  1. My perpetual GM blueprint would call for ALWAYS being a seller for prospects at the trade deadline, even when we are in contention. Frankly, I wouldn't care if it was Parmelee either, as long as the Rangers overpaid. I mean really really overpaid.
  2. It wouldn't completely surprise me if the Twins' bully ranked in the top third in the AL in team ERA this season. That's how fickle things can be. And think of the surplus of arms in Rochester, all of them only slightly "worse" candidates: Gutierrez, Guerra, Burnett, Waldrop, Slama, Fien, Manship, Robertson, Oliveros... I hope they are sellers (for prospects only) at the trade deadline. Frankly, I'd "dangle" the whole 40-man roster to see if someone will overpay for something...
  3. jmlease, excellent post! And Fanatic Jack, perhaps it isn't a question of us "protecting" the Pohlads. Maybe we disagree with your incredibly negative opinions. I recall, in 1987, many negative opinions when they marched out Les Straker as the #3 starter. Les friggin' Straker! I could probably find you a post or two from that spring proclaiming a distinct possibility of that rotation have the potential of going down as the WORST ROTATION IN BASEBALL HISTORY!!!
  4. Rochester may be good this year. Hendriks, Bromberg, Stuifbergen, Diamond, DeVries; Guttierrez, Guerra, Burnett, Waldrop, Robertson, Slama, Manship. And Benson, Tosoni, Dozier anchoring an improved lineup.
  5. Thanks so much for the report, thrylos, and for your comments, Steve. I read Bollinger's report which had Kepler reporting to Class A+ Fort Myers. Is that possible? If so, wow!
  6. There is validity to the argument that "access" forces journalists, especially beat writers, to measure their content carefully. There are also valid complaints about how weak the beat writers are at "probing", or asking searing questions. But the access still provides insight and texture that no blogger can match. I'm a huge fan of the blogs, and find many of you to be smart, resourceful, honest, and accomplished at writing. Most of the local bloggers, however, provide little more than their own type of "parrotting", and a few are ignorant, mean-spirited hacks. This town is fortunate to have several really good bloggers such as you, John, but don't take yourselves too seriously. Beat writers and columnists produce a different product than you do, and it has absolutely nothing to do with "corporate". You have an economic component to your motivation too, don't you?
  7. Are we overvaluing the learning potential for Revere in Rochester vs. Minnesota? If he spells Willingham and Span often enough, and replaces Willingham defensively in left often enough, won't he get enough reps to improve in those areas that he has any potential for improvement? His power, even gap power, is unlikely to improve a great deal. His arm won't get much better. He will not increase his walks significantly against MLB pitching. BUT, he's a nice 4th outfielder right now despite these flaws. I want the Rochester reps to go to the underrated Tosoni and to Benson. And who knows? Any one of Hicks, Arcia, or Morales could have a monster year and be knocking at the door in Rochester. I personally don't project Revere to be much more than a 20% better version of what he is, and that's pretty good.
  8. And calling someone a fat idiot is totally classless, FJ.
  9. It all depends on what you can get for him, but I sure hope he has a great first half and they dangle him. Who knows, someone might pay give you an equivelent talent that is ready to contribute by, say 2014, when the Twins might finally have WS quality talent in place.
  10. You know Fanatic Jackass, Gardenhire has more baseball knowledge in his Class A bum than you have the capacity to accumulate in an entire lifetime. What's more, he's actually nice.
  11. Hicks was the 14th pick. Huge huge difference. I'd be delighted if they decided on Buxton if he's the best available prospect. Like everyone else, I hope one of the pitchers stands out though.
  12. Catching my breath now after chuckling over Fanatic Jack's latest hyberbolic garbage. Game 4 of fake games, and the boy musters up all that wisdom of his and declares this the worst pitching staff in all of MLB. C'mon Jack! Make it all teams anywhere in all of the entire history of the entire world.
  13. Hey Fanatic Jack, thanks for kicking off Hyperbole Day with a heretofore unequaled flourish in the entire history of mankind.
  14. Um, Graham? Like, he threw Gutierrez UNDER the bus, see? 'Cause he criticized him, right? And he praised the other players pretty much uniformly, so....um, you should try to be careful about who you throw where...
  15. Gardy had very positive comments for everyone else. Man, I hate that when he throws players over the bus.
  16. A common argument is that the Twins are taking the "cheap" route by bringing in all these "retreads". There is a glut of these has-beens, right? Well, logic would tell you to hold off until the prices go dowm, especially if your cheap SOB's like the Twins. So, explain to me why the Twins were early in signing guys, not late. To fill their allottment with the absolute cheapest guys? I really think that's what some of you believe. How about this for an alternative explanation? They did their homework and signed some guys they actually think have a chance.
  17. This might be the most ignorant, snarky pile of garbage yet written out here. Just another small person without a charitable bone in his body....
  18. The nature of most relief pitchers, yes. For the fun of it, I'd love to see a season-end comparison of the ERA, FIP, and WHIP of the five guys not named Capps and Perkins that make up this years bullpen to these five guys: Lidge, Wheeler, Coffey, Quails, and MacDougal. No prediction here, but it may demonstrate the commodity-like nature of most relief pitchers. Under or over on whether the Twins have a median bullpen ERA? I might take the under myself, given the pessimism, the shher numbers of available options and Ryan's track record.
  19. Seth, this is the question I would like to see explored. I'd agree with thrylos about separating the unsigned players. If you made a list of those players who eventually stayed on a 25-man roster for three "full" seasons or more, and then compared the numbers to some other team that fans tend to think of as superior to the Twins at drafting and developing, I wonder how the Twins would compare, even without looking at which team had the more favorable draft order. Break the tie with Hall of Famers and All-Stars.
  20. For the first time in years, fans in Rochester may have a team worth watching! That opening day roster looks about right, and Rochester should be happy with the leftovers for a change. A good sign.
