  1. Agrred. Like I said, Florimon will probably be acceptable through the 2015 season, but not on a contending team.
  2. Wow. We get 80 comments in to a piece about a 26 year-old player who, by virtually every scouting report is NOT a MLB-calibre SS, and who may or may not have a higher ceiling than Rosario and Polanco. So let me get this straight. His price tag is around $26M? And we absolutely NEED to go outside the system for a SS, but not a 2B. I'm not gonna rip them for passing on this guy, if that happens. I'm gonna rip them if they don't take a serious crack at finding a high-ceiling SS prospect or two. I don't care if it comes from the draft, the international market, a trade, free agency, or Cuba. But they need to find someone much better than Florimon by the start of 2016, when they're back in contending mode. Trea Turner would work.
  3. OK, now THIS is funny!
  4. This was a joy to read, Brad. Thank you.
  5. It appears to me that they'll need to go outside the system for a shortstop by 2016 at the latest, as Florimon won't cut it as the SS on a contender. Perhaps a catcher too, if Pinto and Herrmann don't cut it, which is fairly likely. Maybe Kepler will have a breakout year and solidify himself as the 1B of the future. It appears to me that Plouffe and Parmelee will both be expendable in 2014. Let's hope for B grade Class A pitching as the return.
  6. It's possible the Twins simply view both Florimon and Dozier as acceptable placeholders given the current state of progress in improving the whole mess. My guess is that the two hold the fort until Rosario proves he's completely ready (he's not right now) and a solution from outside the organization is found for SS. By the time the other pieces are (hopefully) in place in 2015, they'll be less accepting of Florimon's production on offense, and they'll have tradable assets with which to solve the problem.
  7. I'm curious about the depth of talent internationally. The Twins "only" signed one of the top 20 rated prospects as rated by BA. Does anyone know which of our other top international prospects were rated among the top 20? Arcis, Polanco, Landa, Jorge, Randy Rosario, Danny Santana, Danny Ortiz, etc?
  8. A half dozen really really really bad choices.
  9. My guess would be Cleveland had Lindor, Detroit had Castellanos, and KC had Ventura and Zimmer?
  10. This is possibly the most encouraging thing of all.
  11. The truly safe assumption is that our media pals will not ask the tough questions.
  12. I don't believe the expansion of their international scouting was reactionary rather than strategic, but it certainly was due to an assessment that the international market was increasingly fertile. And I would guess their Dominican operation is still not a top tier program. Sure wish our mainsteam media people who probe this stuff once in awhile.
  13. Reusse's point is on the mark. IMO, the jury's still out on the decision-making in the international market from 2009 to the present. The top 25 prospect list for the pro scouts is probably quite different, so I'm not ready to get outraged unless they don't spent their allotment. And last year, they spent their wad and landed two guys in the media's top 25 in Minier (#7) and Silva (#22?), and also signed Thorpe. I don't know if Landa, Jorge, and Rosario were ranked highly or not, but, aggressve or not, we seem to be holding ourown. But it sure would be nice to see a balls-out display by Ryan once in awhile, like now.
  14. How dumb would you have to be to spend $9 for a glass of beer? You'd never catch Jim Pohlad doing that.
  15. What's nice about these names is that they are all pitchers, shortstops (we think) or catchers for the most part. All areas of need.
  16. You're really reaching on that one greegoblin. He didn't say he ONLY cares about wins, and you know there are some statheads who think the mere mention of wins is satanic.
  17. I'd guess the key phrase is "all the available information". We have to remember that the pro staff in CR has years of development experience. They see the kid every day, on and off the field. We won't know if they're saying he's not ready with every aspect of his game, but it's possible they believe he still needs a little more time, and who are we to argue, right?
  18. What makes me happy is a comparison of many of the names from 2009 who were thought to be among our Top 10 or 20. Salcedo, Hermsen, Bashore, Morales, Tosoni, Benson, Hughes, Valencia, Slama, Gutierrez, Bullock, Benson, Bromberg, and Guerra all made at least one person's Top Ten list. Of course, others who made a Top 10 list from 2009 include Plouffe, Ramos, Gibson, Revere, Parmelee, Hicks, Sano, and Kepler. No one ranked Arcia or Dozier higher than #25 back then, and a lot of guys who became serviceable players were not ranked at all, like Duensing, Casilla, and Mijares. I'm not sure what this tells us, except that when the current guys are in a top-ranked farm system and the 2009 guys were not, we probably have a damn good reason to be excited.
  19. The Twins ARE all over the top talent, Red Bull. They have been every year since 2009. Their record stacks up favorably against anyone's over this time frame, both in terms of spending and in terms of results. BA and MLB do not have a monopoly on talent evaluation. In fact, they're at a massive disadvantage to the myriad of scouts employed by the MLB teams, upon whom they rely for the snippets they use to make their rankings. So, Red Bull, unless you've personally scouted all these guys and have a real nose for talent, exactly how can you make the statement that the Twins are passing on talent? And with their exceptional track record on spending, your credibility on the "going cheap" stuff is zero. Maybe less.
  20. Those are the kinds of things that we don't see in the box score that explain why players remain at their current level.
  21. Yeah, we all lament the Luis whatshisname trade every day. We dumped a superlative turf-playing gold glove .300 hitter who would clearly not have declined drastically right away like he did had we just kept him. That darn Ryan anyways. He never does anything right. That trade has been haunting us for years.
  22. Feldman was a smart pickup by the Cubs. Very smart.
