  1. I think Ryan did just fine. He still had the money left to add Garza. I was thinking he did not like the four year deal. You couldn't guess that Garza was returning to the Twins at a discount. He can still add a pitcher now if they are so cheap that it is a great value. You can move Pelfrey to the bullpen. $5Mil per year for a bullpen guy would not crush their budget. I think for a non-contender to land Arroyo it would have taken 3 years 30 million. No value there. I would think that Santana and Jimenez are looking for non-contenders to over pay also.
  2. I don't think he will get near 4/64. The teams that make the most sense to me are Toronto and the Yanks- I still do not see him as a fit for the Twins
  3. I thought I was the only one that felt that way. Maybe Gilmartin was hurt and could rebound if healthy. May just hasn't been that good as a starter and looks like a reliever. I think May should be back with Tonkin on these prospect lists. If Gilmartin can't cut it as a starter at least he is a left handed reliever.
  4. Do you see any additional free agent signings? Sees to be a lot of interesting pitchers still available.
  5. I don't think durability is as big an issue on your fifth free agent starting pitcher signing. There should be someone ready to step into the slot if he gets hurt. I like the idea better than Arroyo, Santana or Jimenez. Need a left hander, does not cost a draft pick and on a one year deal is moveable if he pitches well and the Twins drop out of contention.
  6. Thanks for putting this together. I am going down March 11th. The last time I was at the Twins spring training game I was looking forward to seeing Rod Carew hit. He bunted his first time up and left the game after that AB. They were playing Montreal. Montreal had just moved Gary Carter to catcher. He had three passed balls and cost them the game. So I think I need an updated guide.
  7. The problem with trades is what do we have to trade? The only thing the Twins have is room to add salary.
  8. Thanks Seth Keep thinking that signing Johan would be worth it just to see if Jose could learn his change up and pitching style.
  9. Caught my eye on MLB site. Count me in. We will have an open spot on the 40 man if Albers goes to Korea. We may even get the $500K to give Villareal
  10. I only got 17 on the trades Thanks for posting - it was fun
  11. This is where the front office has to define the teams goals. If you think that the team is close to contending and you just want an upgrade over Pedro Florimon then Drew is that. I just hope we get a shortstop better than Drew by the time the rest of the team is ready to contend. Drew hit .222 on the road. His numbers left handed were very good at Fenway Park. Paying for that and bringing him to Target Field will not work out that well. I would keep buying pitching. Tanaka not coming but the next three are possible targets. I like the idea about contacting the Dodgers about an outfielder but Crawford not Kemp. He is a good fielder who would add much needed speed at the top of the lineup. Dodgers would have to eat a large portion of Crawford's contract but that is not a problem for them. I agree with a previous poster who said Kemp's price will be too high.
  12. All Miller said was PERHAPS win a starting role. I do not think it is out of the realm of possibilities that PERHAPS Bartlett beats out Florimon. It is not likely to me that Florimon will ever be as good as Bartlett was. Matters how healthy Bartlett is. Hardy, Wieters, Castro are listed as being available but what would we have to trade to acquire these guys. I think free agency is our only recourse other than minor trades. Or a trade where we take on salary to acquire value.
  13. No AB's for Clete Thomas and Doug Bernier will help. If Plouffe and Parmelee are struggling again they can be replaced easier this year by Sano, Kubel. If Centerfield is as bad as last year they may just bring up Buxton. So I think there is some hope for improvement by subtraction.
  14. I think you have them rated about right. To me Santana makes the most sense. I think it would be fine that he may not be ready for the start of the season. That would give us time to sort out our roster. He would be the "6th" starter but I just read where last year MLB teams average 32 starts not from their top 5 starters(Fangraphs). As a fan this is the move I would like to see. I realize he will not be CY Johan but he could be better than most of our current starters. I don't care if they sign Arroyo or Garza. I don't want Drew.
  15. Drew offensive numbers have been achieved at two of the better hitting parks in the majors. Fenway and Arizona. He will not hit that well in Target field. You will be paying for last years numbers and be receiving target field results. Same as Hardy. While I think that Drew is better than Florimon I would rather they sign another pitcher with the money.
  16. Thanks for the breakdown. I am glad you made the point that there is room on the staff for any pitcher that is out of options. I believe that by signing three starting pitchers they have also inproved the bullpen by increasing the competition and hopefully the new starters throw more innings. I do think some of the bullpen numbers would improve if their innings went down. I don't recall losing many games when we had a lead in the late innings. The bullpen was fine and should be better this year.
  17. Not that entused about Drew. Injury history is a concern. I also think his offensive numbers would suffer at Target field. He has played in Arizona and Fenway. Two very good hitters parks. I do think money factors into these signings even though the Twins have plenty. There is always the next deal, next move to make. Injuries happen and you need flexibility.
  18. Would love to see Santana back. Seems like both sides parted ways on good terms. I have read repeatedly that players speak highly of playing for the Twins. Bartlett, Kubel, Pelfrey resigning shows this is more than just talk. This is the left hander that I want to see. I am sure he is not what he was but am also sure that he is better than some that we have.
  19. The other factor that I believe is playing a role in the Twins spending money is that their minor league talent is all a year closer. Last year there was money available but I don't think that Ryan thought he was going to get much help from the minors. This year I would not be suprised if Sano, Meyer and Buxton all were in Minnesota by summer's end. Fill in one or two more holes and this could be a solid, fun team to watch. I enjoyed your article.
  20. I keep reading the comments that Diamond and Worley are out of options like we might lose them. I would think they could put them in the bullpen and send Pressley and Thielbar to the minors. Swarzek could pitch the 1-2 innings that these guys pitched and Diamond and Worley could be long relief and match-up guys.
  21. Last Year's 5th starter the opening week was either Pedro Hernandez or Devries. This year it will be Deduno if healthy. TR's approach is fine with me. The only pitchers to worry about for innings are Gibson and Meyer. They SHOULD have to force their way into the lineup. Not just give the minor leaguers chances when they are kinda, sorta, maybe, I hope they are ready.
  22. I am glad that we signed Pelfrey. I would rather watch him pitch than Pedro Hernandez, Cole DeVries, Liam Hendricks, Vance Worley, Andrew Albers, Scott Diamond etc. Should be better this year plus he is not signed for much more than bullpen set-up money. There should be money left to add a catcher and a bat. If there is any threat of rain and he gets behind early I just hope Gardy leaves him in.
  23. Never trade with Tampa Bay. EVER
  24. Colabello - DFA Kubel could fill in at 1B if needed I would keep Worley and Diamond in the bullpen A lot of teams looking for bullpen help. I think Burton, Swarzcek and/or Fien gets traded. Twins have lots of parts- could rebuild the bullpen.
