  1. I assumed by "lesser assets" you meant the 24th or 25th guys on the roster. Escobar, Centeno, etc. My mistake. I think you're getting hung up on specifics. I'm only suggesting that a major trade in the next 9 days, one that signals a plan of some kind- rebuilding or reloading (I doubt it matters), just something bold, would sway a segment of the base into his corner and give him an advantage for the GM job. What that trade might look like specifically I don't know. Dozier for Zimmer is maybe a bad example.
  2. I doubt another Fuld-for-Milone or Herrmann for Palka type deal would move the needle for potential ticket buyers. If ticket sales are linked to excitement, than a big trade would help Antony's chances, whether that is Dozier or someone else (there's not many other trade chips). Just as fans considered the 2012 offseason a success when TR traded two starting players including Revere (who was somewhat of a fan favorite too). Almost universally lauded at the time, lots of buzz. The only question in my mind is whether a big trade would generate more excitement than an outside hire of someone like Ben Cherington. Maybe it wouldn't. But it would certainly pressure JP to remove the interim label just as he did after TR made those trades in 2012 IMO. Moves like that give the impression you have a plan and are working swiftly to execute it.
  3. I'm with you but Manfred seems to think the average fan is not. He seems more concerned about dominant pitching and strikeouts, and pace of play- all kind of wrapped into the term "action," than he is game times, which is interesting I think.
  4. You might remember that after Bill Smith was fired, TR carried the interim label for years until it became apparent that he was never the interim guy at all. I think Reusse is right insofar as the question is more about what would excite the fanbase than it is about finding the best candidate. A splashy trade would accomplish that as much, maybe more, than a splashy outside hire. The Span-Meyer trade as exhibit A. Pretty much everyone thought it was a good move at the time. It would be very hard not to remove the "interim" label if Antony did something similar IMO.
  5. Bingo. Dozier for Meyer 2.0. Maybe Kyle Zimmer, something along those lines, don't you think?
  6. If Antony makes a splash at the deadline, I think the job will be his. Just one trade for a semi-highly regarded pitching prospect in AA or AAA might be enough. Public perception doesn't have to change that much for JP to roll with a known quantity, I suspect. It just can't be unanimous contempt like it had gotten to be for TR. We do have standards, after all.
  7. But did he mean that in the classic sense of the word "Gold Glove?"
  8. On the plus side, I'd say the Twins have assembled some fine fielding pitchers. Gibson especially. Unfortunately they get few chances to showcase their talents as batted balls tend to go screaming past their "zones" before the back leg lands.
  9. I'm warming to a pitch clock, but wouldn't want the actual 12 seconds that is on the books (luckily I don't think any of the clocks are that quick). Average pitch times are around 18-1/2 seconds so a 20 second clock seems reasonable to stop (or un-stop) the Pelfrey's of the world.
  10. True, but you can't legislate good command into the game. The zone has "expanded" to allow for more strike calls (truly its not expanded; better umpiring, aided by pitch tracking, has caused the called zone to more closely match the rulebook zone). And ironically, Manfred talks about doing the exact opposite - chopping off the bottom third of the zone, in order to necessitate more "action," ie. pace of play. Seems pretty clear this would actually lengthen games further by leading to fewer strike calls, more walks, etc. the exact opposite of the type of game you are describing.
  11. Ahhhhh I hate this topic. For many reasons. For starters, in this thread we're talking about length of game. The ESPN article talks about length of game. But Manfred isn't talking about length of game. He's talking about pace of play. "The pitching changes themselves slow the game down, and our relief pitchers have become so dominant at the back end that they actually rob action out of the end of the game" Which is it? Are fans okay with 3 hour games that move along or is game length more of a concern? What do the focus groups actually want, Bob? Sure there is some overlap between the two but let's be clear on the objective. If most fans want the former, then how many minutes do we want to shave off games? 10 minutes? More? If fans want a faster pace, how fast? How badly are Aroldis Chapman and Craig Kimbrel hurting the fan experience, exactly?

  13. Ah okay. I read he was elected to a 5 year term in 1988 and assumed he finished it. Still, mostly I was surprived to find out Harvey Pekar's dad was baseball commish. Anyway, resume your regularly scheduled programming. edit: First WS in 1987? Yep, r ight. I am can't numbers.
  14. Yeah I don't know about Manfred sometimes. Seems like there are about 12 other, less intrusive things you might try before this. Sorta related trivia - Paul Giamatti's dad, A Bartlett Giamatti, was Baseball commissioner during both of the Twins WS wins. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/photo/ph_hist_comm_mug_giamatti.jpg
  15. Pedro only played 5 seasons as well by this totally arbitrary criteria. Granted he amassed almost 40 WAR in those 5 seasons. IMO, after much deliberation and consternation, you'd have to start with Felix. Felix is a lock. Could go about 8 different ways with the other two.
  16. Would one of the mods please re-label this thread "Tracking Mauer?" K thx.
  17. No but now I'm curious. By fWAR its 1. Felix 2. Verlander 3. Halladay 4. Mussina 5. Lackey(!) 6. Pedro 7. Weaver 8. Colon 9. Shields 10. Freddy Garcia (!) But WAR's cumulative so Verlander and Felix naturally have the edge. On a WAR/Inning basis (which probably lines up closely to FIP) the top RH SPs since 2000 are: 1. Pedro 2. Halladay 3. Kluber 4. Darvish 5. Mussina 6. Schilling 7. Verlander 8. Felix 9. Hudson 10. Clemens By ERA: 1. Pedro 2. Felix 3. Tanaka 4. Cobb (what happened to him?) 5. Iwakuma 6. Darvish 7. Gray 8. Hudson 9. Halladay 10. Kluber
  18. God I love Rosario. Kepler's growing on me too.
