  1. Rosario screwed three times by the umpires. Pitch one, off the plate, called strike. Pitch 3, off the plate, called strike. Challenged call after the batter had reached the batters box.
  2. I don't think dumping Dozier and rolling with Polanco would help the rebuild necessarily. Dozier was the better player in the minors, he's the better player today. Its possible, maybe likely, Dozier would remain an asset through the rest of his contract, and it also seems possible that if the Twins did roll with Polanco, that in 12 months they'd be faced with the familiar dilemma of- continue to play a below-average player, hoping he figures out MLB pitching, or, try to sneak that player through waivers at risk of losing him for little/no return? If you look at the worst 2B in baseball by fWAR, they are almost all teams that are or should be rebuilding- Cesar Hernandez Phillies 0.9 Jed Lowrie Athletics 0.2 Johnny Giavotella Angels 0.4 Josh Harrison Pirates 0.5 Starlin Castro Yankees -0.4 Brandon Phillips Reds -0.2 whereas the "buyers" ie. contenders, are pretty well set at 2B. So because of the roster dilemma Polanco could easily cause, and the 2B market looking like it skews towards the rebuilding side, Polanco would be the guy I'd shop, not Dozier.
  3. Strib: Castile in fact had a permit to carry http://www.startribune.com/philando-castile-had-permit-to-carry-gun/386054481/ Officer Yanez's lawyer: Office reacted to gun, not race. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/lawyer-officer-who-shot-philando-castile-case-has-nothing-do-n606471
  4. Gofundme for Castile family. https://www.gofundme.com/philando
  5. Provocative read. Don't know if we can generalize that 15-70-15 ratio to the St Anthony police department, or where officer Yanez would fall along that spectrum, but something to think about for sure.
  6. So, you think the officer is this guy basically http://67.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lxngsktSvg1qc9u7w.jpg I haven't actually met that level of racism in real life, have you? It does sound strange but I think the odds are better "wideset nose" means "wideset nose- for a black person." Sort of like when McNulty is trying to find Omar and he asks a bunch of kids if they've seen a "dark skinned guy with a scar." He didn't mean a black guy with a scar.
  7. Right away its interesting that the woman thought they were pulled over for having a missing tail light and the police transcription says the reason for the stop was on suspicion of a robbery. I wonder how often this scenario plays out on a daily basis across the country, where a policeman approaches a someone about a minor offense because he fits a description of a suspect in a nearby/recent crime, but in fact has nothing to do with it. How often those situations escalate, and if there could be some adjustment to protocol that might de-escalate those situations. Like perhaps telling the person "we stopped you because you fit the description of a criminal suspect" instead of "we stopped you for (insert minor violation)." I wonder if that would elicit more positive reactions from people who are innocent and less confusion/ outrage at being stopped for chickensh- offenses. Also wonder if that would compromise officer safety when the suspect they are looking for is the one they've stopped, and is armed such as the case with the Lauderdale gas station robber.
  8. His swing needs work. Too long, too army. Needs to belly up to the plate IMO. He can barely reach a lot of strikes.
  9. So as not to offend anyone else in the Tribue thread here is a side topic for additional discussion, background about the Castile shooting, the retribution in Dallas, police violence, race, etc. Police scanner transcipt prior to the traffic stop: http://www.kare11.com/mb/news/police-scanner-audio-1/267042738 News article on the Jul 2 robbery in question, including photo of perp: http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/07/05/lauderdale-armed-robbery/
  10. Yes, facts are starting to trickle out. I was referring to the FB video because I think that's what shocked a lot of folks and raised the panic level with a lot of folks including maybe those in Dallas. And to be clear, I'm not justifying the outcome. We need to be able to police ourselves without killing ourselves. But we should also make sure our outrage isn't misdirected and that might mean pumping the breaks for a few days while the smoke on this situation clears. Sorry if I derailed the thread. Its obviously a tragic event, we all feel terribly about it, especially the little girl in the back seat. I'll open another thread if braoder discussions about police violence, race, etc should be taken up separately.
  11. Please don't put words in my mouth. If this was a criminal homicide by the cop, he should be punished. If it wasn't, then we need to look at the system, the protocol governing traffic stops, where a man can wind up dead. Its either one or the other, but one of those needs to happen. I only commented because, unsurprisingly, the public is unanimously against the cop when all we really have about the shooting is a he said-she said, and when "presumption of innocence" was brought up, it didn't seem to apply to the cop.
  12. But Van, a cop's job isn't to try people, its to arrest them and then turn them over to the courts. That's where presumption of innocence comes in, its a judicial principal. The man wasn't on trial for anything. The cop, however, could be. Therefore we should assume the cop is innocent until proven guilty, no?
  13. Everyone agrees that this was a tragic outcome, but how does presumption of innocence apply to the driver? He wasn't charged with a crime or even under arrest. The cop on the other hand could be looking at criminal charges.
  14. Presumption of innocence would only apply to the cop, no? The driver wasn't even under arrest. The shooting appears to have resulted from a miscommunication about the driver reaching into his pocket. In the video the cop says "I told him not to reach for it," and the woman replies "you told him to pull out his ID."
  15. I love Santana but it sure looks like its shaping up to be a seller's market.
  16. Well the last $40b would have been better in a zero-interest bank account, because its buybacks have been at $97/share on up to $128. Today the price sits at $96. I'm sure there's a lot of shareholder demand for buybacks / dividends, but that is an alarming amount of waste IMO.
  17. OK but what the hell are they doing with the buybacks? I agree they should remain profitable but I am losing confidence in their ability to smartly reinvest those profits. They've already spent $117b on itself, buying at as high as $128/share. And they're gonna buy another $58b worth of Apple stock over the next two years. Profits are one thing, but that's wasteful. And its certainly not the behavior of a growth company, is it?
  18. The thing with Apple is it has a mountain of cash yeah, and most times when it dips into it, its to buyback shares. $40b in buybacks since 2014 but the stock price has... stayed flat. And now margins on its phones are shrinking, sales are slowing. Seems like Apple has to find a more profitable way to invest that cash than itself, because itself isn't as profitable as it used to be.
  19. I have lost a lot of (unrealized) value in China too, because I'm not a disciplined buyer and bought at the height of the bubble. I really need to take my own advice and stick to the CAPE guide more closely. Should probably sell some US stocks while I'm at it, which for me is a mostly VDE, Apple, and VBK.
  20. Something to keep in mind. http://www.starcapital.de/research/stockmarketvaluation This page updates quarterly. RSX, FXI, EWZ, might be good buys right now.
  21. It also remains to be seen what the return is, no? Sometimes those PTBNL are decent. Eg. David Arias.
  22. That's awesome you've gotten that kind of return but a 5-year sample size for one portfolio is way too small to judge someone smarter than the market. Most research on the topic suggests on average you will underperform the broader market after expenses, on any kind of meaningful sample size (25+ years) with an advisor. Even a guy like Warren Buffet, its debatable whether he possesses any actual skill or is just the anomaly way out on the bell curve who has gotten extremely lucky for the last 50+ years.
  23. Kintzler, Nunez, and Grossman were mentioned as under the radar possibilities on MLBTR today. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/ten-under-the-radar-trade-candidates.html
  24. LOL don't worry about a platoon. Molitor will spread around PT for 2-3 games then lock into "the hot hand." Really helps a young player like Rosario put together patient at-bats I'm sure.
  25. Oh Ozzie. http://m.mlb.com/video/v884483283/dettb-verlander-earns-strikeout-arcia-breaks-bat/?game_pk=448078
