  1. Silver Linings? 1) When posters realize a guy can't be in the minors and the majors simultaneously. 2) When the Twins focus on one goal--either winning consistently in the future, or, winning "enough" now, or controlling payroll. 3) Accept that most rookies struggle and dues have to be paid. 4) Stop protecting the status quo and start copying the presently successful teams' strategies.
  2. There was a real competition for the starting CF position in 2013 between Hicks and Mastroianni. Hicks was declared the winner. Maybe Hicks had the "inside track" due to him being a "1st Round draft choice" and his minor league numbers (at that time), but it wasn't a given that Hicks would be the CF. At some point (like many other poster than just me) have stated the team must make the leap of faith and declare the rookie the "starter." The alternative of buying "cute-rate" free agents to be your team (because your minor leaguers aren't proven MLB players!--Catch 22) will doom your team to mediocrity (at best).
  3. You seem to have forgotten some things. Mastroianni's Spring training was about as productive as Hicks, save for that one, monster game Hicks had (3HRs plus at least another hit or maybe a walk). Hicks was hitting HRs that Spring, Mastroianni had about the same BAVG--but not the HRs. Then, Mastroianni's injury--he wasn't the same afterwards--a sad tale. But his Spring Training was very productive--normally enough to win the starter's job, except for Hick's HRs (plus Hicks had the halo effect of a 1st round draft choice). Things would not have been so bad in 2013 if Mastroianni had not been injured given the Hicks failure.
  4. Finally! Someone who remembers that in 2013 "everything wasn't on Hicks" in CF. Mastroianni was the second person of the CF mix/competition. He was a journeyman who had his last chance to become a starter and badly damaged his foot during Spring Training. When Hicks "hicks-up", Mastroianni was put into the line-up before his foot had healed--hence making it far worse. The classic double-mode failure--both options for CF failed, one by injury the other "didn't cut it". Thank You for reminding other readers of Mastroianni as the "fallback" for CF.
  5. The Mighty Whiteys are flexing their muscles?
  6. I'm hoping for the best! It would sure suck if May gives up a half-dozen runs like the rest of them.
  7. Nishioka, but Erwin Santana might replace him.
  8. Yes! Consider that if Buxton isn't a likely all-star this team (and Ryan's employment) will be in the toilet. In theory, it sounds great to have multiple players at a single position--but not if you have to purchase one on the open market. Draft another top CF prospect? There may not be one. Add in the need for pitching. I hope you don't think that Shafer was responsible for 10 runs?--he wasn't. I haven't added any discussion about Sano. But the Twins need him to also become a star--so there will be a place reserved for Sano (though I am not certain what that position will be). Bottom line, if both of these guys don't meet expectations--the rest of this decade will have short Springs and long Winters. Positions will be reserved for both Buxton and Sano--because there isn't any alternative!
  9. Don't be negative! Early selections in the draft will help build a consistent winner. That is, if they ever get out of the minor leagues.
  10. My G--! For a moment I thought I was in the Negativity Thread.
  11. Or why the Twins should be starting May and Meyer (very soon) instead of talking (dreaming) about Cole Hamels.
  12. "...until they are ready..." Players aren't like bananas. Sometimes the "best" player is the younger/inexperienced player. Occasionally (all too often) the failed rookie was never destined to be productive--but he still might be the best available. Sorry to say it, but the comment "until they are ready" is basically a self-serving, glittering generality, that is based on hindsight--if he succeeded he was ready, and if he "didn't" he wasn't ready.
  13. Santana has lots of money and access to the finest healthcare insurance--yet you postulate he "asks someone" to get him "something to give him an edge" and we are supposed to believe that this substance isn't prohibited? Not all Fairy Tales begin "Once Upon a Time...".
  14. Whoa! I see some real benefit to low prices on tickets to baseball games. Just trying to spin a negative into a positive.
  15. Cole DeVries, Sam Deduno, Scott Diamond, Kevin Correia, and more(?)
  16. Amen. There can't be any other rational explanation.
  17. In some organizations when executives foul-up massively--there is a "reorganization".
  18. Yes! Oh, the many posts I couldn't have read about CFers and starting pitchers! TD would have been so short on subjects to post about that threads on departed Twins (like Joe Benson) would have cluttered the Forums.
  19. Gosh, May and Meyer, were behind both Milhone and Pelfrey in Ryan's Dream Team. Those two are damned or ****. Right now I'm envisioning the ceiling of the Sistine chapel (fresco part) and May and Meyer are in this bad place with a large finger pointed at them.
  20. What's the over/under now? I wonder what the other players will say when Santana returns?
  21. Not sure, but I would think that MLB considering offering a FA contract could demand medical testing--including those of PEDs. Of course, a player could refuse, but then the team could respond--"we're outta' here!" Said contract offer could (should?) include a clause concerning the use of PEDs--including penalties. However, I didn't see the Twins' offer to Santana--so, I can't form a conclusion.
  22. I suspect that the Twins have several "Colemans" on their 40 man Roster that can be safely out-righted to AAA.
  23. Others weren't on the 40 man roster this Spring (Relief Pitchers for example) and room was made to add them to the roster. Thus, that really wasn't an impediment. I'm not implying that Fryer should (or not) be on the roster--but being on the 40 man roster at the beginning of Spring Training didn't prevent Fryer from being on the Active Roster.
  24. Pinto had a huge setback with a concussion--so he wasn't "fit for duty" yet. Fryer was the other option--and he "hasn't paid enough dues" in the minors ala` the Twins Way.
  25. This roster was constructed to avoid 2015 being a disaster. Consider, declining season ticket sales, total paid attendance, and just plain relevance in the entertainment market of Minneapolis. Toss in a new manager and the inevitable comparisons between the two and a plan was constructed to try and make 2015 season "not stink". The flies in the ointment with that policy are: this season isn't going to assist in improving subsequent seasons and 2015 for the Twins isn't going to the World Series like 2014 and KC Royals--in short 2015 won't be memorial nor will it help for the future, it will simply stand alone and be forgotten.
