  1. Based on what? He was ok down the stretch last year but hasn't exactly lit it up this spring. Why the hurry to put players in significant roles they've done nothing to earn?
  2. They still might clean house. I think that is a very difficult thing to pull off in an offseason. There might be some talent in the front office too that needed to be resourced or empowered. There is wisdom in hanging back for a stretch, evaluate what you have, and then make changes. I suspect some of the moves will start trickling out throughout the season.
  3. He has also gotten hurt the last two years. And he's still not close in 2018 to what you want in a starter. A whole lot of things would have to go right for him to make it, they are making a cold rational decision.
  4. None of this has anything to do with the other. And citing rookies is arbitrary. They'll have at least 6 everyday guys with less than 2 full years, likely 1 starter with less than a year (possibly even a rookie!), and a couple young relievers too (maybe even another rookie!). Very young team.
  5. At this point it would be very difficult for him to handle a full season in 2018, probably not even 2019.
  6. The more I think about it the more the move probably makes sense to me. With his shortened season, it is realistically going to take until 2019, and probably 2020, before he can be built up to handle an entire season's workload as a starter. And that's assuming that everything going forward goes on without a significant hiccup (which is unlikely over 2 years). Contra some others, I don't mind the strategy of drafting college relievers and trying to turn them into starters if they have multiple pitches and the right frame (such as Duffey). But that has to be done for people taken after the 3rd round at the earliest. The #6 pick is just way too high risk and way too much lost value to be messing around with this with. Do think if he stays healthy good chance we'll see him later this year. Not a wasted pick, but a huge blunder overall.
  7. Slegers wasn't a first round pick and Wimmers got hurt. Perkins is an acceptable outcome where he was picked. You should definitely want more out of a #6 pick, even if Jay becomes a dominant reliever. And there was clear alternatives at the time.
  8. Yes, that certainly makes the Jay pick a disaster, especially considering who went in the picks right after him.
  9. Pitchers get hurt. And statistically the best predictor of injury is previous injury. It sicks May and the Twins, but he does seem to have a good attitude about it and ready to attack his rehab.
  10. If anything, him throwing fewer pitches the last two years should have helped preserve his elbow. He's been hurt a variety of years in a variety of ways. I don't buy for a second that his development path, even if ill advised for production and roster reasons, had anything extra to do with his injury.
  11. I was going to blame Ryan as a joke, but I respect the effort to do it for real.
  12. The abuse question is greatly overstated, especially in recent years. Might be 2-3 guys a year max, but vast majority of programs handle their pitchers responsibly. 110 pitches followed by a full weeks rest strikes me as perfectly reasonable.
  13. He said 1000. Vargas has 600. But I would say he's performed as would probably be expected based on his minors performance.
  14. The Twins probably don't *need* more data on Vargas, they seem to realize what they have. Seems likely they aren't going to get anyone clearly better to fill the role.
  15. This would work if he hits enough. He's especially light from the left side.
  16. Benches are way too small to carry a dh only who primarily plays against lh starters. Those guys are always on the scrap heap. He has to show something more.
  17. Buxton is over 3 years younger, is an elite up the middle defender and has #1 pedigree. So no, I don't talk about Buxton the same way. I'm not opposed to giving Vargas a couple months of ABs, but I'm not that optimistic.
  18. A 103 OPS+ for a DH that brings nothing else to the table is pretty bad. He might improve from consistent at bats, but I'm pretty skeptical. K rate is huge. He did have one brief stretch where he walked into some bombs, but seemed exposed with more at bats.
  19. Have to admit, it had slipped my mind that Light was on the 40 man before this move. Interesting that the FO is cutting one dimensional power and adding run prevention.
  20. Just a general observation. People are saying this was a great football game. I don't especially agree, straight collapses aren't "great" in my mind. I don't mind large comebacks, but to be a great game there has to be a counterpunch.
  21. As I said, probably Plan A. But if he's terrible in the spring they shouldn't force him on the roster.
