera to move back to 3rd base, which weakened Detroit's defense on the left side but added 55 homeruns over the two years Fielder manned first. Detroit went to the World Series the first year, and the ALCS the second year. The only retort Twins fans were able to give were, "Cabrera manning 3rd? Oh boy, I can't wait to see Ben Revere bunt on him all game long!"
  12. Homer Simpson: "That's right, it's called a Flaming Hom..." Felix Olivo: "Felix. A Flaming Felix. I invented it and my name is Felix, that's why it's called a Flaming Felix."
  13. And Rosario doesn't appear to be letting this bother him. He laughed off both Reddick's diving catch and the liner to short. He knows it is bad-luck, and that has to change.
  14. Yankees are only 8-7 at home this year, and are 0-5 when playing teams with better-than .500 records. Twins are 8-5 on the road, and are 11-3 when playing teams with a sub-.500 record. I've shot past "cautiously-optimistic" and am expecting a Twins sweep (or, at worst, two-of-three) this weekend in the Bronx.
  15. Preferably a pitcher we trade for at the end of July?
  16. A 1-0 pitcher's duel may be boring for some casual baseball fans who just want to watch homeruns... for someone who works many games at Target Field, a 2 hour-15 minute game is wonderful (particularly when the Twins win.)
  17. There's going to be a team somewhere, at some point, who needs a major league-ready catcher to start yesterday.
  18. When Sano comes back, it'll be a bench of Garver, Astudillo, and Gonzalez. The only way that changes is if Castro can't get into the "swing" of things and he is out-played by Garver and Astudillo; at that point, it because a bench of Garver/Astudillo, Gonzalez, and Castro. Castro does not have the versatility of those three, and quickly becomes the dispensable piece of the bench/roster.
  19. The Twins have more batters with a positive "HBP" in their stats than homeruns. And that includes Cruz. Not complaining; plenty of balls hit this series that would have been homeruns in June (Polanco, Austin, and Garver) and as long as the Twins are winning, keep those HBP coming I guess? Not sure how to make that connection.
  20. Buxton's double was a moment of relief, but his catch against the wall in (I believe) the 5th showed more what the Twins were missing for most of 2018: his glove, his speed, and his game-changing outfield defense. Ball seemed to not carry as well yesterday as last year. I think if it was warmer Kepler may have started the game with a homerun and added an extra base hit later (the flyout that Buxton tagged on to go to third.)
  21. Is Austin on the Opening Day roster in the hopes that they can sneak him through waivers in a few weeks when all of the other MLB rosters should hopefully be set with no room for anyone to claim him? Unless Cruz or Cron go down or struggle mightily in April, his redundancy makes him the first on the chopping block come either Sano's return or Perez's move to the starting rotation.
  22. That will be the best problem the Twins could have this year or any year. In 1991 the Twins played Chili Davis in Game 5 in Atlanta in place of the slumping Shane Mack in a futile 14-5 loss, so ultimately it didn't mean much.
  23. Max Kepler will become the German Jacque Jones. (1-0, pronounced "Eins-Null.")
  24. There's a reason ballet dancers wear slippers. All blame goes to the maker of baseball cleat shoelaces.
