  1. Well, then some other enterprising Twins fan would just disguise themselves as the bounty hunter Bombo Fett and free him.
  2. Yeah, Gonsalves was the obvious choice. Even if he scuffles in his debut with a similar performance to Melville, maybe he gets some nerves/adjustments out of the way to better contribute later (remember Duffey's disastrous debut vs Toronto in 2015?).
  3. Why would he have started on August 4th? His turn would have been August 3rd. There was no requirement that we would have had to cut Colon to keep him. Let's just agree that any comparison of this kind is going to introduce "butterfly effect" problems. That said, I would have liked to add to our depth chart. Especially knowing we had at least 1 doubleheader coming up down the stretch.
  4. Is this a complaint thread... about a lack of complaint threads? Well done!
  5. I read them! That's how I knew who Melville was before yesterday. I personally am not dying to see more of Slegers, but he is 3 years younger than Melville and in his first taste of AAA (Melville is in his 3rd go-around). Melville has also been a minor league free agent after each of the last 3 seasons, and will be again if we remove him from the 40-man. Maybe that will be Slegers fate someday too, but for now I can see how he offers a bit more upside/control (albeit modest).
  6. I don't believe Melville was cut from the indy league, I think he was let go to take an affiliated deal, which is standard practice. He pitched quite well in indy ball, correct?
  7. Awful? Garcia lost to Cleveland (would have fit right in with the Twins!) but the Yankees won his other two starts so far, nothing great but he pitched into the 6th inning and allowed only 3 runs in both of those wins.
  8. For reference, the B-Ref contracts page is pretty accurate for the guaranteed money too, although I find their arb estimates wrong: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/minnesota-twins-salaries-and-contracts.shtml
  9. I think no one mentions him because they don't want to spell his name. I would prefer Verlander. Shark has basically been a ~2 bWAR pitcher his whole career except one season. Verlander has been better than that every year except one, and he should top 4 again this year.
  10. Not quite. He can refuse any minor league assignment, even if he clears waivers, and basically force the team to either keep him on the roster or release him. At which point he gets his full salary but is a free agent. He could also accept an outright assignment to the minors, but that takes him off the 40-man which is why I was speculating it might be a bit harder to convince him to accept, as compared to a simple minor league optional assignment.
  11. No, just that it is a little more complicated than simply asking him to accept an optional assignment. Sometimes vets accept a short term optional assignment -- Anibal Sanchez for Detroit this year is an example -- but I suspect it is a bit harder to sell if you have to outright/release the player instead. Might be an ego thing, although I wonder how MLBPA benefits are affected too...
  12. Romero has already used an option (like all players on the 40-man, he had to be optioned out in spring training if he didn't make the MLB club). Gonsalves wouldn't use an option anymore unless he was added and sent back for at least 20 days before the end of the season.
  13. Romero's stats this summer were great. He was a sleeper / fast riser pick for many (even TD staff). He has been getting great reviews from evaluators. He was already on the 40-man roster. His innings limit was known in advance so it could be mitigated somewhat. All I was saying is the Twins could have set him up better for a potential contribution. The Twins position is also reasonable, but I simply have a mildly different opinion. No need to bludgeon me with appeal to authority arguments over it, and to keep demanding levels of evidence and certainty that couldn't possibly exist on a fan message board. I'm out on this topic for now.
  14. Well, they knew about both doubleheaders about 48 hours before Romero's start on Friday, and something like 4 days before Gonsalves' start, so I am not sure those are really valid excuses...
  15. Note that I am arguing on another thread that the Twins could have done a better job of setting up Romero and Gonsalves for potential 2017 contributions, so I am certainly not knocking them. Romero is pretty good, but it seems his value might still be a peg or two lower than Berrios at the same point. And Gonsalves... I get the feeling like he might be one of those guys who is just never as good as his minor league numbers. Even if those guys contribute in MLB, it is far from guaranteed that they would necessarily exceed even Verlander's diminished contributions. (Still on track for 4+ bWAR this year, after 6.6 last year, and even 2.2 in a partial season in 2015.) I'd be a little nervous about sending them both away, but if only one could headline a deal, I'd really have to think about it.
  16. I posted this elsewhere today, but perhaps Falvey was conservative because he didn't expect the Twins to be in this position. I mean, he basically admitted that at the trade deadline in regards to some MLB moves -- is it really that unreasonable that he also could have been overly conservative with minor leaguers too? Maybe they set their plan for Romero to be available for Chattanooga's playoffs, or only challenging Gonsalves at AAA once they had a good AA replacement ready to take his place (i.e. Littell and Thorpe).
  17. Do the Twins have any prospects who are meaningfully "like" Berrios? He was top 20-30 overall, A-/A grade by Sickels. Nothing against our current minor league pitchers, but they all seem to involve more risk than Berrios circa 2015.
  18. Did they risk Jorge's development? Romero was pretty darn dominant in AA from late May to the beginning of August (up until his last 2 starts). 13 starts, over a K per inning, 1.40 ERA. Wouldn't have cost anything to take a look at him for those spot starts in early July. That's the kind of chance I think this team might regret passing on.
  19. Melville was still pitching in Reds system at this time last year, albeit on a rehab assignment. 2017 was his first indy ball experience.
  20. I still think Romero should have gotten Jorge's spot starts, and if he looked good, we could have easily adjusted his July/August workload to potentially keep him available through September, perhaps for spots starts and pen duty.
  21. Fun to think about what relievers we could stack our roster with for the wild card game. Or not so fun... Boshers? Turley? Melville?
  22. Setting aside that Verlander is still better than Hellickson, we'd also be getting Verlander for a guaranteed pennant race while he is healthy and pitching very well.
  23. Revocable waivers. His no trade clause actually prevents Detroit from giving him up on waivers without his consent. And they weren't going to give him up without getting prospects in return, so no one bothered claiming him. I wouldn't read too much into it. Bryce Harper reportedly cleared waivers too, by the way.
  24. FYI, Tanaka and Cueto are opt-outs that probably won't be exercised, judging by their current numbers/health.
  25. Hellickson might take less than that, because he has an ERA of 5 and a 5.5 K/9 this year...
