  1. The MO of the Twins is to wait and see. When they strayed they got burned.
  2. Thanks for the link. I hope tonight I get a good laugh from the previous comment
  3. After September first the roster expands, so it really doesn't matter which 25 when they could have all 40 of them up here. Sorry to be a nit pick pr*** but there isn't a 25 man limit then so you can't artificially place one. Secondly, the Twins still have the fourth best record in the AL as the hallway point of the season draws near, you play what you have that is your best option to win this year. On a 40 man roster that really does not have a lot of age on it there are going to be a couple of younger players.
  4. Carlton, Baylor , Schatzeder, Niekro and Salvatore all had negative bwar with the Twins in 1987. As such, they can be forgetable as Tom Nieto.
  5. The average legth of a baseball career is under 5 years in baseball. For every Carlos Beltran, Matt Holiday or Tim Hudson there are going to be 3-4 players with short careers. The initial success of a player and the subsequent decline once the holes are found in the player's game. So fangraphs may not find the peak in pllayers because the effect of the short time survivor is more than they accounted for. If you are looking at a decline curve for players you would have to look at only those players with a career length greater than average because that is the kind of player you would hope Dozier and Plouffe to be.
  6. Tonkin 25 games Pressly 25 games Logan Darnell 24 IP Bang
  7. Stauffer had a known shoulder injury coming out of college. That would have an effect on his ranking and evidently his career Stauffer Signs With Padres Despite Injury By Will Kimmey August 15, 2003 Padres scouting director Bill Gayton said Tim Stauffer's makeup was one of the deciding factors when the organization used the fourth overall pick on the Richmond righthander in June. It's already paying dividends for the Padres. Stauffer and his agent, Ron Shapiro, alerted the organization during contract negotiations about a weakness in his shoulder before agreeing to a bonus of less than $1 million Thursday.
  8. Ervin Santana is the old man of the staff at 32. 5 of the 10 pitchers over 30 last year are gone. I wouldn't bet Kris Johnson (29) will be back, Swarzak (28) is gone. Adding 2 32 year olds is not making the staff older in comparison to what they jettisoned
  9. By Baseball America Stauffer was the 4th best prospect of the Padres after being drafted, 5th best after he played a year, then fell out of the top 10. He never made Baseball America's top 100 in those years. Only one Padre did. At best he was the 104 best prospect. With a B- grade, very highly doubt he even cracked a top 200 list. He was the 4th pick in 2003. Delmon was first followed by Richie Weeks then Kyle Sleeth.
  10. While people chimed in about confirming what they thought about age in this article, they missed that these later in the draft choices produced a better warp than most systems.
  11. Did ANYWHERE in the post I say rookies shouldn't come up if they struggle. Quite the contrary in that I stated he pitched long enough to get an idea what he needed to learn to be successful. I am sorry I sould have used more words to explain my idea for you, for you clearly missed what I was getting at. Gibson did not pitch so well in his time up in the majors in 2013 that anyone should complain that he was held back because of AAAA pitchers and piters on the disabled list. He had time to struggle a bit to make the adjustments but not so much time to crush any confidence he had, if a 5+ ERA would ruin his belief in himself. Learning did happen as Gibson had a fine 2014. It is quite possible that the Twins brain trust handled Gibson appropriately. Nice straw man Levi
  12. Nolasco had a career high BABIP. The number of line drives, ground balls and fly balls were about the same as always. ERA tanked. Do you think maybe there was a little problem with outfield defense?
  13. in 2013 Gibson wasn't in spring training to win a spot on the roster. . I would think that you are also forgeting that Gibson had not pitched many innings the year before, he would be on an innings limit, and that no rookie was going to come out of spring tranning with those conditions and pitching as poorly as he was. When he did get up here, he pitched enough innings to get an idea of what it takes as well as displaying he needed to get that idea by the following spring or be back in Rochester. Also, I would think most fans could remember that Cole DeVries was on the dl, and the immortal PJ Walter pitched about as well as Gibson did
  14. How short memories are. The Dodgers traded for Nolasco on a stretch run. So I guess that would be one contending team that wanted a Nolasco. Milone, The Phillies went out and got Jamie Moyer for a stretch run. Gibson is developing. Smyly and Porcello were developed at the back of Detroit's rotation. When they got further developed, look at the return Detroit got.
  15. Taking almost 5 years to get through most of the levels of the minor leagues is rushing a prospect?
  16. You lost me once you claimed Beckham was rushed to the majors. He had success in the minors and had multiple years to show what he was capable of at the major league level. . Beckham had a good first year in the majors. He regressed and years later did not get back to previous levels. There is no rushing because spending only a short time in the minors.
  17. Any player should be tradebait if the price is right.
  18. Hmm. Tewksbury miht have been washed up but his ERA was under 4.5 Rick Porcello was mentioned as a trade target and his career ERA is within what Tewksbuy's was. Just a nitpick. Look over the list of players that are free agents. When Hunter was signed what other option was there on the market. At the end of the year in hindsight you could point to an all star team of inexpensive players. What inexpensive rf should have they taken? Hunter had a poor series against the Angels, every other series he was more than respecable. To denigrate Hunter because the team sucked is a needless attempt to manipulate without using fact.
  19. When defensive metrics encompase all aspects of defense I would imagine ball players will embrace them. As of now they pretty much only count how much area they can cover and if they can catch the ball. I think there is a little more to defense than that. Even in terms of catching the ball, Parker refers to inside edge statistics. They have a catagory called impossible catches that are made. Some have more than others. The numbers for some are significantly more than others and are significant to the number of plays a fielder makes. If the player makes the play, it is not impossible. When the stats type people get a brillian idea and figure it out a better way to measure defense, the players will believe as much as they do in offensive measurements.
  20. The last pitching coach turned manager in Minnesota the problem was personality more than knowledge. Farell was a pitching coach. Does a retty good job. Perhaps the makeup of a good pitching coach is different than whatit takes to manage
  21. Depends on how the payer played the game. Not evey player is going to be cerebral, nor pay atention to what other positions do. There have been a few outfieldes here that have not lived up to their draft position that I would doubt they unerstand metrics, infield play, or pitching (besides swing and miss)
  22. I would think that major league ready could be defined as the player has the tools to learn what to do at the major league level. They would also think it would mean the player will show the ability to adjust, adapt, and overcome.
  23. a 6-1 loss is no different than a 2-1 loss. Casey Fien not getting a batter out sooner led to the 4 runs. In the end the difference of four more runs was inconsequential except to the season's statics for the Royal player. They may need every bit of leverage an extra bump up in their statistics they can get. Their agents might think the Royals use OPSBI
  24. Sign any low risk high reward player you can. The emphasis is high reward as oposed to mediocre reward.
  25. I like the old stories of players having to point at a picture on the menu to order food. The Nishi experiment is probably why they want their players to become bilingual. And yes it would be beneficial if the coaches could learn enough spanish to be able to chew them out in no uncertain terms in their own language.
