  1. MVP: Buxton POY: Gibson (Santana traded) Reliever: Pressly ROY: Chargois I think Mejia has some moments but makes 20ish starts with an era in the high 4s/low 5s. Chargois is called up and pitches well. Gibson stabalizes a little and makes 30+ starts. For MVP I think there are actually options thid year. Going with the elite d
  2. To add to this, if they are a legitimate fringe .500 team this year, backed up by underlying stats, it is not a huge jump to think they could improve some more and be better in 2018. Wouldn't it be helpful to have Santana for that season? Nothing wrong with capturing some of the excess value of Santana for the Twins. I don't really expect this, so I would anticipate a trade of Santana, but if given the two choices that were offered, I would greatly prefer that the Twins are playing well and that it makes sense to keep Santana and things are looking positive for 2018. I am not hoping for a position where it is clear they should unload him.
  3. I was thinking the same thing about being favored. Won't happen all that often this year. That's the main problem facing this squad, day in, day out they will face a better opponent...
  4. I was hoping they would have put Sano somewhere where he would do less damage on defense. Like RF.
  5. Pitch with a purpose Jose. It was the right move to send him down, but here's to a really short stay.
  6. Berrios is starting tomorrow for Rochester against the Twins. I think it's awesome.
  7. No chance Molitor wants Haley. Beyond that, not really many other options.
  8. It's garbage. Has been for 7 years. Bringing in a handful of vets on low cost deals to fill a roster isn't the opposite of a rebuild. In fact, the White Sox are doing the same thing. While they acquired some good young talent, all of it is starting in the minors in favor of vets.
  9. Oh the humanity, two bench guys and a 27 year old DH. All the evidence you need that the Twins aren't rebuilding.
  10. I did a quick search of some free agent lists. Here is mlb.com's Top 25 FA list from last offseason. 3 of the 25 were under 30, and they were all 29 - Ramos, Chapman, Jansen. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/208095448/top-25-mlb-free-agents-of-2017/ There are just so few good free agents available under 30. It's a worthwhile goal, but just doesn't really exist in reality. Plenty of guys off waivers, Rule 5, etc, but very few otherwise.
  11. I understand that, but I think that is more a theoretical complaint than reality with players that would be available. It is pretty hard to add someone from outside the org under 30, unless you are talking about marginal players acquired off waivers or Rule 5. Or they could trade an established player, but would then need to backfill with a different free agent in their 30s. If young guys aren't ready have to fill in the roster somehow.
  12. I would agree 100% the lack of talented pitchers on the roster is the underlying issue here. Amd the front office was limited in the offseason on what they could do. I would count Mejia, Duffey, Rogers and Haley as young guys who got a shot and made the 25 man. I don't think any other young pitchers were denied a spot or unjustly kept off the 25 man. In theory I have agreed with your points, but my pushback has always been that the reality of the Twins roster never allowed what you advocated. And on a bigger point, the Twins roster construction is typical. And for good reason. And on another point, the teamis actually much younger than people are willing to admit. Too much focus on vets on the margins over the reality of the young position player core.
  13. Polanco is starting! You're upset that Escobar or Santana isn't starting instead of a traded Dozier? Or you think the scrapheap SS they would add to replace Dozier (and move Polanco to 2b) is that much of a difference? And does it really make a big difference in the grand scheme of Twins future competitiveness if Santana is traded midseason instead of spring training? I accept the frustration of no young relievers, but still strikes me as a player problem, not a front office problem. They aren't sending relievers down who actually performed.
  14. And none of the guys brought in by the new front office have any sort of investment that would prevent them from being cast aside when younger/better options are ready to go.
  15. Also, fun fact - looking at ESPNs analysis of rosters at the moment, Twins are second youngest: http://www.espn.com/mlb/stats/rosters/_/sort/average_age/order/true This obviously is more of a 40 man look with some non-roster guys, but does kind of contradict the complaint taht they didn't get any younger. This is a fuller roster of players that are likely to be used throughout the year. Once the 25 mans shake out they might drop a couple spots for opening day roster, but certainly not that many, and perhaps none at all.
  16. Almost certainly would have made them older. Any young players added by trading Dozier and/or Santana would have been prospects that almost certainly wouldn't have broke camp with the team. And they would have had to add veterans to fill those roster spots on opening day. This is especially true for Santana. As bad as shape the rotation is in right now, no chance they would go opening day with Mejia or Berrios instead of Santana. They would need a 9 man bullpen. It's really hard to add young players right? It's not exactly clear how they would do that unless they wanted to force a young guy from the farm he isn't ready. Better to develop them and call them up when they're ready. Even teams that traded everyone and stripped to the studs filled a large part of the roster with veterans to hold a spot until a young guy is ready (I don't think Houston or Chicago were ever the youngest teams in the majors).
  17. They should get older. Their young core wasn't going anywhere and it all aged a year. Trading someone like Dozier would have made them even older. Santana likely too.
  18. Mine too. But I doubt it would have made much of a difference at this point. I would have like an extra FA or two, maybe culling some of the edges of the 40 man, but it wasn't a great roster (obviously), and much of the value is locked into young guys that a rebuilding team wouldn't want to move rather than vets than can be flipped for prospects.
  19. I personality think they are doing right with the rotation for the reasons you mentioned. Do think they could have done better in the pen and on the bench with FAs.
  20. I support giving Hughes a handful of starts to see if he has anything before they move him to the pen. That's the type of move, along with a stretched out Santiago that can change the makeup of the roster pretty quickly. Heck, Chargois might take off too.
