Official Twins Daily July Trade Deadline Thread
halfchest replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree and and after just glancing at Kimbrel's numbers, he's far and away the better pitcher on pretty much every level. That said I bet we would keep Perk in the closer role at least until he falters. That might be a good thing because it opens us up to using Kimbrel in the highest leverage situations without being stuck in only the 9th inning. I guess we can worry about it if it were to happen, which it probably won't- 114 replies

Official Twins Daily July Trade Deadline Thread
halfchest replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Count me in the group that would not be that upset by no major moves. I'm hopeful that at the very least they do something to pick up a decent relief arm or two. Question though, say the Twins landed Kimbrel . . . who would close? Perkins because he's our boy or Kimbrel because he's well probably even a little bit better. Either way, what a crazy backend we would have for the next few years. Damnit Jeremy, you've got my head spinning thinking of all the possibilities with San Diego- 114 replies

I did miss that game but yah I heard about it, sounded awful. The positive he's extremely young and athletic plus he spent part of last year and most of the previous two seasons attempting to convert to 2B. I'm confident he'll be a plus defender in the corners and at worst be an adequate emergency fill in for CF. I was more speaking to Hicks being a good enough bat for a corner with plenty of ability to be the backup CF though. If our outfield for the next 4-5+ years is Rosario/Buxton/Hicks we won't be seeing too many bad outfield plays like we have the last 4 years.

They Couldn’t. Could They…?
halfchest replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
hmm, not sure what to think of this. Painting it as a 3/33 deal due to offloading Nolascos contract makes it easier to stomach. However, I'd rather give up a bit more and get a younger bullpen arm that has some control left. Kimbrel would be spendy both in dollars and prospects I assume. It's another interesting story line to follow for the next couple of days though.- 47 replies

That's the rumor, we haven't seen him put there much since being up but likely due to better options in Hicks and Buxton. Agree overall though, that just gives us one more option to give Buxton the day off without needing an all glove no bat 4th outfielder.
-
Over past 30 days, Hicks trails only Mike Trout and Lorenzo Cain in CF OPS. He's at .964 over the last 30 days. I agree with those who saw something different in him this year as soon as he came up. He didn't look afraid or aloof at the plate. He was hitting the ball hard when he did but was still showing some patience. There was more than once where I thought he wasn't getting the calls on some very close pitches that could have lead to walks. Now, it's just a month but when you combine his age, recent performance, and minor league numbers he seems like a decent shot at being productive enough to be in a corner. What I love about this is when you have your backup CF playing in a corner it allows you to have a big bat as your 4th outfielder (ARCIA?) rather than a shane robinson type. A Rosario/Buxton/Hicks outfield would be insane defensively.
-
exactly, I'm pretty sure we agree on this. That they'll need to eat money in the form of either cash or a bad contract (e.g. Nolasco) in order to get a decent prospect back.
-
See and I think with his current contract they don't get anything for him unless they eat some money or take on a bad contract in return. Measure it by free agent market. If Reyes were a free agent this offseason would anyone give him a 2 year 44 million deal??? I highly doubt it, so why would anyone trade for that? Same with Nolasco although I will say Reyes will at least add value to a team in a Maueresque way. He'll be overpaid but he'll contribute. Right now that can't be said about Nolasco. Truth be told I would bet that Toronto insisted on the Rockies taking Reyes as part of the deal in order to give up the prospects they did for Tulo.

Twins, Rockies Talk Tulowitzki
halfchest replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think Reyes is negative value for Colorado. They may get something for him but at his age and recent performance his contract is more than what he would get as a free agent. If they eat some of the cost ten they may get a decent prospect or two. I would bet that Toronto insisted on including Reyes to balance things out financially in the deal. Our comparable would have been to send Nolasco I suppose. Mauer isn't realistic to be dealt due to his no trade so Nolasco would have been our best way to balance out money. -
It would be similar to why they took Reyes back for the Tulo deal. He may provide some use but it was probably more to even out the money with Toronto. We would be sending them Nolasco to balance out some of the cost and in turn giving up a better prospect package for Reyes than he would bring if he were traded outright. I don't think they could get much of anything in a straight up deal for Reyes without either sending cash or taking on a bad contract. At his age he wouldn't get a 2 year deal for 44 million if he were a free agent, but if they take on Nolasco who is signed for 2 more years and 24 million then it would make Reyes 2 years at 20 million look much more valuable.
-
If you can send Nolasco to them you're paying about 10 million per year for Reyes on a short term deal. So take Nolasco out of the equation and assume you're just trading for Reyes on a 2 year 20 million deal + what's left of this year. Then is it worth anything? I haven't watched Reyes and can't comment on his defense but figure it's gotta be better than what we're getting now and even in a down year offensively he'd be a solid leadoff option for the Twins. It's worth at least considering when you look at it this way.

chris cotillo saying possible 3rd team involvement

that came outta nowhere. Curious to see what the cost was when all the dust settles. Still a week left to see what the Twins do. It's not our year to go all out but damn do I miss playoff baseball. Hoping they can add enough to stay competitive without mortgaging the future.

Twins Kick Baltimore Tires
halfchest replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just can't see giving up that much for a couple rental guys. I don't see them changing us into world series contenders but definitely give us a better shot at staying in the playoff run. I would love to take a shot at both for a much cheaper price. Wieters just doesn't seem like a good rental target either given how he's played coming back from injury this year. For the right price and if the plan is to try to resign him after the year (saving us from giving up a draft pick) then I can see it. The Twins shouldn't be considering giving up big prospects for guys that will only help us one year. I'd rather we look to Tampa Bay and try to buy one of their relievers with a few years of control if they're really considering giving up Arcia and/or Kohl Stewart -
Twins, Rockies Talk Tulowitzki
halfchest replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think it was described perfectly as it's not a bad contract necessarily, but it's not one teams are likely to go after either. Santana is the kinda guy a team might pursue if he had say 1 1/2 years left on his contract rather than 3 1/2 due in part to the commitment and his age being to a point where a decline is likely for the second half of the contract. That's what really makes his suspension a bummer. To me when the Twins signed him I liked it and thought the first 2-3 years should be valuable with the last 1-2 maybe being suspect or overpaying him. To lose out on half of the first year as well as him not being available for the playoffs this year really hurts. -
Why the Twins Should NOT be Trade Players. Stick a Fork in Them
halfchest replied to DocBauer's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
The only "big" acquisitions the Twins should consider making would be ones that would benefit them for the next 2-3 years minimum. Guys like Hamels, Tulowitzki, or Lucroy who have multiple years of control and are still young enough to be contributors for a few years. I get those are big time names and not likely but still those would be the only major targets I would want the Twins to pursue. Surrendering top prospects for a rental would be stupid at this time. I agree with the thought of considering some minor purchases to bolster the bullpen/bench. -
I like the thinking. As happy as I am that the Twins are winning if the right deal presented itself I would love the Twins to make some "seller" moves despite being in contention. I just don't know how they could do it or justify it to the mainstream fanbase selling off any current pieces like Pelfrey/Milone/Hunter for a prospect. I don't see any of them as big pieces for the future and are middling current pieces. Obviously Hunter is going nowhere for multiple reasons but Pelfrey and Milone might be nice parts of a deal like this. They are contributing pretty solidly at the major league level but don't appear to be parts of the future for the Twins. Even with their regression their season long numbers look good and could entice a team that needs a bat (Arcia) and a back end starter to stabilize the rotation to make a deal. If the Twins don't break out of this funk soon we may be switching to sellers by this time next week and deals like this may be more of a reality.

Twins, Rockies Talk Tulowitzki
halfchest replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As good as Tulowitzki is I would rather have the Twins hold off for another year before making a big splash deal. Also, if we were to make a move to acquire a superstar I'd much rather go after an Ace pitcher. I'd much rather the Twins put their eggs in the Cole Hamels basket and try to make part of the deal offloading Nolasco's deal to open up both a rotation spot and save a few bucks. I think the Twins have a better chance of finding a solid SS between Polanco/Escobar/Gordon/Santana than they do of getting a legitimate Ace pitcher like Hamels. I guess with some nice organizational depth SS isn't as big of an issue to me and I see a better chance at them filling that void internally. Now Ace Pitcher and/or C are the spots I could understand making a splash. To me, Lucroy or Hamels should be the targets if the Twins are ready to make a splash. I think they are a year away from making any moves of the sort though. -
What is the point of having May in the pen?
halfchest replied to DaveW's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Well, he will hopefully be in the starting rotation to take over for Pelfrey within a few weeks. To me the decision should have been obvious when Santana came up that Pelf was beginning to falter and May was on the upswing. However at the time Pelf still had a sub 4.00 ERA and is the veteran. He also had a number of great starts the first half that extended his leash for sure. I'd love to see Pelfrey continue to give the team good starts but over his last 6 he's given up 27 ER over 32 IP. I think we need to look outside the organization for a setup guy for this year and then hope Burdi and the other flamethrowers are ready by next year. -
and now that you point it out, Santana was traded away as well. I think with his age and control left the Twins can afford to wait at least another year knowing he can be kept at a price if needed.

First-Half Most Improved Twins
halfchest replied to Brandon Warne's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I felt Gibson needed a seperate post. I've been a big fan for a long time, viewing him as a Scott Baker + groundball ability type player prior to his TJ surgery. I've been really hoping he would find a way to start missing more bats to make him into that player and the last two months he has shown that ability and am truly starting to buy into him as a #2 starter. There is likely to be some regression by some of these guys but more than enough guys that should improve to even this out. SS (Santana/Escobar/Polanco), C(Suzuki/Fryer/acquisition), and DH (Sano/Varga/Arcia) and 1B (Mauer/Vargas/Kepler) all have a very good chance of improving offensively. This should all help to counteract any regression from other areas and overall improve the team. -
First-Half Most Improved Twins
halfchest replied to Brandon Warne's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The other unmentioned factor in the teams improvement comes from the prospect wave we have all been clamoring for. We saw some last year in Santana and Vargas and most thought they were unlikely to repeat last years numbers but they are likely better than what we've seen from them last year. However, we've gotten to see Rosario come up and provide offense along with short stints from Buxton and Sano. This is not to mention guys still in the minors like Polanco, Kepler, and Berrios who are on the horizon. Not to mention some underperformers likely to contribute at some point like Meyer, Burdi, and Arcia that have had some struggles. It's exciting to see this team progressing and still having a number of strong future contributors sitting in the high minors waiting for their shots. The future seems very bright. -
Adam Brett Walker vs. Miguel Sano
halfchest replied to buckshotmike's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
If there is a decent comp in the minors I'd like to see it. I think he is a crazy outlier. I'd like to see a good scouting report on him. With his insane K numbers, I'm kinda surprised he's gotten enough good pitches to even get the extra base hits he has gotten. Is he Vlad Guerrero like in his ability to smack stuff out of the zone? (Not saying Guerrero a comp at all, not even close, but just asking is he hitting his homers on pitches out of the zone? Or are guys still giving him decent pitches here and there despite the high chance he'll strikeout? He's a confusing guy for sure. I hold out a glimmer of hope that he'll somehow develop some better pitch recognition and start walking a bit more at some point. Maybe become an Adam Dunn 3 true outcomes kinda guy. That's probably his best chance at becoming a relevant major leaguer. He doesn't have to be as good as Dunn at the plate either since he brings some defensive value and more speed than a guy like Dunn. But yah, to the main point yes, I agree his K's are what keep him from being a top guy like Sano. -
TD Midseason Top Prospects: #3 Jose Berrios
halfchest replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yah, his homerun rate is fine. another positive is his K/9 is back up over 9 during his second year in AA. Hoping he gains enough velocity and/or better offspeed stuff to keep that up once he hits the majors. I'd be interested to know what his groundball rates are too. If he can be a 7-8 k/9 and a groundball guy that would greatly increase his outlook. -
TD Midseason Top Prospects: #5 Tyler Jay
halfchest replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At this time, I'm gonna doubt we see him up for the Twins this year. I have to think we can get similar use out of some of our AA/AAA guys if we need them. Hoping the Twins give Oliveros a shot and consider bringing up Meyer for the pen. Give him a taste and if he succeeds let him stay in the pen this year. Consider moving him back to the rotation next year.
