1. I doubt even the "phree-spending Phils" (nice) are willing to spend $34M on first basemen next year.
2. Yeah, I believe he'll get an inside-the-parker before he has a chance to set any record. He's come close on multiple occasions already.
3. If your point is that he's likely to regress, I agree. The notion that he hasn't pitched legitimately well for the Padres is untrue, though. He is, in fact, striking people out – he's averaging a K per inning with SD. In his second-to-last start against the Rangers, he pitched seven innings of two-run ball with 10 strikeouts. Against the Rangers! I'm sure his early run with the Padres is unsustainable, but there's no way he was even capable of this kind of production the way he was throwing here. Pretty remarkable turnaround.

5. This week's series against the first-place White Sox will serve as a tough test for this Twins team. They've rebounded after a lousy start to go 13-10 over their last 23 games, remaining on the periphery of an AL Central race that no club seems poised to run away with. In three days, the Twins could conceivably be within 5.5 games of first place. They could also find themselves out of it by double digits. Perhaps no one will be under a bigger microscope in this crucial showdown than Francisco Liriano. He's been great since returning to the rotation at the end of May, posting a 2.67 ERA and 35-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 30 1/3 innings while allowing only one home run, but his opponents in those five starts have been the Athletics, Royals, Cubs, Brewers and Pirates. Those teams rank 28th, 19th, 25th, 10th and 29th in the majors in OPS, respectively. Liriano has been feasting on weak competition, for the most part, and on Monday he'll be matching up against a first-place team with a starter in Jake Peavy who has been flat-out excellent all year. It would be a stretch to say the Twins are even on the fringes of contention at this point, but they're not out of it. Climbing back into the mix would require a continued transformation from the rotation, and Liriano will need to be one of the guys leading that charge. Both he and the team will have a chance to make a statement at Target Field on Monday night.

7. If Capps hits the DL, who comes up? Oliveros and Slama are both injured, I think. Could Guerra get a look?
8. Mediocre is a huge upgrade over much of what they've been sending out there.
9. Duensing looking pretty good. I'm actually surprised it has taken the Twins this long to give him a chance in the rotation.
10. Last night Mauer was deemed slower than Liam Hendriks. Today he's in the starting lineup. Be interested to see how he moves.
11. At this point last year the team was amidst its highest point of the season, so the comp isn't really fair. That team unraveled after July and went an unbelievable 13-41 in the final two months. Barring an avalanche of injuries, I don't see that happening this year. In fact, this club might have its best ball ahead of it yet.
12. Enough of this nonsense. Put him on the DL.
13. Guthrie has been unbelievably bad – the worst in the Rockies rotation and that's saying something. There's no devaluing him at this point. He was never going to fetch anything of value. You're right that the starters they have to work with are pretty awful, but I don't see the harm in lowering the pressure on them and maybe coaxing them to throw a little harder for 75 pitches. Worth a shot at this point. I dig it.
14. Actually I remember coming across a copy of the scouting report on Nishioka (it was floating around online at some point, I think). It really wasn't that complimentary. Basically said he had the tools to be maybe a decent MLB regular, not a star. Clearly even that proved to be inaccurate, but the Twins must have been going off something other than straight scouting input to make this decision.
15. Yeah, I wrote about this the other day. This team inspires a lot more optimism than last year's even if they're on pace for a similarly bad record. Plouffe, Revere and Diamond are actually looking like they might be quality, inexpensive regulars going forward. Dozier too, to a lesser extent, although he hasn't looked great and I'm a bit more skeptical of him given his pedigree. A major starting pitching turnaround next year would do a lot for this club. That might be somewhat hard to envision in light of the current state of affairs, but if the aforementioned younger guys can fill spots cheaply, they ought to have some money to spend.

17. You may have noticed a few changes around here recently. That's because we've been making some slight upgrades to the look and functionality of the site, thanks to the addition of a new member to the Twins Daily team. Please welcome Brock Beauchamp, who posts here under the user name rocketpig. Brock is a web designer by trade and he's got plenty of experience running an online Twins community, as he oversaw the website Battle Your Tail Off for many years. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK]I've been an on-and-off participant at BYTO, a message board known for its snark and high-level Twins discourse. Brock felt he was starting to burn out on managing the site so he came to us with a proposal to fold it into Twins Daily. We were happy to bring him aboard. By his own admission, Brock isn't a writer, so you probably won't see many stories from him popping up on the front page. He will, however, be an active contributor and moderator in the forums and his technical skills will be invaluable as we continually work to improve the user experience here at TD.com. Please join me in giving Brock (and all other migrating members of BYTO) a warm welcome to the community. UPDATE: Brock wrote a blog post explaining some of the changes he's made thus far and calling for suggestions from users regarding what they'd like to see here on the site. Please find that post here.
18. This new arrangement was not implemented over the last 13 games. In fact, it is very likely a response to the last 13 games.
19. Bard signed yesterday.
20. With their starting pitching in shambles, the Rockies have made the decision to switch to a four-man rotation, implementing a 75-pitch limit on all of their starters with the goal of letting their bullpen (which has been much better) have a larger impact on games. What do you think? Good idea or bad? And if this approach shows results, is it something the Twins – who are in a very similar situation – should consider?
21. I think he's been pretty solid. Still occasionally has erratic bouts with the arm, but those have diminished greatly over time which has me convinced they were largely the result of yips. He shows a good feel for the position and has made some nice barehanded plays on bunts. Not a top-tier defender by any means, but he's got all the tools to handle the hot corner, as you'd expect from a converted shortstop.
22. Are we sure they're not talking about the same thing? Lat and shoulder are sometimes used interchangeably in injury reports.
23. Glad to have you contributing, TBF. Thanks for the kind words about the site! I'm sure your gal will love Target Field.
24. This couldn't be further from the truth. Contending means giving the fans something to care about. It means higher attendance and more money to spend. It means having a chance to get on a hot streak in October. There's nothing bad about contending. Since taking over, Ryan has made two of the better free agent signings in the club's recent history (Willingham and Doumit) and snagged a high-end relief arm off the heap (Burton). I'd say he's done pretty well thus far. Cut him some slack; he inherited quite a mess from the Bill Smith era.
