  1. A 40 year old player that father time finally caught up to is not in high demand. The Twins did receive cash. About what you would get to pay for 1/2 of a rule 5 player. That would be about right for a trade.
  2. I am well aware of what rankings mean. If you read jokin's post he would have you believe the Twins took in dog poop for star players. From said organizations, Ryan may have received their better players from the organization. A concept of best trade appears to be very lost on the readers here. To Ryan the best trade is maybe what the most he got out of he could for a player. Erickson's value was at a low as it could be as someone speculated. Someone else speculated that no one else may have really wanted Erickson as he was to also be a free agent. Ryan probably had to do a lot of work selling that one. That why to him it was his best July trade. A steal like Kielty for Stewart was easy.
  3. Frankie Rodriguez was rated at 39 best baseball prospect at that time. The Red Sox also sent JJ Johnson who was a top 10 prospect in their system at one time. Hansell and Parra were both in the 10 ten prospects for the Dodgers. Bartee who was received as TPTBNL in the Erickson trade was rated as the 8th best prospect in the Oriole at that time. Would the lesson from those trades be then don't trade your veterans for highly ranked prospects?
  4. While the fact might be lost on the fan, I think any baseball GM could realize the odds of Derosa continuing as a 150 ERA+ pitcher are slim. The 130listed was over a very partial season. The information on Sanchez was to provide context at what level career wise a fairly decent pitcher would have for an ERA + at a nearly similar age , just to jar you a little bit to see that the 150 is not sustainable. I'm done with you on this subject.
  5. Have Gardenhire become bilingual over winter. Maybe his many unloyal followers can buy him a learning tape. https://www.pimsleurapproach.com/search261/learn-a-language.asp?sid=10077exSpan_L10WQ_261_Vid_bing&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=learn%20spanish%20in%20a%20month&utm_campaign=bing_spanishsearch&utm_content=learnspanishexact
  6. If Pelfrey continues to pitch like he has this month the final results may resemble is 08 and 10 seasons. That puts him at around 2.5 WAR. $13 million wouuld be about right. If he pitches like 09 and 11, then move the decimal point left one position and multiply by 3.1. That number might be closer to what he should get, from another team. It will be interesting to watch a salary drive.
  7. How many of those 8/9 innings were when the club was losing? 154 career games. 36 career holds, 12 blown saves, 106 games where he then would have been filler. Arrietta had 3 1/2 seasons with declining numbers. Yes he was a top 100 prospect. So was Adam Johnson. The Twins approach in signing players without a contract is what it is. Patchwork.
  8. No. If you want to emulate someone else, pick a winning organization. Pure and simple. They were winners before there was a thing called competative balance picks. Never said, nor hinted that the team was a little market who could. Never crossed my mind. So what if the team is closer to a large market team than a small. If you are a winning organization you do not have to sign someone to your roster in hopes of getting a prospect or two. The better scenario is you gain prospects while giving an aged veteran a chance to play regularly again, That is, the talent you developed has pushed someone to the bench midseason.
  9. Did that one competitive balance pick help them win on average 90 games a year since the turn of the century? You have done better arguments than that. In looking how an organization is built and maintained you can look at St Louis. That ONE competitive pick is not the reason they have done well
  10. A sixth ininng reliever, and a pitcher in AAA. Ryan can find those all on his own without needing to trade a pitcher with an ERA+ of 114 to do so.
  11. The end result is the Cubs are still a 90 loss team, with a very slight improvement in team FIP. Big moves if you like, same results. woo hoo.
  12. To the Cubs fans on this board. Epstient took over a club that was consistently finishing in second place, not a 90+ loss team. He refined a winning team, not built it. If you want a model for the Twins to follow, try the Cards. Develop your talent. Trade for a little, FA a little. Same for the Reds. Comparing how the Twins should work to a large market team is folly.
  13. In order od need on position players SS,and 2B. Consider 3B, CF. If you are going into the season with an at best league average pitching staff I would think to be competitive you would need closer to a top 5 offense. If you believe that Plouffe could be good, the you need some on base potential at the top out of SS or 2B. The Twins really did not have that, nor was it readily available on the free agent market without giving up more runs on defense.
  14. It is not a question of wanting the Twins to spend the money or not but the realization that there was not much out there worth spending the money on. The many detractors thread after thread keep stating the Twins are cheap. They didn't spend money. On and on. Paying for a mediocre player is not going to elevate the team to contending status. It is not going to lift it to .500. So it is not twisting your argument. You can say they should have spent the money on very good players so they have a better team. That is very true. The reality the detractors choose to ignore is that where this team needed to improve in position players there were none. There were only a few of top of the rotation pitchers. So if pointing out to you that the detractor position is a weak position because of reality is twisting facts, so be it.
  15. What should have they spent the money on? Good hitting middle infielders that can field their postions? That didn't exist then, doesn't know. You think that Grienke, Dempster, and/or Sanchez were going to come here? Pipe dream at best. Do you think any of the other pitchers were really going to elevate the team from the depths and become a stud pitcher? Prove any of them would have taken this team to a competive level
  16. If they trade for a middling prospect and pay salary for these players I would ask this question. Is the prospect you are buying worth a fee of however many multi million dollars. If it is a pure salary dump that you are doing, then give the players away and buy yourself a boatload of Cuban players with the money that wasn't spent on salary this year. It might be a better crapshoot. Can they frontload a contract? The Twins already 20-40 million under budgetable money this year for salaries. That should buy a Cuban player
  17. The Twins provide the RedWings their players. They all work for the Mn Twins. They are under contract with the Twins
  18. I do not disagree with you. Shortstop was one of the areas of need pointed out last winter. Free agency would be a way to go to fix that problem. Drew was the highest ranked available ss. Would the spend because you have it crowd noticed that there was no reeal difference in cotribution between the free agent and the scap heap player? Dozier is outplaying any of the 2b FA options. Somebody in the FO is either smart or should pick my lottery numbers for me.
  19. As Deduno was free to sign with any team. No ther team wanted him. The 5th starter competition was wide open. Deduno was injured, else he could have won it in spring. When he got healthy, got up to strength, he was called up. How quickly people forget. Others on here spend countless hours complaining the Twins don't sign free agents. There were no middle infielders worth signing other than Drew. Even with that, the best Drew could get was a one year deal. Free agent pitching has been hashed over some many times by the detractors that the APA will have a new diagnosis for them for their persistence. The reality of the thinness of the free agent crop and Ryan being able to judge that is ignored. Yes he could not sign Sanchez. If you thought there was enough money out there to get Sanchez here, you are sadly mistaken. How much money would it take to get a person to move up to the Upper Pensilua
  20. With hindsight and the pitchers selected in the earlier post you can see from the pitchers possibly available Ryan did not kake a mistake by signing them. He did not fix the hole in the roster by what he signed, nor would have he if he had signed these.
  21. Everyone here argues with hindsight
  22. I love it when someone uses a stat like fip as a justification for something other than a relative comparison between to players. 1/2 of Correias games will not be a mythical nuetral park but at Target Field where he has performed well enough to have a 3.34 ERA. His fip will always suck because his a pitch to hopefully weak contact type of pitcher. This response is not to say anything of Correia being anything other than a guy who throws a ball every fifth day and your stat has a limitation.
  23. It is not a personal attack to counterpoint a position. The definition of a major free agent signing is a debateable topic. Those that set the bar higher and realize the few that are out there worth signing get criticized. God forbid what would happen to you if you even hint that a major free agent player might not want to sign here under the current situation. It is not dismissal of aquiring and retaining a major talent to point out the Twins have very few upper level prospects that would bring back a major talent.
  24. Could you please give an example of a team effectively rebuilt through free agency in the last 5 years?
