  1. One thing about Rogers being used over multiple innings for a save: The other relievers are rested for that game. So, Gibson goes seven, Rogers goes two, the rest of bullpen rests. What we are seeing is a way of creating space for other hurlers to be better once they are used. I think it's smart and will prove out, especially once 3 batter minimums are enforced in 2020: relievers are going to have to be pitchers again, not specialty guys.
  2. Twins have to score more than two runs in a game against a mediocre team throwing a bullpen game. And, they have to field better, show more intensity and generally play to win. Step it up guys.
  3. You know Santana was sitting on a curve ball. He had no chance on the hard stuff. If you want to throw a curve there, put it in the dirt.
  4. Twins got lucky tonight. Sano reaches on an error, Adrianza a walk, Kepler on an infield hit (he did hustle his way on base for sure), and Polanco gets the game-winner on a catchable ball. I'll take luck, because baseball is full of it, but, not a game they outplayed the other team.
  5. Should at least mention that Rocco has been resting his backstops, making sure they don't get run down. I will bet this becomes a new "thing" in baseball, much the way they rest pitchers to improve velocity and command. To Garver's and Castro's credit, they seem to like each other and generally "get it", which is rare enough these days. They also really smart people. All season I have been talking to friends about Odorizzi: "Really? A 94 MPH fastball riding up in the zone is unhittable in MLB all of a sudden?" Had been until recently. Where he got that swing and miss magic I will never understand. Teams that make a run in the playoffs always need two things: a rookie or two that provide an unexpected boost, and multiple guys having career-years. Twins got Harper and Arraez, and, Polanco, Kepler, Buxton, Cron, Castro, Rosario, Odorizzi and Perez making a run at each of those. You don't win games on paper so Twins need to play well, but I like our chances for sure.
  6. Buxton's play, I was at the game, surprised he went for it. Ball wasn't that deep. More often than an out, I think the ball would get by the 3B and he would score because the pitcher was backing up home. I like the aggressiveness. Who knew that would be their last chance at a run? Hilarious at the end of the 6th(?), when a strike 'em out throw 'em out on a check swing resulted in a DP and no one on the Twins realized there were three outs. Like little league -- "c'mon to the dugout boys, the inning is over".
  7. That being said, I would do all I can to keep Lewis. Think about this for a second, he's only 20 and in A+ ball. Most guys his age are in rookie ball. But a great 2018 has some of us down on him why? Because we thought/hoped he'd be in the majors at 21? Well, the really special players, Lindor, the two Atlanta sluggers, Devers, et al, they are in MLB at 19-20-21 years of age. So, I think we have learned that Lewis is not going to be one of those, and will follow his own path up the ladder. How good is his defense? How fast is he? Can he adjust his swing? If he's got Buxton tools, and a Buxton track, Twins can live with that. If he's less than that, and on a Buxton time-frame, it is time to think about what we can get for him that would better fit the current competition window.
  8. Royce Lewis batting second now? Try anything to get him off the schnide. Lots of unanticipated pitchers making big moves forward, Dobnak, Sands, Jax, Balezovic -- interesting times in the minors, and portends a plethora of options, from trades to promotions. If Twins keep the Kepler, Polanco, Buxton, Rosario, Garver, Sano and now Arraez core together, they will compete for a number of years.
  9. Time to activate Buxton and Gonzalez. Twins looked listless again last night. And so did Tampa Bay. Big time.
  10. Eighteen innings, two full games, two runs, both in the first inning of the game. One run a game, playing at home, and not a lot of chances either. One of the most disappointing results of the season, even though, at times they hit the ball hard, and, of course, no Rosie, Buxton, Gonzalez, Adrianza, Tortuga, etc. Going to need a lift from someone on this next trip or it will be a long one.
  11. Unlike the Angels, they (the Twins) have a robust analytics team, coaching staff and now have shown they are effective at using both. How long have we waited to believe that sentence to be a true statement? New guys deserve a lot of kudos, and so does the Pohlad family for making the moves after the "total system failure" of starting the 2016(?) season with 9 straight losses and ending up with the worst record in baseball.
  12. Lots of twists and turns. One thing no one mentions: Mookie Betts saved the game for Boston in the 8th on Kepler's line drive down the RF line. Watch that play. If he doesn't cut that ball off, and he made a great late snatch to get it in his glove, the ball goes to the wall and the Twins send that runner around third. How a play like that never even gets mentioned by the announcers, I can't understand. Betts=MVP, does it with his glove, only had one hit, but it was big.
  13. I was at the game and time after time, Twins' hitters did not produce. It's great when a deep team are all hitting, but when they aren't, you need a player to step forward, and that has not happened recently. As for Parker, just watching him from 3rd base side, he has to heave the ball toward the plate like he's throwing a shot put. No fluidity there, no rubber band effect. With all his might, here comes the ball, like a sailor throwing something overboard.
  14. A team always needs to play well if they want to win a game, much less sweep a series. Twins did not do that, not with the bat, not with the glove, not with the baseball on the mound. So, they're human, and in my estimation, certainly not a juggernaut. But, they are fun to watch and it's been a great season to this point.
  15. Can you imagine being a Twins' player, waking up this morning, seeing you are 23 games above .500, 10 games up in the division, destroying HR records left and right and then realizing that Tommy Milone is pitching for the Mariners tonight? That's gotta give an extra hop to your step.
  16. I am glad that I am not an announcer and don't need to say Tampa Tarpons three times fast.
  17. If Cruz is up in Yankee Stadium, and the Twins had Polanco and Kepler on base in the 9th inning, and Cruz gets called out on a pitch that far off the plate, .... c'mon, that's not good for the game of baseball. Fans would be calling for blood. That said, the Yankees do get those calls in New York. So, let's chalk that up to "earning it" by being such a good team. But, realistically, you can't make that bad of a call on such a big pitch and not diminish the game on some level.
  18. Gibson gets to two strikes and then nibbles, instead of attacking with a fastball/sinker down in the zone. Good stuff but he's got to be aggressive when he's up in the count.
  19. We think of Harper as not having a good fastball and using all his curves (sic) to get it done. But, last night, with Parker at 90-91, and Harper hitting 90, it's kind of like, "Welp, Harper throws as hard as our closer." Activate an amber alert for a bullpen arm.
  20. Cruz and Garver both had poor ABs last night. Hopefully, they will shake the rust off quickly and get up to speed.
  21. Someone post some facts on this guy. I've seen 6'0, 6'1", 6'2" and his weight ranges from 175 to 190 lbs. I know he's a pop-up guy, but is he growing with every posting? California prep player of the year. What he hit? How many SBs? What he do to win the prep award in our largest, most baseball friendly state?
  22. A person's reach should exceed their grasp, and so should a baseball team. Shoot for the stars.
  23. Worst atmosphere in MLB. Hate watching games in Tampa Bay. Not even baseball. On the other hand, Dick and Bert spent the bottom of the ninth marveling at Rogers' 2+ inning "save". These are the best baseball minds in Minnesota?
  24. C'mon guys, Taylor's pitch to Arcia was right down the pipe -- poor location. He can pitch better and likely will. If anything, he is rusty from under-use, not over-use. Against Hader, Cron had the right approach: you hit the ball hard the other way and hope for the best. Sano swung for the world, and so did Rosario. Hitch up the pants and play better next game.
