  1. I agree. I'm skeptical it was as bad as Law lays it out here. Goin has been in the position for around a decade, and they've had 2 or 3 people for multiple years prior to this. It was certainly lean and needed to be ugraded, but that seemed a little exaggerated.
  2. They need a starter for Monday, either him or Wilk.
  3. Not sure this is Pohlad's fault. Ryan left in June. The hire was basically in place in late August/late September, but Falvey didn't come over until the Cleveland season ended, which unfortunately was the last possible day of the baseball season. Not sure what else you wanted Pohlad to do (other than make a move like this in 2011)?
  4. I don't think it is limited to the division, most of the AL (and most of baseball) is pretty mediocre. Twins can hang with most teams. I expect Cleveland to get better and be the cream of the division, but it's not a sure thing. Their top two starters are currently injured, and much of the rest of the rotation hasn't been that good (bullpen is really good though).
  5. I don't think it is service time, it is development time. If you take 2-3 years off one way, the chances of recouping value the other way are really slim. If I was drafting I would put no weight in that small probability. I would take the best hitter or pitcher and go with it. If they judge McKay the best pitcher, I can live with that. But if they think Wright is a better pitcher than McKay, but there is also some possible value from McKay hitting if he struggles as a pitcher so they take him, that is a mistake.
  6. I don't think so at all. I want to bet on the highest probability one way or the other. I think going through 2-3 years of development one way and then switching and thinking you'll get any type of significant value is more theoretical than reality.
  7. His k/9 rate has been low all season, perhaps a sign of diminished stuff. Not always easy to rebound from serious injury.
  8. I absolutely think their value is being inflated because they are so good at both pitching and hitting.
  9. He was a top 5 guy coming into the year. And he's been really good for 5 of his last 6 starts. He has size and stuff. Him and Greene are the only two that could become #1s in my mind. He had a slow start to the season, but has really picked it up recently, and is now performing at quite a high level.
  10. Looks like McKay and Wright will each get one more start before conference and ncaa tournaments start, so probably at least 3, maybe 4-5 more starts before the draft. Also interesting that the college world series starts 5 days after round 1 of the draft. Vandy and Louisville have a good reputation for not overworking their pitchers.
  11. I don't consider the pitching aspect likely either. It will almost certainly catch up to them. I'm not opposed to selling, but I want to see them really start losing first. I just don't think the AL is all that good. And I think being in a playoff race in September has value going forward for a young lineup. EDIT: Just look at what being in the race did for the 2015-16 team! But this team is different than 2015, much brighter future.
  12. I mostly agree. I do think he is downplaying the run prevention situation a little (due to significantly better defense) and I would leave a little space for positive regression for the lineup. But yes, the pitching is set to regress negatively unless Berrios is a hero, Gibson rebounds and returns, and the young relievers come up soon and dominate.
  13. I come across "pitch to contact" about every other week from quotes from other teams, especially pitching coaches. Always gives me a chuckle.
  14. It's probably time for AAA for Melotakis, but I don't see how such a low k rate will translate to mlb success. Does seem Burdi is starting to turn it on.
  15. I assume they'll DFA Wilk. During the limbo they can bring Turley back to AAA.
  16. Thankfully the Berrios concern here didn't age well. Wouldn't be suprised if Wilk is the one DFAed to make room for Jose.
  17. Impossible to know what everyone thinks for sure. I would generally think they focus on their own work, support the players in the clubhouse, and don't get overly excited about prospects.
  18. There's a front office person on the radio each week.
  19. I don't think the players are unaware the pitching is problematic.
  20. I think fans rate prospects a lot higher than established major league players do. They were on the team last year when Berrios pitched.
  21. Berrios hasn't been down this long because of the WBC.
  22. I was pretty convinced he had it figured out a couple days ago considering the situation.
  23. Getting an emergency long man is the least of the controversy here.
  24. That would be pretty amazing if after all this angst (myself included) it ends up being Berrios starting on Saturday over Tepesch, and then Mejia (or Gibson) when the next start is needed May 20. Seems there is a split in the front office. As there should be. Start Berrios already.
  25. Just an open 40 man spot. That is easily fixed if they want to bring someone else on board.
