  1. FWIW, Chalmers, like most of the prospects acquired in July, does not have to be added to the 40-man until after 2019.
  2. Well, Bailey and Harrison were nowhere near as team-friendly. Kluber 5/38.5 plus 2 options Carrasco 4/22 plus 2 options Bailey 6/105 plus 1 option Harrison 5/55 plus 1 option Moore and Teheran were, and there was plenty of praise for those two deals, even as neither became stars -- there wasn't much risk on them. With help from his contract, Moore was flipped for Matt Duffy, and Teheran probably could have been flipped similarly in recent years although the Braves declined to do so. But yeah, I agree with your larger point -- health and effectiveness are more important than contracts.
  3. The current CBA runs through 2021, so I think it is safe to assume the qualifying offer should still be around after 2019.
  4. After last year's slow market, and this year's large crop of pending FA infielders, there is a good chance they don't have to make a multi-year offer to get a better player than Forsythe. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/2018-19-mlb-free-agents.html
  5. I hope not. There will be quite a few infield alternatives on the free agent market, and our lack of financial commitments suggests we don't have to go cheap on the position.
  6. Season and a half! Castillo was our everyday second baseman in 2006, then again through July 2007.
  7. I agree with you about playing Adrianza over Forsythe, but worth noting that Adrianza is almost 29 years old (birthday on August 21, which my wall calendar says is also Senior Citizens Day ). So he's not that young, but he's definitely a bigger part of our future than Forsythe.
  8. Because Adrianza has to be available to pinch-hit for Johnny Field, obviously! Now Field may not be here next year either, but what do you expect Molitor to do, consider the future of multiple lineup spots simultaneously? While grieving over Belisle's knee?
  9. Don't forget Rooker could also go to the Arizona Fall League. (Of course, that wouldn't preclude a brief promotion to AAA either.)
  10. Yes. They use the season of the first minor league team to which the player is assigned, which for Graterol was indeed the DSL. https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3517 "If a player signs his first contract after the conclusion of the season of the MLB or minor league club to which he is first assigned (even if he signs prior to the Rule 5 Draft), the next season is considered to be the player's "first qualified season" for Rule 5 eligibility purposes. (Depending on the minor league, the conclusion of a minor league club's season could be as early as the first week of August, or as late as the second week of September)." Hypothetically, had he first been assigned to the Appy League in 2015 (whose season ended on August 29 in 2014), he might have been Rule 5 eligible a year earlier.
  11. Flip him to the same teams clamoring for his services this summer?
  12. I think Graterol is like Alcala -- Roster Resource has them mistakenly eligible this winter. They both signed after the conclusion of their minor league seasons in 2014, and were 18 or younger on the preceding June 5. Thus, neither should be eligible until their 5th Rule 5 draft beginning in 2015, which would be 2019.
  13. Interesting question. Pineda and Castro are going to take two of those spots -- there's no disabled list in the offseason. Here are 7 new Rule 5 eligibles that also warrant consideration: Gordon Wade Wiel Arraez Jay Stashak Vasquez Here's another 2 repeat Rule 5 eligibles that could be discussed: Stewart Reed We'll estimate 9 internal additions. Subtractions, we have 5 free agents who might be gone -- but I could just as easily see all of them either retained or replaced by another MLB player: Mauer Forsythe Belisle Rodney Santana So then you're cutting chaff. Could start with pitchers that haven't been used much: Busenitz, Curtiss, De Jong, Drake, Duffey, Slegers. That's 6. Astudillo is probably gone. Wilson too. I'd guess Granite is cut, then one of Grossman or Field, and you have 10 spots cleared. For wiggle room, you've got the other of Grossman or Field, plus Magill. Not too tough. A little less wiggle room if they added Rooker, though.
  14. Or at least, we can trade them away in another lost season in 5-6 years! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GibiNy4d4gc
  15. One of my big gripes with the front office is how they waited until late June to call up Mejia this year, and then they sent him back down right away after the heat stroke game in Chicago. (Technically worse: they sent Mejia down after Lynn's poor start on the following day.) Not that Mejia would have been a savior or anything, but he was a solid enough option to help shake things up, either as a starter or perhaps even in long relief.
  16. Forsythe is 2 years removed from showing any power. And his only meaningful recent versatility is playing 3B. He'd have to show a pretty solid return to form for me to consider bringing him back -- a binge of singles and walks alone won't cut it. (.583 BABIP so far with the Twins!) Keep in mind the market for infielders this offseason -- Forsythe doesn't look that compelling, and our projected payroll room doesn't suggest we need to go dirt-cheap on the position either. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/12/2018-19-mlb-free-agents.html
  17. Demonstrating that he is ready to fill the shoes of Matty B!
  18. Perhaps not. But that just makes it more important to time the promotion, if at all possible, for maximum impact. You want him to have significant impact on 7 MLB seasons, preferably starting with a competitive one.
  19. Morrison's 2019 option is $8 mil, or a $1 mil buyout. Technically, he is also on pace for 506 PA which would increase the option to $8.5 mil. So, net $7 mil or $7.5 mil. Given he only got $6.5 mil guaranteed (including the buyout) in late February coming off a career year last year, I think we can safely conclude he would get much less this winter, even if he goes on a "mini hot streak".
  20. Our last two position player pitching appearances (Astudillo and Garver) have both come immediately after Matt Belisle appearances in the same game. That's a special kind of setup man!
  21. Drake has had hundreds of professional innings for us to evaluate. Garver had literally zero. I think it would have been irresponsible NOT to pitch Garver last night, to see if he has what it takes to be part of our 2019 pen.
  22. I hear Jack Goin may have taken the database with him. And due to the record payroll, the Pohlads suspended the raffle that was to accompany the emergency pitcher questionnaire, so perhaps employee participation was lower. First prize was supposed to be a mountain bike this year!
  23. Lewis should debut either in June (after the likely Super 2 arbitration cutoff, like Correa and Lindor) or mid-April (after the 7th year of control is guaranteed, like Kris Bryant). These dates are largely irrelevant for the vast majority of players, but Lewis looks elite and thus they carry some significance, especially as a position player. Yes, the service time may prove irrelevant like it has for Buxton and Sano, but you have to cover that base in advance. The only question now is how quickly he can get through AA and AAA and stay healthy. June 2019 is probably a little too fast -- but it would be exciting! April 2020 seems like a good bet now, assuming health, with a fallback of June 2020 or April 2021 if he is slowed by an injury in the meantime. If the Twins deviate from those dates, it would be nice if his call-up was accompanied by a contract extension, buying out his arb years and at least one FA year.
