  1. Holy moly. Don't see a lot of fly balls cruise over that 420 sign at Comerica http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/73955164/v1280829683/mindet-sano-connects-for-440ft-home-run/?query=miguel%2Bsano
  2. Mauer has 3 walks with RISP. He also has 2 hits. He has made an out 3 times in 8 opportunities. Last year he had 33 walks and 31 hits in 140 PAs with RISP. His OPS was .838. In 2015 his OPS was .922. In 2014 it was .933. This idea that Mauer doesn't perform with runners on base, that walks are some kind of failure, is nitpicking to a degree that instantly discredits you IMO. If every player did as well with RISP as Mauer the Twins would score 1000 runs a season.
  3. Another guy completely absent from top 100 lists is Ben Fisher. Eastern Kentucky, Sr, 1B, L/L, 6'1, 215. Leads the NCAA in home runs with 17. Overall he's batting .412/.490/.885 in 153 PAs, to go with 21 BBs and 20 Ks (13.1%). Here's video of him taking BP in last summer's Northwoods League. Pretty much the only vid of him anywhere: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDMWofsWpA4
  4. Mods, please move this thread to the "Other hockey" forum.
  5. Couldn't find a link but one question I would have is who/what are setting the strike zone overlay? Is it static? Could be the pitch tracking was 100% accurate, and it only appeared to be off because the zone overlay was badly misplaced.
  6. That's how it sounded to me too. Similar to some of the refrains before the Iraq invasion. "Saddam bombs his own people, he invades his neighbors. How many lives would have been saved if Hitler had been stopped when he started doing those things?"
  7. So Gibson blew the lead AND broke Gameday. That's a good days work even for him.
  8. That's fine. I'm not saying you're wrong, just pointing out for the record that the grand slam came on the slider. I didn't see the game and that wasn't clear from your discussion or the screencap. Also Brooks pitch classification appears to be wrong. Or not updated yet.
  9. I vaguely recall this coming up in prior discussions about pitch tracking. I believe it is unique to gameday, let me see if I can find a link.
  10. According to that link Gibson threw 20 pitches yesterday. You guys watch the grand slam? Came on a slider.
  11. Why wouldn't he hit? He has all the leverage to make teams agree to something like that.
  12. Buxton as we all remember, was a big "projection" guy when he was taken. Out of curiosity I looked up Buxton's senior year batting stats..513 with 3 homers. Other prep bats taken that year: David Dahl- .429 with 4 homers Addison Russell- .358 with 8 homers Corey Seager- .519 with 10 homers D.J. Davis- .376 with 0(?) homers Some comps to Buxton taken in other drafts- Mike Trout- .531 with 18 homers (state record) B.J. Upton- .641 with 11 homers Justin Upton- .519, 11 homers
  13. Fangraphs commenter had a good idea for the Twins- get Otani, then use the DH spot for Center Field.
  14. Or maybe, "checkout this 7 bedroom house on Lake Minnetonka- the team's willing to let you stay here on a 2 year lease for $100/month. The 6 car garage has a Ducati and a Hummer and jet skis. There's a $100,000 gift card to Fuji-ya sushi in the kitchen somewhere. Oh and I think the red phone over there is a direct line to the team's 24/7 on call 'masseuse.'" Whatever the NY/BOS/LAD equivalent of that is.
  15. How would a team go about promising an extension legally? Would a promise to extend at more money later break the Joe Smith rule?
  16. Yeah, I agree they'll factor into his equation probably. But they don't close the ~$200m gap between his IFA bonus and what he's worth.
  17. The other thing to keep in mind is that teams who blew through their spending cap in the 2015-2016 IFA market will be limited to $300k bonuses in the 2017-2018 period. This includes: The Cubs, Dodgers, Giants and Royals will be in their second year of the penalty, while the A’s, Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Nationals, Padres and Reds will be in their first penalty year.
  18. Is it just me or is this situation ripe for corruption? Only what, a million and change separates the top and bottom bonus pools? Money won't be the deciding factor in where Otani chooses to play, so what will be?
  19. He leans less on his fastball and has a viable changeup now. He found it in Atlanta, maybe something clicked with the pitching coach down there?
  20. I was going to say a bullpen anchored by Matt Belisle and Brandon Kintzler isn't going far in the playoff but the rotation probably wouldn't either. I like the success so far, I'm not complaining, but the pitching still isn't there. Stick to the plan.
  21. Alright so to be clear, I have speculated that he's facing below average competition based on his high school attendance. I don't know that to be true. But for certain he is facing regular old high school kids, currently, not college bound all stars. He won't face them until August nope he'll be drafted. By the way do you know if cumulative individual stats exist for the Area Code Games? I haven't been able to find any.
  22. I thought Greene was still playing his high school schedule. Have the area code game started already?
  23. I didn't phrase that quite right. The projections have gotten out of hand. His production against high school competition does- or should, count for SOMETHING when making projections. Its not an exact science by any means, I realize that, but when the divergence between projection and results becomes so great that we have a player underperforming past supplemental round picks being pegged as a 1-1 talent, that should raise a red flag.
  24. I would challenge anyone to find statistical comparisons to Greene that went in the top 3 picks. I have spot checked a few recent picks and every one outperformed Greene in high school. Eg. Nick Gordon batted 1.483 his senior year. Greene batted 1.250 last year, but is only at .971 so far in 2017. Justin Upton, who was a SS in high school, batted .508 with 12 homers his senior year. Greene is at .306 with 3 homers through a half season. Andrew McCutchen batted .709 with 16 homers. Colby Rasmus batted .484 with 24 homers. Similar story on the mound- Greene has 43 Ks in 28 IP (106 BF, 40.6%, 13.8 K/9). By comparison, Kershaw struckout 139 in 64 IP (19.5 K/9). porcello struckout 112 in 71 IP (14.8 K/9). Odorizzi sruckout 146 in 89.2 innings (14.7 k/9). The highest of these picks was Kershaw at 7. Porcello was 27th and Odorizzi was 32nd. Further, a few of these guys put up better numbers at the plate too, while attending schools 2-3 times as large in attendance. Suggesting they faced tougher competition. I believe too much of Greene's value is being placed in projection. High school results aren't the be all end all but when they stray to far from comps that should be a red flag that perhaps his stock is in bubble territory.
  25. Jason Castro, with 0.5 fWAR, has, on a Fangraphs $/WAR basis, earned 1/6 of his contract. Put another way, Castro is on pace to return $299.5 million in surplus contract value.
